Chereads / The lost Heir / Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Chapter 5 - Chapter 5

Kingston's hospital was busy with emergencies because it was the closest to the Newark city college.

Patients kept trooping in and out of it, cases wer being handled even into the night.

Just in that same vein, the bloodied body of Kevin Smith was wheeled in and the entire emergency room was thrown into a frenzy.

"He is bleeding profusely!" One patient yelled out. "I hope he makes it alive."

"Cause of injury?" the doctor on duty asked the Paramedic as she took over wheeling him to the emergency room.

"Ghastly car accident, was knocked down and run over by a car."

"Blood type?" She asked again, approaching the emergency room which was already prepared for her by the nurses on duty who were hasty enough, seeing the state of the Patient.

"His blood type is kind rare. The test we run in the van shows he is Rhnull. We don't see such blood types everyday."

The doctor paused for a second. "As in, he is Rh-?" She seemed to have shock etched on her face.

"Yes doc. Rh negative."

"Hmmm," muttered and pushed him into he emergency ward, looking at him over and over for possible recognition.

What she heard about his blood sample seemed to get her back to memory lane and it had deeper meaning for her.

The only thing that could prove that was to make that call that she had hoped she never gets to make.

Kevin remained in coma for a few days because of the severity of his accident.

When he finally woke up, he felt a very loud bang in his head.

"Urgh…" he groaned out in pain, looking around the room where he was to try to recognize his location.

He saw a lady and a male hovering over him.

The lady was Doctor Taylor, the one who handled his case while the male was Jack smith; a Lawyer.

"How do you feel now?" Doctor Taylor asked, stretching out his arms to allow quicker blood flow through his veins. He had lost so much blood.

"Where am I?" Kevin asked, his voice heavily rusty. "I cannot see to remember anything."

"Yes. That is perfectly Normal," Doctor Taylor explained with a harmless smile.

"You were in a ghastly accident four days ago and the impact was high. Hence, we do not expect that you would hastily start remembering things."

"So, this is me in a hospital?" He asked, his gaze shifting from Taylor to Jack smith. Taylor nodded.

"Who is he then? He does but have uniforms on like you."

Jack stepped forward.

"I would just like to know a few things about you."

"Things like what?" Kevin asked, feeling slightly panicky. "And why?"

"Well, it is helping us determine who you really are. What is your name?"

"I am Kevin, atleast I remember that."

"Kevin who?"

"I feeling uncomfortable answering that. Why are you interested in these details about me?"

Jack Smith glanced at Doctor Taylor as though asking for her permission and she nodded.

"Look, we need to ask you these questions because, there's someone who has been missing for quite sometime and it is pertinent that we find him. Funny enough, your blood group matches his."

"Oh… and his name is Kevin?" Kevin was dazed and talking gibberish.

"I am not sure what his name is but the answers to give to us could help us determine if that person is you."

"Fine! I am listening."

"Who are your parents?" Jack asked and Kevin shut his eyes.

The memories he had from his childhood were painful and marked by loneliness.

"I don't have parents," he replied drudgingly, opening his eyes again. "I grew up living in several orphanage homes. Funny enough, nobody ever wanted to adopt me."

"Hmm, that is sad but that also stands as a possible proof."

"Proof that what?" Kevin asked, looking intently at Jack smith with curiosity pounding in his heart.

"Proof that you may be related to the wealthiest industrialist history even knew."

Kevin began to lift himself off the bed, stunned by the words that had just slipped out of Jack Smith's lips.

"You mean Charles Montgomery?" Kevin groaned out.

"Exactly! You know him?" Jack was astonished.

"He is my role model. Just like him, I love chemistry so much and just graduated as an industrial chemist. I was hoping to even get employed in his company."

"Woow…blood is definitely thicker than water," Doctor Taylor whispered, letting out a heavy sigh.

"Hmm, this is seriously an uncanny coincidence. How is it possible that the Rh- blood group would occur less than a year after we saw the last? And studies shows they do not just occur randomly. Right doc?"

"Absolutely!  That was exactly why I called you, Jack. You know Charles does right here in this hospital and I handled his case. He divulged his secret about a son who he had hoped to find." Doctor Taylor was whispering so that her words could only be audible to Jack smith.

Kevin was becoming increasingly confused and impatient with the conversations they were having over his head and with their whispers.

"You guys are leaving me all the more confused. In what way am I related to this man and why was I not in his life?"

"Well, Mr Kevin Smith, it appears that there is a 70% chance that you may be the son Charles thought he lost."

Those words travelled through miles and when they finally got to Kevin, he gasped, "what are you saying?"

"We are saying that you are probably Charles Montgomery's son and the only heir to his business."

"How is that even possible?" Kevin asked, looking from Doctor Taylor to Jack smith. His confusion had tripled.

"Look, the best thing would be that we let you recover first. And after you get better, we can further investigate into this."

"But I need answers!" He groaned. "You have just left my heart yearning for more."

"I understand this, however, this will take longer than we both expect. The best thing would be to let you recover fully and I will personally reach out to you."

Kevin saw that no matter how much he tried to convince the man, he was nit going to tell him anything, he simply nodded but his heart was filled with shock at the recent discover.

Different emotions were running through him.

"So, do you have anyone who could look after you here?" Doctor Taylor asked him.

The only person he could think about was the same person he had hurt a few weeks ago by ignoring her for the woman he thought loved him, Eden.

Just then, realisation dawned on him.

"I think I now remembered what happened to me," he exclaimed, feeling heavily sorrowful.
