The next morning, Adrian sat in his office, his head pounding from lack of sleep. His phone rang, and he answered without checking the caller ID.
"Adrian, it's Dr Sarah," his colleague said, her voice urgent.
"What is it, Sarah?" he asked, his tone weary.
"I wasn't sure if I should tell you this, but… I just came across Emily's medical records."
Adrian's heart skipped a beat. "What about them?"
"She had a major procedure done a few months ago...she had her womb removed."
The words hit Adrian like a freight train. "What?"
"I thought you'd know," Sarah said cautiously. "I mean, she's your wife. But I noticed the file flagged for confidentiality, so I thought it might be important to tell you."
Adrian felt his world tilt on its axis. Emily had always known how much he wanted children, how important it was to him. And she had kept something this monumental from him?
