"Who the hell are you and how did you get in here?" The hostility in the woman's voice was clearly visible as she neared me. I could sense she was angry with hell knows who because it was not supposed to be me. As for the reason why, I had to stop them, it was just a natural instinct. Who would want to watch a live porn scene on their first day of work? I tried convincing myself but deep down, I knew something was amiss. It was not just about that weak reason, but something deeper I was yet to know nor admit.
"Don't let me repeat myself." The blonde-haired woman added steps away from my desk that I was forced to accept as mine actually.
I stood up and gave her my most charming smile before answering, "Am the new assistant." Assistant my foot. How much I wished to strangle my so-called boss.
"I haven't heard of any new recruits and why are you... in this office?" The woman's voice was as cold as ice as she slammed her hands on the table. I could feel the air around me turn murderous. If I had not gotten used to this kind of auras, I would definitely be shaking out of fear.
"I was recruited this morning as the president's Personal Assistant. Isn't, Mr Nightveil?" I shifted my head sideway and glanced at Alaric who was leaning on his seat watching us with a smile that did not reach his eyes.
The woman turned her head and Alaric nodded in agreement, then faced me again. "You haven't answered my second question. Why is this desk... in Alaric's office?"
"That, you should ask him." I pointed at Alaric whose lip rose wider staring directly at me. I winked at him before shifting my attention to the woman. "He employed me against my will and placed me in his office. If I didn't know better..." I paused placing my hand beside my mouth, then whispered to the woman, "...I would think he's obsessed with me."
For a moment, I could swear I saw the woman's eye flash red. "How dare you!" She added an animalistic growl.
"Nyssa! That's enough." Finally, he opened his mouth but was still seated on his chair.
The woman, Nyssa or whatever her name was, slammed her hand on my table before she swayed her way to Alaric, and sat on his table just beside him. My heart stopped as I watched them sitting so closely to each other. One thing I was sure of now, I did not like it even one bit.
"I didn't know you are into human girls now," her voice was not that loud but surprisingly I could hear her clearly. Maybe it was because I was keen on doing so which heightened my hearing ability.
My eyes were on Alaric who had been gazing at me the whole time. There was no change in his expression but only the usual, void of any emotions. There were only a couple of times I had seen him smile but it was filled with everything else except genuineness.
"I don't report to you," his answer was simple but enough to shut the woman up, making me feel somehow pleased. "Why are you here?"
"You didn't come yesterday so, I thought of checking..."
"Leave!" I almost felt like laughing but with the man's coldness and dismissive attitude but held back. If I said I felt bad for the woman, I would be lying.
"Is she your new plaything now?" The woman glanced at me as if she were staring at her mortal enemy. And plaything? Me? Of that ice cube guy? He wish! From which angle did I look like a plaything? I was being kept hostage by him for fucks sakes which I was not enjoying at all.
"Leave! Now!" I could feel the weight and warning in Alaric's voice as he briefly, for the first time, looked at the woman now standing beside him.
Nyssa backed off immediately fear now visible on her face. I was also shaken but did not know why. The aura of Alaric was too strong that just his voice was enough to make one bow their head with just a single word. Whatever power he possessed, it was quite dangerous as he was.
"Am sorry, Your Ma..." She could not complete her statement because of the intense stare she got from Alaric. I could feel it even though he was not looking at me.
Nyssa bowed and turned to take her leave, but before that, she glared at me her eyes full of fury and this time, I was sure that I saw them turn red then brown, their original colour. My mind came to a pause and was startled back by the door slamming. I had never seen anything like that before and I even thought I was hallucinating, but that was the second time it happened. I could not be wrong having been a keen observer due to my line of duty. I tried connecting the dots and then understood that strange things had indeed been happening since I met Alaric. First his miraculous healing from the gunshot, then his inhuman speed, killing people with secret weapons he never carries, then his driver from the previous day who healed after having been shot several times and now this? It was too much to be a coincidence.
There was too much information I was trying to process that my head started hurting. I massaged my forehead briefly glancing at the mysterious man who was also looking at me strangely. I tried remembering what exactly he had used to kill the people I had seen but the pictures were too vague.
"Bloody hell!" I cursed slamming my head on the desk due to the pain.
"All okay?" That familiar voice murmured over my head. Heat spread all over my body as my heart rate quickened. I guess it was because my mind was in chaos and he had just added to the strange things.
"How the hell did you get here so fast?" I raised my hurting head trying as much to not show him my vulnerable state. He was standing in front of me with the desk the only barrier between us, and now, I was sure something was amiss about him and the people around him.
"You like hell that much?" He asked in return confusing me even more.
"What do you mean?"
"Bloody hell. What the hell. It isn't a good place, hellish girl," he replied and chuckled at the end.
"Whatever but you didn't answer my question." I knew he was deviating from the topic but I would not let it happen again.
"What question?" His lips formed a curve, while his upper body leaned forward nearing me. This habit of his of standing too close to me was quite dangerous so I sat upright distancing myself from him.
"You know what am talking about. How do you do all that?" I only hoped he would not dismiss my question again.
"Oh hellish, you'll have to travel to hell for the answers you seek." He stood upright too, ready to leave but I caught his tie in a flash pulling him back.
"Just answer my damn question!" Due to our closeness, I could feel his hot breath on my forehead heating my body with hellfire, but I kept holding on.
A few seconds of silence passed as we stared intensely at each other, with no one willing to surrender. Thinking I would not get answers, I loosened my hold on his tie but then, I felt his strong, large hand hold mine into place. True to my earlier suspicion, his eyes also turned bloody red from black, and then pure golden, shining as if they were emitting fire. Instead of fear or anything, all that caught me was intrigue, interest and curiosity to see more. It was as if I was hypnotized by those eyes. Then, his seductive low voice rang in my ears.
