Chereads / He has Risen: The Legend of Kiyoshi / Chapter 18 - Into the Forest.

Chapter 18 - Into the Forest.

The wind howled through the ravine, a biting chill that cut through their bones, but it was nothing compared to the tension that hung in the air. Kiyoshi stood at the front, sword drawn, his breath coming in measured, shallow gasps. The blade felt familiar in his hand, but not comforting. His fingers trembled, not from fear, but from something deeper—a connection to the battle that awaited them.

Behind him, Rajieru stood with his staff braced against the ground, his knuckles white from the pressure. His eyes flickered with the unnerving glint of foresight, flashes of possible outcomes storming through his mind. Each one worse than the last. Blood. So much blood. He blinked rapidly, trying to focus on the present. They weren't dead yet. Not yet.

Celosia's magic hummed around her, the air damp and heavy as she summoned water from the very earth beneath their feet. The weight of the situation pressed on her chest, her heartbeat a thunderous drum in her ears. She wasn't used to this—this feeling of imminent death. But there was no time for fear. The enemy was closing in.

"They're coming," Rajieru whispered, his voice tight.

Kiyoshi tightened his grip on his sword. "Then we don't give them an inch."

A guttural roar tore through the air as the first of their enemies surged from the shadows. Beastly figures, twisted by some dark magic, half-human, half-monstrous. Their eyes gleamed with malice, their bodies rippling with unnatural strength. And they were fast.

Too fast.

"The First Clash."

The first enemy leaped toward them, claws outstretched, but Kiyoshi was quicker. He raised his sword, steel meeting flesh in a sickening slash. The beast howled as its arm was severed at the elbow, black blood spraying across the ground. Kiyoshi didn't stop, twisting his blade to drive it into the creature's chest. It fell, twitching and gurgling at his feet.

Before he could catch his breath, another lunged at him from the side. Kiyoshi barely had time to raise his arm as the claws raked across his shoulder, tearing through his clothes and skin like paper. Pain shot through him, hot and searing. He staggered, but Rajieru was there, his staff swinging in a wide arc, catching the creature in the ribs with a sickening crunch.

"Focus!" Rajieru barked, his own breath ragged.

Kiyoshi nodded, gritting his teeth through the pain. His free hand twitched as he called upon his magic. A second sword materialized in his grasp, shimmering with unstable energy. He slashed upward, catching the next attacker off guard, the blade slicing through its chest in a flash of light. The creature screamed, its body disintegrating into a mess of ash and blood.

Behind them, Celosia was a whirlwind of motion. Her water magic danced around her like a living thing, tendrils of liquid coiling and snapping at the enemies that closed in. She sent a wave crashing into a group of beasts, the force of it slamming them into the jagged rocks. For a moment, it seemed like they might gain the upper hand.

But the tide of enemies was relentless. One of the creatures broke through her defenses, snarling as it lunged for her with razor-sharp claws. Celosia gasped, pulling back just in time to avoid a fatal strike, but the claws grazed her arm, tearing through her flesh. Blood spilled, mixing with the water at her feet.

"Kiyoshi!" she shouted, her voice laced with panic.

He was already moving. His materialized sword flickered and sparked, but it held long enough for him to cleave the creature in two. As the weight of the battle was beginning to press down on him, the constant summons of his magic draining his strength faster than he could afford. But there was no time to rest.

"Turning Point – The Fight Gets Gruesome."

The battle devolved into chaos. Kiyoshi's vision blurred as the pain in his shoulder spread, his breathing becoming more labored with each swing of his sword. His materialized weapons shattered mid-swing, leaving him momentarily defenseless. One of the beasts took advantage, its claws slashing across his side. He felt the sharp sting of flesh tearing, followed by the warmth of blood pouring down his torso.

He screamed, stumbling back, but Rajieru was there, his staff whirling in a desperate arc to fend off the attackers. The precognition that had once guided him was now a blur, the future outcomes too fast, too fractured. He couldn't see clearly anymore. One of the creatures managed to graze his leg, the pain radiating up his body as he dropped to one knee.

"Shit—" Rajieru cursed, using his staff to prop himself up. Blood dripped from the wound, his vision swimming.

"Kiyoshi, we're getting overwhelmed!" Celosia's voice cut through the chaos, her usually calm tone tinged with fear. She lashed out with her water magic, sending a jet of liquid slicing through the air like a whip. It cut through one enemy, but she could feel her control slipping, her magic faltering.

Kiyoshi forced himself to his feet, ignoring the screaming pain in his side. His breath came in short gasps, each one sending a jolt of agony through his chest, but he couldn't stop. Not now. He raised his sword, feeling the weight of it in his hand, heavier than it had ever been.

"Rajieru! Celosia! We end this—now!" he shouted, his voice hoarse but resolute.

"Struggling to Survive."

Rajieru limped forward, his precognition flickering in and out like a faulty lightbulb. He saw brief flashes of futures, many of them ending with their corpses on the ground. But there was one—one sliver of hope. He gritted his teeth, focusing through the pain.

"Celosia, left side!" Rajieru called, his staff spinning as he deflected another attack. Celosia reacted instantly, sending a blast of water to the left, crashing into an enemy that had been ready to pounce on Kiyoshi from behind.

Kiyoshi barely had time to thank her before another enemy lunged at him. He swung his sword upward, the blade cutting through the creature's throat. Blood sprayed across his face, warm and sticky, but he didn't flinch. He drove the blade deeper, pulling it out with a sickening squelch as the body crumpled to the ground.

Celosia's arms shook as she struggled to maintain control over her magic. Blood dripped from the wound on her arm, mingling with the water at her feet. She sent another wave crashing into the enemies, but she was tiring fast. Her breath came in ragged gasps, her vision blurring.

Rajieru was at her side, his staff braced against the ground as he leaned on it heavily. His leg throbbed with pain, but he forced himself to stay upright. He couldn't let his friends down. Not now. Not when they were so close.

"Final Push – Victory or Defeat?"

Kiyoshi stumbled forward, his vision narrowing to a tunnel. The pain in his side was excruciating, but he ignored it, focusing on the one enemy that stood between them and survival. His materialization magic sparked to life again, creating a makeshift shield on his arm. He raised it just in time to block a savage strike from the creature's claws.

"Rajieru, now!" Kiyoshi shouted.

Rajieru, using the last of his strength, lunged forward, his staff cracking down on the creature's head with a resounding thud. It staggered, but it wasn't down yet. Celosia summoned one final burst of magic, the water swirling around her like a tempest. With a shout, she sent a torrent crashing into the creature, slamming it into the ground.

Kiyoshi didn't hesitate. He drove his sword down into its chest, twisting the blade as the light finally faded from the creature's eyes. The battlefield fell silent.

For a moment, none of them moved. They stood there, covered in blood—some of it their own, some of it not—panting, trembling, but alive.

Barely.

Rajieru collapsed to one knee, his staff slipping from his hand as he let out a shaky breath. Celosia sank to the ground beside him, her hands trembling as the last of her magic faded. Kiyoshi wiped the blood from his face, his body screaming in protest as he finally lowered his sword.

They had won. But the cost of victory hung heavy in the air. Though the battle had ended, but the scars—both physical and emotional—would remain for a long time to come.
