Chapter 6 - Secrets in the shadow

It was another foggy morning, and Weston Manor was always dull in an atmosphere of serenity. In the morning, Charlie began to walk on his BMW, barking by all kinds of dogs. Karl Goodman couldn't sleep at all and got up early for a walk in the estate. Just out to meet Alissa, she wants to visit an old friend in town, to experience the latest perm style. Karl thought: All women love beauty.

He smiles as Alisa leaves the estate, and after saying hello to some of his servants, he plans to conduct a deeper investigation inside the estate, especially focusing on the details hidden in the family's history.

His goal is to find out secrets that may exist between members of the family that may reveal the true truth of the case. Because Alisa remembered the family portrait he had said before, and immediately decided to check it first.

The walls of the study were covered with old family portraits, over which Karl 's eyes wandered. He noticed that one member of the family's face looked particularly different from the others. The member, dressed in ancient clothes and with a mysterious smile, had a hooked nose more clearly different from the rest of the family, and was somewhat similar to Arthur from a distance. Karl is very strange, and the family member seems to have a sense of mystery. After all, the British are often considered to have a straight, noble nose. In fact, in the English language, the word "nose" has evolved from the Latin word "nasus", meaning "pointed nose". Ancient Nordic Vikings usually had higher noses, while southern Europeans tended to have flatter noses. With the invasion of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons, their high-nose genes were also brought into England, forming the distinctive nose features of the British today.

He decided to start with the background of the family member to look for more clues.

After some inspection, Karl found that the member of the family was named Henry Weston. Henry Weston played an important but mysterious role in family history. Henry Weston was recorded as being briefly the administrator of the family in his early years, but his conduct was controversial. He has been criticized for involving some improper business transactions, but the details have never been made public.

Karl learned from his housekeeper that the history of the Weston family was compiled in the Weston family, the ancient manor library, and he decided to check it immediately. The library displays rows of ancient books and archives, and the air is filled with an old smell of books. Karl found a book on the shelf called The Secret History of the Weston Family, opened it, and found a detailed record of Henry Weston.

The book notes that Henry Weston has a tough appearance and an impulsive personality, and was a keen collection of eccentric objects, including ancient potions and chemicals. The items are stored in a secret basement, and their existence is known only to the core members of the family. It is also mentioned that Henry Weston was proficient in navigation and loved adventure, and the final record states that he was killed in a storm during an ocean voyage.

Soon Karl discovered an architectural blueprint of the manor, and the original blueprint did make a name —— William Castle. In the annotation, Karl learned that the manor had been changed three times in the past hundred years, and finally reached Weston, and changed his name to Weston Manor.

In the Middle Ages, all kinds of nobles built their own castles on the fief, but in the later period, the change of owners was very common. Karl didn't pay much attention. He was interested in finding on the blueprint that there was also a basement in the library, with the entrance hidden behind the bookshelf.

Driven by curiosity, Karl followed the picture and took out the professional tools he Karl ied and carefully opened the door. The basement smelled of mildew, debris and old furniture, and a whole glass of aged wine. Karl found another small hidden door in the corner of the basement, pushed open the small door, and found a semi-enclosed room.

The wooden frame against the wall of the room was covered with ancient medicine bottles and chemicals. Karl carefully examined the bottles and reagents and found that the bottles and chemical reagents had been opened for used, including several bottles with labels saying "poison."He speculated that the poisons might have been linked to the cause of death of Old Weston. It is imperative that further analysis of these agents occur.

Without delay, Karl quickly found him from the basement of the drug sample, entrusted the housekeeper to the local chemical expert, urging him to request the results as soon as possible. These are often used in early alchemy, but some agents do contain a toxin that can lead to respiratory failure and acute poisoning. Karl realized that, perhaps like a snake venom, he should have found the real direction.

Karl , particularly excited at dinner, lost no time in revealing the current progress of the investigation, cleverly hiding his discovery of the library basement, only to mention that he had accidentally found a basement. Karl presented samples of the medicine recovered from the basement and a report by a chemical expert, explicitly stating that the cause of Old Weston's death was poison poisoning. The poison must be familiar with the whole estate and find the underground storage room. Can come up with the way to poison the murder, we can see how crazy the murderer.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Karl 's voice is serious and calm, " we have now confirmed that the cause of old Weston was poison poisoning. I have confirmed that the agent found in the basement did contain this toxin. That means someone might deliberately put the poison into old Weston, in water, glass, or coffee."

The faces of the family members grew more and more pale, and the atmosphere became particularly tense. With Arthur's fingers clasped together, Alice looked very anxious, resentful and expectant; and Charlie looked uneasy. Lady Madeleine clasped her hands tightly and tears burst in her eyes.

Karl looked at the expressions, his usual trick, and after carefully capturing everyone's expressions, he continued: " Now we need to find the source of the poison and the motivation of the perpetrators. Everyone needs to provide detailed information about their recent behavior so that we can, only, eliminate suspicion."

Karl did not use the killer, he is shaking the tiger, hoping to have a certain deterrent effect. At the same time, he knew that if he said this out, he might face the same result as old Weston and be poisoned. But Karl has made the decision, must promote the case as soon as possible, he has to further investigate the relationship between the family members.

This inquiry was extended, and dozens of people, large and small, throughout the manor, were within the inquiry. He asked all the servants and staff of the manor in detail to know the nature of each job, their knowledge and responsibilities, and their observations and impressions of family members. Through these inquiries, Karl learns that the relationship between family members is not as simple as it seems. Everyone has his own hidden secrets and motivation. Some of the family members were unhappy with the inheritance distribution of Old Weston, especially Arthur, Alice, and Charlie. Arthur's anxiety about his family's responsibilities, Alice's concern about the family's future, and Charlie's disregard for the family all made Karl feel suspicious.

In his inquiries with the cook, Karl especially noticed that Arthur had been looking not far away, as if to be watching the progress here. Karl ignored it, he insisted on following his own way, asking one by one, recording what he thought was important, when a detail, jumped out —— a few days before the death of the old Weston, a large family gathering inside the manor. At the party, the interaction between the family members was particularly intense, even some heated arguments, Charlie even broke a broken glass with the chef's finger. At this time, Karl looked at the cook niang's finger scars, expressed admiration and love, decided to investigate the specific situation of the party, looking for possible clues.

Mrs.Madeline was also very concerned about the inquiry. When Karl said that she would go to read the information of the party, she volunteered to find the album and invited Karl to read the records and photos of the party together.

He found that during the party, several people looked particularly unusual. Among them, Alice had a fierce quarrel with the old Weston at the party, and Charlie talked with several foreign guests, showing very intimate.

Oh, the details are all details, often the answers are hidden in these details. With a few more messages in Karl 's head, all of information is now mixed together, waiting for Karl to arrange and assemble, to find out the key information of the case, Karl believes that the photos have given some answers. If he continues to investigate everyone's background and behavior and find out their relationship with the old Weston, he will find out the secrets they might hide.

Everyone has a secret, everyone has no secret.
