Chapter 16: Echoes of Power
The sun was climbing steadily into the sky, casting a warm glow over Eldoria as Azaymos, Nox, Rex, and The young girl walked through the bustling marketplace. The city was alive, its streets filled with the hum of life as vendors hawked their goods, and performers entertained crowds with displays of elemental magic. Eldoria's buildings rose around them, towering structures of stone and wood, each adorned with intricate carvings representing the elements—fire, wind, earth, and water.
"You can feel the magic in the air," Nox remarked as her eyes darted to a young girl who playfully twirled with her fire spirit, its flames dancing around her but never burning.
Rex snorted. "Imagine if I had a spirit like that. Could've saved us a lot of trouble back in that maze."
Azaymos chuckled. "Yeah, I bet you'd end up setting yourself on fire."
As they wandered further, they arrived at a large gathering near the center of the marketplace. An elder was speaking to the crowd, his voice carrying over the chatter. "Every soul here is tied to an element. The spirits choose us, not the other way around. They reflect who we are, our nature."
The group exchanged glances. The idea of gaining new powers through spirits intrigued them all. The young girl , who had been quiet throughout most of their journey, finally spoke up. "I think we should try."
They made their way through the crowd to the elder. "We're interested," the young girl said, her voice steady. It was the first time she'd introduced herself in front of the group. "I'm Mara. These are my companions, and we want to see what spirits choose us."
The elder studied them for a moment, then gestured toward the summoning circle in the center of the square. "Step into the circle one by one. The spirit that reflects your soul will appear."
Nox was the first to step into the glowing circle. She stood there, calm, eyes closed, focusing on the darkness she often embraced. Slowly, the air around her shimmered. From the shadows, a dark figure emerged—a crow, its feathers like black smoke, its eyes gleaming with silent wisdom. It landed softly on her shoulder, blending into the shadows around her.
"I'll call you Whisper," Nox said with a smirk, feeling the crow's presence settle into her own. "Looks like I've finally got a spirit who knows how to keep quiet."
Rex grinned. "Perfect match. The both of you can lurk in the shadows all day."
Next, Rex stepped into the circle. He grinned confidently, already imagining the kind of spirit he might get. The ground beneath him trembled slightly, and with a sudden crack of energy, a vibrant, crackling creature formed before him. Lightning shot out in short bursts around it, sparking across Rex's skin harmlessly.
"Blitz," Rex named it, his grin widening as the electric creature zipped around him. "I'll be the fastest thing on two legs now."
Azaymos raised an eyebrow. "I just hope you don't blow something up by accident."
Rex laughed, "Hey, I don't start fires. I just light them."
Azaymos approached the circle next, his thoughts heavy with the curse that kept him ageless and bound to his past. As he stood within the glowing sigil, the wind began to swirl violently around him. A storm took shape—a spirit of chaos and tempest. The air grew colder, and the spirit seemed to feed off Azaymos's inner turmoil.
"Gale," Azaymos said softly, naming the spirit. He could feel its wild energy coursing through him. But with that power came a cost. Every time he drew upon it, he felt a faint tug—like the wind was aging him, pulling at his immortal youth.
Nox looked at him curiously. "That spirit… it's strong, but are you sure you can handle it?"
Azaymos glanced at her and then at Gale, who hovered near him, an uncontrollable force of nature. "I have no choice. I need this power. The price... I'll manage."
Mara was the last to step into the circle. The group watched her quietly, unsure of what to expect. She stood there, silent, her expression thoughtful. The air around her seemed to still, and then, with a soft shimmer, a figure emerged. Unlike the other spirits, this one seemed timeless—ancient, yet present. It radiated wisdom and calm.
"Chronos," Mara whispered, recognizing the spirit of time that had come to her. Its power wasn't for battle, but for something deeper—something beyond the moment. She could feel it offering her knowledge, glimpses of what was to come.
Rex, ever the joker, leaned over and whispered to Nox, "So what's her spirit going to do? Make time fly?"
Nox rolled her eyes but smiled. "Maybe she'll help you get over how slow your brain works."
As each of them bonded with their spirits, the elder stepped forward, nodding in approval. "These spirits are your companions now. They will guide you, protect you, and amplify your strengths. But remember, the bond you share is not just one of power; it is one of trust and respect."
The group left the square, their spirits floating or flying around them, drawing curious glances from the people of Eldoria. As they wandered through the city, they saw how deeply ingrained the spirits were in daily life. A blacksmith's fire spirit stoked the flames of his forge, while an earth spirit helped a gardener tend to her flowers. The entire city seemed to move in harmony with the spirits.
"I didn't think this place would be so... alive," Mara said softly, her eyes watching a group of children playing with water spirits near a fountain.
"Yeah," Rex agreed, leaning against a nearby wall. "I could get used to this. Who knows what else we can do with these spirits?"
Azaymos nodded, though his thoughts were distant. His bond with Gale was powerful, but he could feel the cost of using that power. His curse had protected him from aging for so long, but now, every time he drew upon Gale's strength, he felt that protective barrier weakening.
"I don't know what comes next," Azaymos said quietly, watching Gale stir the air around him. "But these spirits—this power—might be exactly what we need."
"To survive whatever comes next," Nox added, her gaze drifting toward Whisper, the shadowy crow that seemed to vanish into the night air.
As the sun set over Eldoria, the group found themselves in a tavern, sharing a meal and discussing their newfound abilities. They laughed, traded stories, and for the first time in a long while, felt a sense of hope for the future.
