Chapter 6 - The Purifiers

Kade jumped to his feet and felt a bullet tear through his skull. He was dead.

'Okay, so, stay down.'

Kade was asleep. a few seconds later, he woke up, surprised.

'So if I go back to a time where I was asleep I stay asleep? Weird.'

Rolling out of bed, Kade looked around, seeing the corpse of someone he didn't know to his left. He laid down, hoping to find refuge from the lead zipping past his head.

'What is happening? I need to stop dying so often.'

Looking around, Kade spotted the dead body of one of the two guys who had been fighting in the dinner hall earlier, he also spotted what looked to be a small machete in his cold hand. Feeling guilty, Kade crawled forward and pulled it out of the man's grasp, adjusting to its weight in his hand.

Waiting a few seconds, Kade peeked over his cot. There were three men, wearing masks that seemed to shine white. They held guns in their hands and were taking turns firing at anything that moved, soon enough, nothing would be moving.

Laying down once more, the machete-holding teen crawled under his cot, getting a bit closer to the people shooting. Running would be futile the doors were in a clear view of the three men. Crawling under another bed, Kade heard the three stop firing, likely having trouble finding any more targets. Kade went still. Soon footsteps reached his ears, the three were now walking towards him. Kade steeled himself and prayed that none of them knew he was there. Grasping the machete, he primed himself to lunge.

Soon, the men were upon him. The first passed the cot Kade was hiding behind, and before he could notice him, a blade flashed through the air, embedding itself into the man's neck. Kade dashed, stabbing the second one through the chest, but the third was too far away, raising their rifle, they let loose three shots into Kade, ripping through his stomach twice, and the third shot found a home between his eyes.

Kade found himself on his stomach, crawling out from a cot as bullets stopped firing, but this time, a man yelled when they did, someone Kade didn't recognize jumped at the three, holding nothing but a wooden mallet. He was shot down and the building went quiet.

Again, the three men walked up to Kades' cot, but this time, before the first passed his hiding place, Kade lunged. Slipping the machete through the neck of the first man, Kade used both hands and slid the blade into the second man's chest cavity. Holding the shooter up by his armpits, he felt it shake as the third littered it with bullets. A bullet slipped through the corpse, grazing Kades' leg. Wincing, Kade threw the corpse forward after hearing his opponent's gun run dry. Picking up a dropped rifle, he aimed it at the enemy. The third one was not a man, Kade realized, as he heard her voice from behind the mask.

"You don't-!"

A bullet flew into the mask where the killer's mouth should be, silencing her as her head snapped back. Kade stared as the mask crumbled, revealing an unidentifiable face. What was identifiable, however, was the black hair with white strands that fell to the floor, attached to the scalp of the corpse.

Kade was frozen, staring at the hair in shock.

'What..?'

Kade came back to his senses, turning the rifle on himself and firing.

The mask clattered to the floor, along with the body of Zebra. Funnily enough, Kade could now remember what Pertis had called her. Her name was June. There was a solution nagging in the back of his mind, a way he could go back further than 15 seconds. But Kade couldn't think, and before he grasped the solution, something tackled him from behind. Hearing his spine rattle with a series of pops, Kade crashed to the floor, he tightened his grip on the rifle in his hands. Two more hands wrapped around the rifle, tearing it out of Kades hands despite him. Soon, steel was resting on the back of his scalp, as his face lay on the ground, resting in someone's blood. Then, a click. The rifle jammed, or was it out of ammo? Kade did not ponder this happening and he twisted around and struck a fist against the face of his attacker, causing them to tumble off of him.

It was the first man Kade had tried to kill, and truly, he had no business living, blood poured out of his neck and the cut was widened by Kades strike. Kade glared at his shape kneeling on the floor beside him, and then he moved, landing another blow on the bleeding man's skull. The murderer's spine couldn't handle this blow, with no skin holding that side down, the mans head rolled off of its anchor, hanging off of his throat. The resilient shooter crumpled to the ground, his body emptying itself of blood.

Kade stood up, dazed, the pain in his leg dull and distant. walking to the dying body of the second man, Kade cupped his mask in his fingers, gently tugging it off of the man's face. Putting it on, Kade looked around. It was odd, the mask was solid, and there were no eye holes, no mouth holes, but Kade could see and breathe, even feeling like he could see better in the nightmarish dark that permeated the building. Kade picked up his machete, and walked to the door, opening it. The machete-holding figure stepped out of the building, and it was dark no more.

The world was on fire.
