Chapter 50 - Chapter 51: Aftermath and Ascension

The council chamber, once a symbol of unshakable power and influence, now stood in stunned silence. Baron Ardyn—the man who had once held the kingdom in an iron grip—lay lifeless on the cold floor. His death was not just the end of an era; it was the spark that would ignite a new order. Yet, despite the victory, a heavy weight hung in the air.

William, still gripping the bloodied sword, stared down at his father's body, his emotions a tangled storm of grief, rage, and uncertainty. The council members shifted nervously, their eyes darting between the fallen baron and the young man who had just taken control.

Lumumba stood beside William, his eyes sharp, assessing the situation with a calculating gaze. This is just the beginning, he thought to himself. The real challenge starts now.

"Alright, everyone," Lumumba said, breaking the silence and stepping forward to address the council. His voice was calm, almost casual, but there was an underlying force behind it that none of the nobles missed. "I think we all understand what's just happened. William is now the ruler of this kingdom, and you're all going to back him. I suggest you start figuring out how you'll explain this sudden change to the rest of the nobility."

The nobles, still in shock, nodded quietly. Garth and Valla, the military captains who had pledged their support to William, exchanged uneasy glances but remained silent. They knew the power vacuum left by Ardyn's death would need to be filled, and quickly.

Amara stepped forward, her voice soft but firm as she addressed the council. "William's leadership will bring stability back to this kingdom. You've all seen what the fissures have done. The people are suffering, and it's time for real change."

The council murmured in agreement, but there was hesitation in their eyes. They were nobles, after all, used to politics and power plays. They wouldn't simply accept William's leadership without reservations.

Lumumba, ever perceptive, noticed the doubt in their faces and leaned toward William. "You need to say something. They'll follow you, but only if you show them strength."

William, still reeling from the events, straightened his shoulders and looked at the council. His voice was steady, but the emotional strain was evident. "My father lost his way. He became consumed by power, by his connection to the Sovereign. But I won't make the same mistakes. This kingdom deserves a leader who will protect the people, not use them. I'll restore order, and with your support, we'll make this kingdom strong again."

There was a pause as the words settled over the room. Slowly, one by one, the council members nodded. They could see the sincerity in William's eyes, and they knew they had no better option. Ardyn's death had left a void, and William was the only one capable of filling it.

"We support you, Lord William," one of the older council members said, his voice shaking slightly. "The kingdom is yours."

Lumumba smirked, satisfied with the outcome. Phase one complete.

Outside the council chamber, the city was stirring. Word of Ardyn's death had spread quickly, and the people were gathering in the streets, unsure of what was happening. The tension was palpable as they waited for news, for some sign of what the future held.

Amara stepped out onto the balcony overlooking the city square, her heart heavy as she saw the anxious faces below. She could sense the uncertainty in the air, the fear of the unknown. But there was also a glimmer of hope—hope that maybe, just maybe, this change would bring an end to the chaos.

"They're waiting for a signal," Amara said softly as Lumumba joined her on the balcony. "They need to see William. They need to know that this wasn't just another power grab."

Lumumba glanced at the crowd below and nodded. "They'll get their signal."

He turned to William, who was still standing in the council chamber, his eyes distant as he processed the enormity of what he had just done. "William," Lumumba called, his voice firm. "It's time. They need to see their new leader."

William blinked, snapping out of his thoughts. He nodded slowly and followed Lumumba and Amara to the balcony. As he stepped into view, a hush fell over the crowd below. Every eye was on him, waiting for his first words as their new ruler.

For a moment, William hesitated, the weight of the kingdom pressing down on him. But then he straightened, his voice rising above the noise of the crowd.

"My people," he began, his tone strong despite the turmoil inside him. "Today marks the end of a dark chapter in our kingdom's history. My father, Baron Ardyn, lost sight of what truly matters—protecting the people of this land. He was consumed by greed, by his connection to the Sovereign, and in doing so, he allowed chaos to spread."

The crowd murmured, their attention locked on him.

"But that ends now," William continued, his voice growing stronger. "With your help, we will restore this kingdom to its former glory. The fissures have caused enough suffering. We will fight back against the darkness that threatens us. We will take control of our future, and together, we will build something better."

The people erupted in cheers, their fear replaced with hope as William's words reached them. For the first time in years, they believed that real change was possible.

Lumumba watched the scene with a satisfied smile. Everything was falling into place.

Later that night, as the city celebrated the new leadership, Lumumba, Amara, Jon, and William met in private to discuss their next moves. The coup had been successful, but they all knew the battle was far from over.

"The council is backing William," Jon said, pacing as he spoke. "But they're going to be watching closely. They won't just hand over full control without trying to influence him."

"Let them try," Lumumba said with a smirk. "William's got us on his side now. They'll fall in line soon enough. Besides, the real threat isn't the council—it's the Sovereign. He's not going to sit back and watch as his influence crumbles. He'll come for us."

Amara nodded, her expression serious. "We still don't know the full extent of the Sovereign's power. The fissures are his doing, and now that we've taken down Ardyn, he'll make his next move. We need to be prepared."

William, who had been quiet for most of the meeting, finally spoke. "I'm ready. Whatever the Sovereign throws at us, we'll face it together. My father..." His voice faltered for a moment, but he pressed on. "My father was just a pawn in his game. We need to find out who the Sovereign really is and what his endgame is."

Lumumba leaned back in his chair, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "We'll find him. And when we do, we'll put an end to this for good."

There was a knock on the door, and Garth entered, his expression grim. "We've just received word. There's been movement from the eastern border. The Sovereign's forces are on the move. It's a small force for now, but it's a signal. They're coming."

The room fell into silence as the weight of Garth's words settled over them. The Sovereign wasn't wasting any time. The coup had destabilized his control, and now he was retaliating.

"So, it begins," Jon muttered, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword.

Lumumba stood, his smirk returning. "Good. I was starting to get bored."

William rose as well, his face set with determination. "We'll be ready for them."

Amara glanced at Lumumba, a faint smile tugging at her lips despite the tension. "You know, for once, I'm actually starting to believe that."

Lumumba chuckled, turning toward the door. "Then let's give them a proper welcome. After all, we've got a kingdom to defend."
