Chapter 14: The Bloodied Path
The canyon reverberated with the sound of battle, the air thick with dust, smoke, and the cries of the wounded. Jin stood at the front line, his sword flashing in the dimming light as he hacked through the first wave of monsters. The creatures were unlike anything they had faced before—larger, faster, and more vicious. They charged without hesitation, their snarls and growls echoing off the canyon walls.
"Hold the line!" Jin shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar of the fight. He swung his sword in a wide arc, cleaving through the monster in front of him. Its blood spattered across the stone, and the creature fell, twitching as it hit the ground.
He glanced to his right, where Soojin and her group were holding their position, fighting back with a ferocity born of desperation. The survivors were giving everything they had, their faces drawn with exhaustion but their determination unwavering. Every strike, every step forward was a fight for survival. And yet, despite their strength, the monsters kept coming.
Joon stood beside him, his hammer smashing through a creature's chest, sending it sprawling to the ground. He paused only briefly to catch his breath before charging forward again, never once looking back.
"We need to take out the bigger ones!" Joon shouted between strikes, his voice filled with urgency. "The rest are just distractions!"
Jin nodded, scanning the battlefield for the source of the real threat. The larger monsters, the ones with thick, armored hides and grotesque fangs, were leading the charge. They were faster, stronger, and smarter than the smaller creatures. If they weren't taken down quickly, they would break through the barricades and tear the survivors apart.
"Kyung-Soo!" Jin called, spotting the strategist at the rear. "We need to focus on the larger ones! Get the archers to target them!"
Kyung-Soo was already shouting orders, his voice cutting through the chaos. The archers, stationed on the higher ledges of the canyon, adjusted their aim. Arrows flew in a steady stream toward the biggest monsters, striking their tough hides but not enough to bring them down.
The larger monsters roared, their eyes blazing with rage as they pushed forward, unhindered by the arrows that stuck in their flesh. Jin cursed under his breath, realizing that their defenses wouldn't hold for long if they couldn't take those monsters down.
"Joon!" Jin shouted. "We need to fall back to the barricades!"
Joon hesitated for a moment, delivering a crushing blow to a smaller creature. "You think the barricades will hold them?"
"They're our only chance!" Jin replied, his voice hard. "If we don't stop the larger ones, the barricades won't matter. Let's regroup and try to force them back!"
Joon's face hardened as he nodded, his expression determined. "Let's do it."
Together, they fought their way back to the barricades, slicing through the smaller monsters as they retreated. The air was filled with the sounds of battle—swords clashing, creatures screeching, and the occasional scream from the wounded. The survivors were holding their ground, but it was clear they were growing more fatigued with each passing minute.
Jin's heart pounded in his chest, adrenaline surging through his veins. He could feel the weight of responsibility heavy on his shoulders. He was the one leading them. He was the one who had to ensure they survived.
The barricades, hastily constructed from rocks and debris, were already beginning to show signs of wear. The larger monsters were pushing against them, their brute strength beginning to take its toll. The ground shook as the creatures rammed into the makeshift defenses, and the survivors scrambled to reinforce them.
Soojin appeared at Jin's side, her face smeared with dirt and blood, but her eyes were sharp. "We can't hold out much longer," she said, her voice grim. "We need to find a way to take down those bigger ones."
"I know," Jin muttered, glancing around. His mind was racing, searching for a solution. There had to be something—some weakness he could exploit.
He saw it then. On the largest of the creatures, a massive beast with scaled skin and glowing red eyes, there was a single spot—a chink in its armor, just beneath its neck. The creature's thick hide covered almost every part of its body, but that one exposed area was vulnerable.
"That's our target," Jin said, his voice low but urgent. "We need to get to that weak spot!"
Soojin nodded, her grip tightening around her weapon. "I'll get the archers to focus on it. If we can land enough shots there, maybe we can bring it down."
Jin gave a sharp nod. He turned back to the battlefield, his eyes scanning for the right moment to strike. The larger monsters were closing in, their strength threatening to break through the barricades. But if they could take down that one creature, it might give them the opening they needed to turn the tide.
"Archers!" Soojin called, her voice piercing the chaos. "Target the beast with the weak spot! Aim for its neck!"
The archers, perched on the high ledges, adjusted their aim, and a volley of arrows shot toward the creature's vulnerable spot. Several struck their mark, sinking deep into the exposed flesh. The creature let out an earsplitting roar of pain, stumbling back as it clawed at the air in frustration.
"It's working!" Soojin shouted, her eyes wide with triumph. "Keep hitting it! We just need to finish it!"
Jin didn't wait to see the outcome. He turned to Joon and Kyung-Soo. "Prepare the next strike! We're taking it down—now!"
Joon grunted in agreement, raising his hammer as he readied for the next wave. Kyung-Soo was already barking orders to the other survivors, positioning them to support the attack. Everyone knew what was at stake. The fight wasn't over, but they had a chance now.
Jin felt the ground shake beneath his feet as the larger creature began to stagger, its legs faltering as the arrows continued to pierce its flesh. The beast howled in rage, but it was weakening. This was their moment.
With a final rallying cry, Jin charged forward, his sword gleaming in the fading light. He reached the creature's side, slashing at its exposed neck. The creature roared, thrashing violently, but Jin's blade found its mark. With a final, desperate movement, the beast collapsed to the ground, its massive body crashing with a deafening thud.
The other monsters, seeing their leader fall, hesitated. The tide of the battle shifted. The survivors took advantage of the opening, pressing forward, striking down the remaining creatures with renewed strength.
But the battle was far from over. More monsters were still coming. Jin's heart pounded in his chest, but he knew they had to keep fighting. They had just won a small victory, but it wouldn't be enough to end the war.
"Keep pushing!" Jin shouted, his voice hoarse. "We're not done yet!"
The survivors rallied around him, their fear and exhaustion replaced by a surge of adrenaline. They weren't going to give up. Not now. Not ever.
