Chapter 219 - 219. Into the Abyss

The forest loomed dark and menacing as Edward, Lyssa, and Aran ran for their lives, the shadowbeast hot on their heels. Edward's heart pounded in his chest as the beast's growls echoed through the trees, growing louder with each passing second. He could feel the pull of the Heart of the Abyss in his satchel, its cold power drawing in darkness like a beacon.

They sprinted deeper into the woods, dodging trees and leaping over roots, but the creature was relentless. Aran was gasping for breath, barely able to keep up with Lyssa, whose eyes darted around, searching for any advantage. Edward struggled to focus, his mind clouded with dread and the overwhelming presence of the Heart.

"We can't outrun it forever!" Aran wheezed, clutching his side.

"We don't have a choice!" Lyssa shouted back, her voice strained. "If we stop, we're dead!"

Edward's thoughts raced. The shadowbeast wasn't just chasing them. It wanted the Heart, and as long as he carried it, they were its prey. But abandoning it was not an option. The Heart held too much power—if it fell into the wrong hands, the consequences could be catastrophic.

Suddenly, a cliff appeared ahead, the land dropping off into a deep ravine. The river below roared, far too treacherous to jump into.

"Damn it!" Lyssa cursed under her breath as they skidded to a halt. "We're trapped."

The shadowbeast emerged from the trees behind them, its glowing red eyes fixated on Edward, ignoring Lyssa and Aran. It knew what it wanted.

"Edward," Lyssa said, her voice low, "we need a plan. And fast."

Edward looked around, his mind racing. They were out of options, but they couldn't face the beast in a direct fight. He felt the weight of the Heart pulse against his chest, and an idea began to form.

"I'll distract it," he said, taking a step toward the beast. "You two get out of here."

Lyssa and Aran both turned to him, shocked.

"Are you out of your mind?" Aran shouted. "That thing will tear you apart!"

Edward shook his head. "It's after the Heart, not me. If I can lead it away, you'll have a chance to escape. I'll meet you at the eastern mountains. Trust me."

Lyssa's eyes narrowed, understanding flashing across her face. She knew there was more to Edward's plan than he was letting on, but there was no time to argue. "Don't do anything stupid."

"I'll be fine," Edward replied, though he wasn't sure he believed it.

Without waiting for more protest, Edward turned and bolted to the right, drawing the shadowbeast's attention. It let out a guttural snarl and lunged after him, leaving Lyssa and Aran behind.

Edward ran with all the strength he could muster, weaving through the trees as the beast crashed through the forest behind him. He could feel its hot breath on his neck, but he didn't stop. The Heart was pulling him deeper into the woods, guiding him toward something… something dark.

He burst through the underbrush and found himself in front of an ancient, weathered stone circle, overgrown with vines and moss. The air was colder here, the atmosphere thick with an unnatural energy. This place wasn't on any map—he had no idea how he had found it, or if it had found him.

The shadowbeast stopped at the edge of the circle, pacing back and forth like a predator waiting for the right moment to strike. Edward stood in the center, gripping the satchel, feeling the Heart of the Abyss pulse wildly.

"This is it," he whispered to himself. "Whatever power is tied to this Heart, I need to use it now."

The beast lunged.

Without thinking, Edward opened the satchel and grasped the Heart with both hands. The cold, dark energy surged through him, seeping into every corner of his mind and body. The ground beneath him trembled as the ancient circle responded to the Heart's power, the stones glowing faintly with long-forgotten magic.

Edward's vision blurred, the world around him twisting and warping. The shadowbeast reared back, its eyes widening in fear for the first time. It let out a howl, but it was too late. The ground beneath them cracked open, and tendrils of shadow erupted from the earth, wrapping around the beast and pulling it into the darkness below.

Edward collapsed to his knees, barely able to keep his grip on the Heart. The abyss yawned before him, an endless void filled with whispers and shadowy figures. He could feel it calling to him, tempting him with promises of power and knowledge.

But there was something else—something deeper, darker, hidden within the abyss. A presence far more dangerous than the shadowbeast. The Heart of the Abyss wasn't just a tool of destruction. It was a key.

A key to a prison.

Edward struggled to pull himself back from the edge, releasing the Heart and letting it fall to the ground. The tendrils of shadow receded, the void closing as quickly as it had appeared. The stone circle returned to its normal state, the eerie glow fading.

Breathing heavily, Edward looked around. The shadowbeast was gone, consumed by the darkness. But the danger was far from over. He had only scratched the surface of the power within the Heart, and now he knew—he wasn't the only one after it.

As the first light of dawn began to break through the trees, Edward stood, his legs shaky but resolute. He had made it through the night, but the real battle was just beginning.

He had to find Lyssa and Aran. There were secrets about the Heart of the Abyss that they needed to uncover—and fast. Because whatever was lurking in that void wouldn't stay trapped forever. And the next time it came for him, it wouldn't be so easy to escape.

With one last glance at the ancient circle, Edward turned and disappeared into the forest, the weight of the Heart heavy on his mind.
