Chereads / Shadow's Gambit / Chapter 203 - 203. Shadow of the Void

Chapter 203 - 203. Shadow of the Void

The shadowy figure stood at the entrance of the forge, an embodiment of the very void they had just severed from the Heart of Aether. Its presence was overwhelming, the temperature in the room dropping instantly. A deep chill crept into their bones as they stared at the figure, its form flickering like a dark flame, as though it was made of shadows themselves.

Aran, Lyssa, and Edward froze, their senses screaming at them to flee, but there was nowhere to go. The creature's aura was suffocating, pressing down on them like the weight of an entire realm. Aran instinctively reached for his dagger, knowing it would be of little use against whatever this being was.

"This... is the force that's been chasing us," Edward muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. "It's... ancient."

Lyssa took a step back, her eyes never leaving the figure. "More than that. It's not just a being. It's a part of the void itself."

The creature took another step forward, its form becoming clearer. Where once there was only darkness, now faint outlines of armor and ethereal tendrils could be seen, swirling around its body like smoke. Its face remained obscured, though two pinpricks of red light burned where its eyes should have been.

"I have no idea what we're supposed to do against something like that," Aran said, his voice low, betraying the fear creeping into his heart.

"You're not supposed to do anything," came a voice—deep, resonant, and layered with malice. It wasn't the creature that spoke, but the void itself. "You are but insects, scurrying in the presence of a force you cannot comprehend."

The room trembled as the creature's voice echoed throughout the chamber. Edward clenched his fists, a cold sweat running down his back. "If we've severed the connection between the Heart and the void, how can you still be here?"

The creature's eyes blazed brighter. "The Heart was never yours to take. You have merely delayed the inevitable."

Aran stepped forward, his resolve hardening. "We're not going to let you take it back."

The shadow creature tilted its head, as if amused by Aran's defiance. "You think your will can change what is written in the fabric of reality itself? The void is eternal. The Heart belongs to it. You are only delaying the return of what is ours."

Lyssa, standing beside Aran, ignited a defensive barrier, the runes glowing faintly in the dim light of the forge. She could feel the oppressive energy radiating from the creature, as if it was feeding off their fear. "We've come too far to let you have it now," she said defiantly.

The creature didn't respond in words, but its form shifted. Dark tendrils stretched toward them, faster than they could react. Aran, Lyssa, and Edward scattered, barely avoiding the tendrils as they slammed into the ground where they had stood moments before. The impact sent shockwaves through the chamber, cracks spidering through the stone floor.

Edward pulled himself up, his mind racing. There had to be a way to stop it. The forge, the Heart—they were connected somehow. If they had severed the void's connection to the Heart, maybe the forge still held the key to weakening the creature.

"The forge!" Edward shouted. "It's still active! We can use it!"

Aran looked toward the glowing runes, still pulsing with residual energy. "How? We barely understand how it works!"

Edward's eyes flickered with determination. "We don't need to understand it! We just need to use it!"

The shadow creature lunged again, faster this time. Lyssa cast a powerful ward, but the impact shattered it like glass, sending her flying backward into the stone wall. She groaned in pain, struggling to get back on her feet.

"Lyssa!" Aran shouted, running to her side. But before he could reach her, the creature loomed over them both, its tendrils wrapping around Aran's body, lifting him into the air. The pressure was immense, his bones creaking under the strain.

"Aran!" Lyssa cried, reaching out with her magic to break the tendrils, but the void's power was too strong, too ancient. Her spells fizzled out before they could even reach the creature.

Aran gasped, struggling against the crushing force. "Edward...! The forge!"

Edward was already at the anvil, his hands moving frantically over the glowing runes. The ancient magic still pulsed with energy, though it was fading fast. He had no idea what he was doing, but his instincts told him that the forge was their only chance.

"Hold on, Aran!" Edward shouted, his hands glowing with arcane light as he channeled everything he had into the forge. The runes began to flare again, brighter this time. The floating tools around the anvil started to move, spinning faster and faster, drawn to the Heart of Aether.

The creature seemed to sense the change, releasing Aran from its grip and turning its full attention toward Edward. Its tendrils lashed out, but before they could reach him, a barrier of light erupted from the forge, blocking the attack.

Edward's eyes widened as the forge responded to his magic. The runes around the room glowed with renewed vigor, and the Heart of Aether began to pulse in rhythm with the forge. The connection between the two was undeniable.

Lyssa, now back on her feet, summoned the last of her strength and joined Edward at the forge. Together, they channeled their magic into the Heart, feeding it the energy it needed to activate fully.

The shadow creature howled in rage, its form writhing as it tried to break through the barrier. "You cannot stop the void!" it roared, its voice shaking the very walls of the forge.

But it was too late.

With a final surge of power, the forge ignited, sending a shockwave of light and energy through the chamber. The creature screamed as the light engulfed it, its form unraveling, disintegrating into nothingness. The void's presence, once so oppressive, vanished in an instant.

Silence fell over the forge.

Edward and Lyssa collapsed to the ground, exhausted but victorious. The Heart of Aether, now fully restored, glowed with a gentle, serene light, free from the void's influence.

Aran, bruised but alive, staggered to his feet, staring at the now-empty space where the creature had stood. "Is it... over?"

"For now," Edward said, breathing heavily. "But I have a feeling this isn't the last we'll see of the void."

Lyssa nodded, her eyes still on the Heart. "The void may be eternal, but so are we. And we'll be ready."

As they gathered their strength and prepared to leave the forge, they knew one thing for certain: this was only the beginning of a much larger battle—a battle not just for the Heart of Aether, but for the fate of all worlds.
