Chapter 198 - 198. The Scholar's Revelation

The journey toward the scholar's dwelling had stretched on longer than anticipated. Aran, Lyssa, and Edward trudged through the forest, the air thick with tension as they moved deeper into the heart of Arcanis. The oppressive silence weighed on them, the dark force still lurking in the background of their senses, always just out of sight but never far enough to feel safe.

Edward's breathing was labored, his strength sapped from maintaining the magical seal. Aran kept an eye on him, concerned that the mage wouldn't last much longer without rest, but there was no time to stop. They were too close to answers—too close to the truth of what was hunting them.

"We're almost there," Edward murmured, gesturing to a clearing ahead. "It's just beyond this ridge."

Lyssa and Aran exchanged wary glances but nodded. They followed Edward up the narrow path, moving cautiously through the dense undergrowth until they reached the top. There, nestled in a secluded glade, stood a crumbling stone tower covered in vines. It was ancient, its walls marked with arcane symbols that flickered faintly with residual magic.

"This is it?" Lyssa asked, her tone skeptical.

Edward nodded. "It may not look like much, but if anyone can help us, it's Archon Serevan. He's... eccentric, but brilliant. His knowledge of ancient magic and forbidden forces is unmatched."

Aran eyed the tower warily, his grip tightening on the hilt of his sword. "Let's hope he's willing to share that knowledge."

They approached the entrance cautiously, the heavy wooden door creaking ominously as Edward pushed it open. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of old parchment, ink, and a strange mixture of herbs. Shelves lined the walls, crammed with books, scrolls, and curious trinkets that hummed with faint magic.

A tall, gaunt figure stood in the center of the room, hunched over a large desk cluttered with maps and manuscripts. The man wore tattered robes, his long gray hair falling in unkempt strands around his pale face. His eyes, however, gleamed with a sharp, almost unnatural intelligence as he looked up to greet his guests.

"Edward," the man said, his voice rasping with age but filled with a strange energy. "I wasn't expecting you."

"We had no choice," Edward replied, stepping forward. "We're being hunted by something... something ancient and powerful. We need your help, Serevan."

The scholar's eyes flicked to Lyssa and Aran, narrowing slightly before returning to Edward. "You've brought company. I assume they're not here for a casual visit either?"

Lyssa stepped forward, her tone firm. "We've come because we're being pursued by a force that we don't understand. It's after the Heart of Aether."

Serevan's expression changed at the mention of the artifact. His eyes widened slightly, and a shadow of recognition crossed his face. "The Heart of Aether?" he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "That explains much."

"What do you know about it?" Aran asked, stepping forward. "And what's this creature that's hunting us?"

Serevan's gaze shifted to Aran, studying him for a long moment before he spoke. "The Heart of Aether is a relic from an age long forgotten—a time before even the ancient empires rose and fell. Its power is immense, yes, but it is also a beacon, a lure for forces that exist beyond our understanding."

"What kind of forces?" Edward asked, his brow furrowed.

Serevan hesitated, as if weighing how much to reveal. "There are entities that dwell in the void between realms, beings that were never meant to cross into our world. The Heart of Aether draws their attention. It's not just a source of power—it's a gateway. And the force that is hunting you... it may be one of them."

"A gateway?" Aran asked, his voice low. "You're saying that this thing is trying to enter our world through the Heart?"

Serevan nodded grimly. "Exactly. The Heart acts as a bridge, a conduit for these entities to manifest. It's likely that the creature hunting you has already breached the barrier between worlds, but it needs the Heart to fully materialize in our realm."

Lyssa's expression hardened. "So, if it gets the Heart, it will become unstoppable."

Serevan inclined his head. "Yes. And if that happens, there will be little anyone can do to stop it. The creature you're dealing with isn't just a mindless pursuer—it's a being of unimaginable power, one that predates the magic we know. It's older than the gods."

A cold chill settled over the room as Serevan's words sank in. Aran felt a knot of dread tighten in his chest. They had always known that the Heart was dangerous, but this... this was something far beyond their comprehension.

"Is there any way to stop it?" Edward asked, his voice quiet but urgent.

Serevan paused, his gaze distant as he considered the question. "There is a way," he said finally. "But it's not without risk."

"What is it?" Lyssa pressed, stepping closer.

Serevan's eyes flicked to her, and for a moment, he seemed to hesitate. "You would have to destroy the Heart of Aether."

Aran's heart skipped a beat. "Destroy it?"

"Yes," Serevan replied, his voice steady. "It's the only way to sever the connection between this world and the void. But doing so will release the full force of the energy contained within the Heart. The result would be... catastrophic."

"How catastrophic are we talking?" Lyssa asked, her voice laced with tension.

"The kind of power that could level entire continents," Serevan said, his voice cold. "The Heart's destruction would unleash a force capable of reshaping the very fabric of this world. It would save you from the entity, yes, but it would come at an unimaginable cost."

Silence filled the room as the weight of his words settled over them. Destroying the Heart would stop the creature, but at what price? The thought of unleashing such devastation chilled Aran to his core.

"There has to be another way," Aran said, shaking his head. "We can't sacrifice the world to stop one creature."

"There may be another way," Serevan conceded, his voice softer. "But it would require something even more dangerous. A binding ritual, one that could trap the creature within the Heart itself, sealing it away forever."

"And what would that entail?" Edward asked.

Serevan's gaze darkened. "The ritual would require a great sacrifice. One of you would have to bind your life force to the Heart, becoming its guardian for eternity. You would never leave its side, and you would never know peace. The entity would be contained, but at the cost of your freedom."

Aran exchanged a glance with Lyssa and Edward. The choice before them was clear, but neither option was easy. Destroy the Heart and risk the world's safety, or sacrifice one of their own to seal the creature away.

The decision weighed heavily on them all.

"We'll need time to think," Lyssa said finally, her voice steady but filled with resolve.

Serevan nodded. "Take all the time you need. But remember, the creature won't wait forever."

As they turned to leave the tower, the weight of the choice before them pressed down like a dark shadow. The path ahead was unclear, and no matter what they chose, there would be a cost.
