Chereads / Shadow's Gambit / Chapter 173 - 173. The Sanctuary of Secrets

Chapter 173 - 173. The Sanctuary of Secrets

The world blurred and twisted around them as they passed through Edward's portal. Aran felt the disorienting pull of space and time bending in ways that made his stomach churn, but he held steady. The last thing they could afford now was to show weakness.

When the sensation stopped, they found themselves standing in an unfamiliar place. The air was thick and warm, carrying the scent of incense and aged parchment. They were in a massive underground hall, its walls adorned with intricate carvings of ancient mages and magical symbols. Shelves stacked with books and scrolls lined the perimeter, and flickering candlelight gave the chamber a dim, almost sacred glow.

"This... is where?" Lyssa asked, catching her breath as she took in the strange yet awe-inspiring surroundings.

Edward leaned heavily on his staff, his body shaking from the strain of the portal spell. "The Sanctuary of Secrets. It's an ancient mage haven... one that very few know about."

Seraphina sheathed her blades and raised an eyebrow. "How do you know about it, then?"

Edward gave a weak chuckle. "You don't live as long as I have without learning a few things that are better left forgotten."

Aran stepped forward, his eyes scanning the vast hall, every corner brimming with history. He could feel the latent magical energy in the air. "Is it safe here?"

"As safe as anywhere can be," Edward replied, his voice filled with the kind of certainty that only years of experience could bring. "The Sanctuary was built to be hidden from both prying eyes and... darker forces. Even the Void won't find us here easily."

Lyssa relaxed, though only slightly. "Good. We could use a break."

They all could. The battle with the Void-touched wolves had pushed them to their limits. And now, more than ever, they needed time to think, to regroup, and to figure out what their next move would be.

As they began to settle, Edward moved toward one of the nearby shelves, pulling out an ancient tome that looked older than even the walls surrounding them.

"Research?" Aran asked.

Edward nodded. "If we are to continue sealing the Nexuses, we need more information—much more. The Void is a force older than anything we know. If we're going to stop it, we'll need to understand it."

Aran watched as Edward flipped through the pages of the book, his eyes narrowing in concentration. For all their battles and victories, he knew that brute force alone wouldn't be enough. The Void wasn't just an enemy—they were up against a force that was vast, calculating, and relentless.

Seraphina, always pragmatic, began sharpening her blades on a whetstone she carried. "How long do we have until the Void finds us again?"

Edward glanced up from the tome. "I can't say for sure. The Sanctuary is warded against detection, but nothing is foolproof. We'll need to move again soon."

Aran knelt beside the fire Lyssa had conjured, feeling its warmth against his skin. He was grateful for the reprieve, but his mind was already on what lay ahead. They had won battles, but the war against the Void was only just beginning. And something told him that the worst was yet to come.

Lyssa sat down across from him, her eyes distant. "I don't know how much longer we can keep this up."

Aran looked at her, understanding the exhaustion that weighed on them all. "We have to. There's no other choice."

She met his gaze, her expression softening. "I know. But it's just... overwhelming. The Void, the Nexuses, the constant fighting. It feels like there's no end."

"There is an end," Aran said firmly. "We just have to find it."

Before Lyssa could respond, Edward let out a sharp breath, his eyes widening as they locked onto something in the tome. "This... this can't be."

Aran and Seraphina were on their feet instantly, moving toward Edward's side. "What is it?" Seraphina asked, her tone sharp with urgency.

Edward's finger trembled as he traced a symbol on the page. "The Void isn't just spreading randomly. It's looking for something... or someone."

"What do you mean?" Aran asked, his stomach tightening.

Edward closed the book with a snap and looked at Aran with a seriousness that chilled him to the bone. "The Void's movements are deliberate. It's trying to breach specific points in our world, places of power. And every Nexus we seal... it's redirecting its efforts elsewhere. But according to this... its ultimate goal is not just to consume everything. It's searching for a vessel."

"A vessel?" Lyssa echoed, her voice filled with confusion.

Edward nodded grimly. "A being strong enough to contain the Void's essence, to act as its avatar in this world."

Seraphina clenched her fists. "So, it's looking for someone to possess."

"Exactly," Edward said. "The Void can't fully manifest here without a vessel. If it finds one, sealing the Nexuses won't matter anymore. The Void will have a foothold in our world, and from there, it will spread like wildfire."

Aran's mind raced. A vessel. Someone or something capable of harnessing the Void's power. The thought sent a shiver down his spine. If the Void found such a host, the consequences would be catastrophic.

"Then we need to stop it before that happens," Aran said, his voice steady despite the dread gnawing at him.

Edward closed his eyes, the weight of their situation settling over him like a heavy cloak. "We don't know who—or what—the Void is looking for. But we do know one thing."

"What's that?" Lyssa asked.

"The Void is growing impatient," Edward replied darkly. "It will stop at nothing to find its vessel."

The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken fear. They had been fighting for survival, sealing the Nexuses to prevent the Void from spreading. But now, they were racing against time. The Void wasn't just spreading—it was hunting.

"We'll find it," Aran said after a long pause, his voice filled with determination. "Whatever or whoever the Void is looking for, we'll find it first. And we'll stop it."

Seraphina sheathed her blades with a sharp click. "And if the Void's vessel is already out there?"

"Then we take the fight to them," Aran said, his eyes cold. "Before the Void takes everything."
