Chapter 171 - 171. Echoes of the Abyss

The faint light that had offered them a glimmer of hope grew brighter as Aran and his companions ventured deeper into the cavern. Every step forward was filled with apprehension; the weight of the recent battle still pressed heavily on their shoulders. The deathly silence that replaced the creature's chilling screeches felt oppressive, as if the Void itself was holding its breath, waiting for them to make a mistake.

Edward staggered beside Lyssa, the toll of the magic he had channeled evident in his pale face. "We need to find a place to rest," he murmured, his voice barely audible over the crunch of loose stone beneath their feet.

"We can't stop here," Aran replied, his voice firm but not without sympathy. His eyes were fixed ahead, where the light shimmered against the cavern walls like a mirage. "If that light is what I think it is, we're close to something—maybe an exit. We rest when we're out of this cursed place."

Seraphina had taken point, moving with her usual grace but without the playful banter she often wielded to defuse tension. Her twin blades were still in hand, her knuckles white from gripping them tightly. She didn't trust the quiet. None of them did.

"Do you think we truly defeated it?" Lyssa asked, her voice trembling slightly. The exhaustion in her was not just physical but emotional. "That creature—it felt more than just... alive. It was like it was part of the Void itself."

Edward sighed. "That wasn't just a creature. It was a fragment of something much larger, something that extends far beyond this cavern. The Void is like an abyss, reaching into realms we can't even fathom. What we fought was merely a whisper of its true power."

Aran's brow furrowed. "So you're saying there's more?"

"There's always more," Edward said grimly. "The Void is a force of nature. You don't destroy it—you can only hold it at bay."

That didn't sit well with Aran. The thought that they had only scratched the surface of the Void's influence sent a chill down his spine. But there was no point dwelling on it. He had to focus on what was in front of them.

As they pressed on, the walls of the cavern began to narrow, the once-wide expanse closing in around them. The light was closer now, no longer a distant flicker but a steady glow that illuminated the jagged stone. The air grew warmer, and Aran could feel a faint tremor beneath his feet, as if the very earth was alive and breathing.

Finally, they reached the source of the light. It was a vast chamber, unlike anything they had seen before. The walls were covered in glowing runes, similar to the ones they had encountered earlier but more intricate, more powerful. In the center of the chamber stood a massive stone altar, its surface carved with symbols of ancient power.

Above the altar floated an orb of pure, radiant light. It pulsed with a steady rhythm, like the beating of a heart, and the energy it emitted was both awe-inspiring and terrifying.

"What... is that?" Lyssa whispered, her eyes wide with wonder and fear.

Edward stepped forward, his gaze fixed on the orb. "It's a Nexus of the Void," he said, his voice hushed with reverence. "A focal point where the Void's energy gathers. These are incredibly rare—usually only found in places where the boundary between realms is weak."

Aran frowned. "And what does it do?"

"It's a gateway," Edward explained. "A bridge between our world and the Void. If left unchecked, it could allow the Void to spread into this realm, corrupting everything it touches."

Seraphina narrowed her eyes. "So we destroy it?"

Edward hesitated. "Destroying a Nexus is not easy. It's tied to the fabric of reality itself. If we're not careful, we could cause more harm than good. But... if we can contain it, we might be able to seal off this part of the Void permanently."

Aran stepped forward, his gaze locked on the orb. He could feel the energy radiating from it, a cold, oppressive force that tugged at his mind. The Void had already tried to consume them once—it wouldn't hesitate to do so again.

"We don't have a choice," Aran said, his voice resolute. "If we leave this thing here, it's only a matter of time before something worse comes through."

Edward nodded slowly. "Agreed. But we'll need to be careful. This could get dangerous."

Seraphina sheathed her blades and cracked her knuckles. "When isn't it dangerous?"

Lyssa closed her eyes and took a deep breath, steadying herself. "Tell us what we need to do."

Edward moved toward the altar, his hands tracing the runes that adorned its surface. "The Nexus is tied to these runes. If we can disrupt the flow of energy without destabilizing the chamber, we should be able to sever the connection to the Void."

Aran watched as Edward worked, muttering incantations under his breath. The runes began to flicker, their glow dimming as Edward manipulated the energy within them.

But as the runes flickered, the Nexus pulsed with greater intensity, its light growing brighter and more erratic.

"Edward..." Aran said, his voice tense.

"I know, I know!" Edward snapped, his concentration unbroken. "Just give me a minute."

But the Nexus wasn't waiting. The light flared violently, and the ground beneath them trembled with increasing intensity. Cracks began to form in the stone floor, and a low, rumbling sound echoed through the chamber.

"We don't have a minute!" Seraphina shouted, her hand moving toward her blades once more.

Aran could feel the air growing colder, the oppressive presence of the Void creeping back into the chamber. The Nexus was reacting to their interference, and it wasn't happy.

"Edward, whatever you're doing, do it faster!" Aran barked, his eyes darting toward the Nexus as it began to pulse dangerously.

Edward's hands moved faster, his words a blur of ancient magic. The runes flickered violently, and for a moment, it seemed like the Nexus would explode. But then, with a final, desperate push, Edward slammed his hands onto the altar.

The runes flared brightly before going dark, and the Nexus let out a deafening scream. The light dimmed, flickering wildly before collapsing in on itself, leaving behind a faint, glowing residue in the air.

For a moment, the chamber was silent.

Then the tremors stopped.

Aran exhaled a breath he hadn't realized he was holding. "Did we...?"

Edward collapsed to his knees, utterly spent. "It's... it's sealed. For now."

Lyssa helped Edward to his feet, her expression one of relief mixed with exhaustion. "What now?"

Aran looked around the chamber, taking in the silence, the absence of the Void's oppressive presence. "We get out of here. And we figure out how to stop the Void for good."

As they made their way toward the exit, Aran couldn't shake the feeling that this was only a temporary victory. The Void was relentless, and its reach extended far beyond this Nexus.

But for now, they had won. And that was enough.

For now.
