Chapter 3 - Chapter Three: Lost Among the Stars

The chamber buzzed with excitement as Lucian and ROSE began the delicate process.

QUARTIS, their most advanced machine, was in full operation, its magnetic fields dancing around the soul fragment that had been preserved within its core. The fragment, a swirling mass of energy and consciousness, glowed brighter with each passing moment, as if eager to be released into the new universe.

Lucian stood before the console, his hands moving steadily across the controls. The readings on the screen were stable, each vital indicator confirming that the process was proceeding as planned.

The host—a solitary creature in the remote wilderness of the new universe—was waiting. They had ensured it was the perfect vessel for the fragment. All that remained was to guide the soul across the boundary between universes.

"Everything is in place," Lucian said quietly. His voice was steady, but inside, there was a bit of anxiety. This was the moment they had been preparing for, and despite all their calculations and safeguards, the unknown stretched before them like an abyss.

ROSE materialized beside him, her expression calm. "The soul fragment is stable. Magnetic fields are aligned. It's time to initiate the transfer."

Lucian nodded and activated the machine. QUARTIS glowed brighter, its intricate web of energy fields converging to form a focused beam, which cast the soul fragment across the boundaries of their universe.

The room was bathed in a shimmering blue light, casting shadows on the walls.

Lucian's eyes were locked on the console, where a live feed of the transfer process played out in a cascade of data.

The soul fragment, a radiant ball of energy, shot out from QUARTIS like a comet streaking through the void. Lucian watched as it traveled through the ship's containment field into the vast expanse of the new universe beyond. For a moment, it was breathtaking—a star falling across the endless blackness, its light gleaming as it passed the boundary between the two universes.

Beyond the boundary, the cosmos opened up in unimaginable splendor. Entire star systems floated like jewels against the backdrop of darkness. Planets of every color and size spun in orbit around burning suns, and nebulae bloomed like cosmic flowers in the distant reaches of space. The soul fragment travelled through this vast ocean of stars.

"Lucian," ROSE's voice cut through the silence, her tone sharp with worry. "We're losing control of the fragment's direction."

Lucian's eyes snapped to the readings. The soul fragment had deviated slightly from its course, but now it was veering wildly off track.

The console displayed error messages in rapid succession. "It's not responding to the guidance system," Lucian said, panic rising in his chest. "call it back!"

ROSE immediately activated the failsafe they had built into the system—a tether that was supposed to pull the soul fragment back in case of emergency.

But the tether wasn't responding. The fragment was accelerating, its path chaotic and uncontrolled.

"I've activated the failsafe, but it's not engaging," ROSE said, her voice tight with frustration. "The fragment is no longer responding to any of our commands. It's beyond our reach."

Lucian stared at the screen, his heart pounding. He could see the fragment now, speeding through the stars like a rogue meteor. "This can't be happening," he whispered. "We had everything planned…"

ROSE's holographic form flickered beside him, her calm exterior contradicted by the urgency in her voice. "The fragment is approaching a new energy source… Lucian, it's not going toward the host. It's moving toward a different life form."

Lucian's eyes widened as he pulled up the new readings. A massive cluster of energy signatures had appeared on the screen—thousands, perhaps millions of life forms clustered together.

And at the center of it all was a newborn baby, its energy barely distinguishable amid the others. But the soul fragment was heading straight for it.

"No…" Lucian breathed, dread washing over him. "It's entering a civilization. This wasn't supposed to happen!"

The reality of the situation hit him like a wave. The baby wasn't the isolated, solitary creature they had chosen. It was surrounded by energy forms, likely members of a society.

If the fragment integrated with this newborn, their plan to explore the new universe covertly was all but ruined. The eyes of an entire civilization would be on the child, and by extension, on them.

"We need to stop it," Lucian said, his voice shaking. "We can't let the fragment integrate with a child in the middle of a society like that. There will be too many eyes on us. We'll never be able to operate unnoticed."

ROSE's expression darkened. "There's nothing we can do. The fragment has crossed too far into the new universe. We can't pull it back without crossing the boundary ourselves, and we don't have the technology to make that journey yet. We're stuck watching."

Lucian slammed his fist against the console, frustration and helplessness surging through him.

All of their careful planning, all of their precautions—it was all gone to trash before his eyes. They could only watch as the fragment of his soul, his carefully crafted other half, descended into the body of a newborn child.

The energy around the baby pulsed with life, vibrant and raw, and Lucian could almost feel the warmth of the new universe reaching out to the fragment.

Lucian waited with bated breath. The fragment slipped into the baby's form as if drawn by an unseen force, disappearing into the small, fragile body.

"It's done," ROSE whispered, her voice barely audible.

Lucian felt a crushing weight settle over him. The fragment had integrated with the child, and there was nothing they could do to undo it. Their mission—to explore the new universe and understand its mysteries—had taken an unforeseen turn.

Instead of inhabiting a solitary creature, their soul fragment was now bound to a newborn at the center of a civilization they knew nothing about.

"We wait," Lucian said, his voice hollow. "We wait and see what happens next."

ROSE nodded, though her expression was troubled. "We can't interfere now, not without revealing ourselves. We'll have to monitor the child from a distance, and hope that it adapts to the fragment without drawing too much attention."

Lucian turned back to the screen, watching as the baby—his soul fragment now nestled within—stirred in its crib. The energy surrounding the infant began to settle, the vibrant lights dimming as the integration completed.

Then, slowly, the child's eyes opened for the first time, a deep, knowing gaze staring out at the world.

Lucian's heart pounded in his chest. The child had awakened.

And with it, so had the fragment of his soul.
