Chapter 43 - Part 42: Anti-Climactic Start

I love Fridays. Everything about this day feels so calm and relieving. Much like an Olympic marathoner reaching the finish line, us students managed to survive the school week and are now rewarded with a glorious weekend to relax and enjoy. Well, most would probably end up going out with friends. But not me! I am going to make the most of my weekend by sitting at home and finishing the manga series I've been hooked with recently!

Sure, it's only 9am and I still have 5 more classes for today, but I try not to think about that. I'll keep myself focused on the weekend.

"Good morning, Sugiyama-kun. So, how'd it go with Suzuki-senpai yesterday?"

Asamura said as she walked over to me. Ignoring her is definitely an option here. I could just pretend to be asleep until she gives up. Though I have no idea how I can pull that off when I'm already sitting upright with my eyes open. Man, I miss the quiet days I used to enjoy just a week ago.

"It went more or less okay. We managed to convince Suzuki to go along with the plan."

"That's great! Did Daiki help make that happen? He and Suzuki-senpai are close after all."

"Yeah… He did help out a ton. Though I would have appreciated you giving me a heads up about him."

"Hehe! My bad. I was in a hurry so I didn't really have time to explain."

I doubt anything would change if I had known about Sakakibara Daiki replacing Asamura. I just don't enjoy feeling like I was dancing at the palm of his hands yesterday. I still feel violated somehow.

"Anyway, anything else that happened yesterday?"

"Hmm… Well, Kurebayashi was late and didn't come till after Suzuki had already left."

"Knowing her, she probably got stuck doing club work. Seriously, she needs to dial it down a bit."

"Yeah… But after talking for a bit more, she took me to a cafe in town. We ate and talked and went home after. That's pretty much it."

"Oh okay, that sounds ni—Wait! You went to a cafe with her?!"

Asamura's sudden outburst made everyone in the classroom stop what they were doing. This feels a lot like deja vu. Realizing what she's done, Asamura forced out a laugh and quickly apologized before returning to our conversation.

"Why would she invite you to a cafe???"

"Uh… She wanted to talk with me about something and asked if I could go with her there."

"Okay so what did you guys talk about?"

"That's… really not up to me to tell you. It's kinda personal so just go ask her about it."

I was expecting Asamura to put up more of a fight in getting me to talk. Thankfully, she didn't push the topic and just shrugged her shoulders.

"I get it. Don't worry, I won't pry. Anyway, what about the plan? Since we have Suzuki onboard now, when should we start?"

I pause for a moment to think about her question. I actually haven't thought about it yet, but I guess now would be as good a time as any.

"How about we just do it now? It's Friday so students who hear the rumor today will have the rest of the weekend to talk about it with their friends."

"You seem pretty sure about that."

"Yeah well, what else would you do if you were at home on a Sunday?"

"... Okay, I see your point. In that case, I'll get started on group texting later."

"Thanks. Oh, and can you get Sakakibara Daiki to do it too?"

"Daiki? Okay, I'll ask him."

Asamura walks back to her friend group and immediately takes Daiki to the side to whisper something to him. Afterward, they both take out their phones and begin tapping away. With that, the plan is officially underway.

I imagine a wave of notifications and alerts sounding simultaneously throughout the entire student body. Or at least, that's how I would have liked it to happen. But nothing that grand ever happens in reality. There's no way to really know for sure if the plan failed or succeeded this early on. All we can do now is wait and see.

After they finish group texting, Sakakibara Daiki walks back to his seat while Asamura makes her way back to me.

"It's done. We made sure to keep it simple but interesting enough to make people want to talk about it."

"Can't say that I know anything about how that works, so I'll just trust you on that. Thanks."

"Don't sweat it. It's for Reina-chan's sake too. Speaking of which, we should meet up with her during lunch to tell her that we already started."

Without even waiting for my confirmation, Asamura takes out her phone and begins to text who I assume is Kurebayashi. I was really hoping to spend the rest of today in complete peace. But it looks like I won't even get to eat lunch alone.

"There we go… Ah, she responded. She's up to have lunch with us later. Oh, and she says she brought some beef to share!"

Did she say beef? Okay well, I guess eating with others every once in a while isn't too bad.
