Chapter 7 - Chapter 7:The Prince's Dilemma

!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!¡!

Jian Yu's eyes locked onto Liang Zheng's at the royal banquet, sparking a mix of fear and uncertainty. The prince's gaze seemed to bore into Jian Yu's soul, as if sensing his true intentions. Jian Yu's mind raced, anticipating the prince's next move.

Would Liang Zheng order his arrest or worse?

To stall, Jian Yu bowed deeply, buying time to gather his thoughts. "Your Highness, I—"

"Rise, Jian Yu," Liang Zheng commanded, his voice low and mysterious.

Jian Yu obeyed, meeting Liang Zheng's intense gaze.

"What brings you to my banquet?" Liang Zheng asked, his eyes narrowing.

Jian Yu chose his words carefully, revealing his rebellion's goal: to bring down Liang Zheng's corrupt regime.

Jian Yu took a deep breath.

"I came seeking evidence of your corruption, Liang Zheng," Jian Yu admitted, his voice steady.

Liang Zheng's expression changed from skepticism to surprise.

"Why?" Liang Zheng asked, genuinely curious.

"Because the people suffer under your rule," Jian Yu replied. "I want to bring you down."

Liang Zheng paced, his eyes never leaving Jian Yu's.

"I expected deceit, not honesty," Liang Zheng said. "You're either very brave or very foolish."

Jian Yu stood firm.

"I'm fighting for justice."

Liang Zheng stopped pacing.

"I understand," Liang Zheng said. "But do you know the whole truth?"

Jian Yu hesitated.

"What do you mean?" Jian Yu asked.

Liang Zheng's gaze intensified.

"My father, the emperor, holds the true power," Liang Zheng revealed. "I'm just a puppet."

Jian Yu's mind reeled.

"A puppet?" Jian Yu repeated.

Liang Zheng nodded.

Jian Yu's eyes narrowed.

"Proof?" Jian Yu requested. "I won't take your word for it."

Liang Zheng nodded.

"Follow me," Liang Zheng said.

He led Jian Yu to a hidden chamber deep within the palace.

Documents and scrolls filled the room, detailing.

"The emperor's corruption, embezzlement, and tyranny," Liang Zheng explained.

Jian Yu scanned the documents, his mind racing.

"This is damning evidence," Jian Yu admitted.

"But how do I know you're not manipulating me?" Jian Yu asked.

Liang Zheng's expression turned solemn.

"I swear on my honor, Jian Yu," Liang Zheng said. "I want change."

Jian Yu searched Liang Zheng's eyes.

Sincerity?

Or deception?

"I want to break free, Jian Yu," Liang Zheng said. "Help me."

Jian Yu's thoughts swirled. Can he trust Liang Zheng?

"I want to make amends," Liang Zheng said, his voice filled with conviction. "My father's rule has brought suffering. I want to change that."

Jian Yu's skepticism lingered.

"How?" Jian Yu asked.

Liang Zheng's eyes locked onto Jian Yu's.

"By working together," Liang Zheng replied. "And by being honest about my feelings."

Jian Yu's heart skipped a beat.

"Feelings?" Jian Yu repeated.

Liang Zheng's face flushed.

"For you, Jian Yu," Liang Zheng confessed. "I've never felt this way before."

Jian Yu's resolve strengthened.

"Liang Zheng, I—"

"Please, hear me out," Liang Zheng interrupted. "I know our worlds are different, but I see something in you – courage, conviction, and compassion."

Jian Yu's emotions swirled.

"Liang Zheng, this is madness," Jian Yu protested.

"Perhaps," Liang Zheng said, "but I'd rather risk everything for a chance at truth and love."

Their gazes held, the air thick with tension.

Unbeknownst to them, Minister Wang watched from the shadows, listening to their conversation.

"The prince consorts with rebels?" Wang thought. "And his feelings for Jian Yu...unseemly."

Wang's eyes narrowed.

"This information could topple Liang Zheng's credibility."

He hastened to spread the rumors:

"The prince is tainted by unnatural desires...and treasonous alliances."

Palace whispers spread like wildfire:

"Liang Zheng, the rebel-loving prince...and his illicit affair with Jian Yu."

Nobles and officials murmured, scandalized.

The emperor, enraged, summoned Liang Zheng.

"Explain these allegations!" the emperor thundered.

Liang Zheng stood firm.

"I assure you, Father, these allegations are baseless," Liang Zheng said.

The emperor's face reddened.

"Then explain your meetings with Jian Yu," the emperor demanded.

Liang Zheng chose his words carefully.

"Jian Yu is a rebel leader. I sought to negotiate, to understand their grievances."

The emperor's skepticism deepened.

"And the whispers of your...affection for him?"

Liang Zheng's face flushed.

"A vicious lie, Father. I am committed to my duty and the empire's prosperity."

The emperor's gaze lingered, searching for truth.

"Very well," the emperor said finally. "But be warned, Liang Zheng: any hint of treason or impropriety will be met with swift punishment."

Liang Zheng bowed.

"I understand, Father."

But the emperor's words masked a hidden intention:

"Minister Wang, investigate Liang Zheng's loyalty. I want proof of his treachery."

Minister Wang bowed.

"As you wish, Your Majesty."

Meanwhile, Jian Yu received a cryptic message:

"Beware, Liang Zheng's denial will be his downfall."

From an unknown sender.

Minister Wang, a seasoned official, stood outside Liang Zheng's private chamber, uneasy.

"He's considering a rebel?" Wang thought, dismayed. "The prince must marry and produce an heir, securing the dynasty's future."

Wang recalled the emperor's words:

"Liang Zheng's marriage will strengthen alliances and ensure stability."

But Liang Zheng's fascination with Jian Yu threatened those plans.

Wang decided to intervene.

"Your Highness," Wang said, entering the chamber. "May I offer counsel?"

Liang Zheng looked up, his expression guarded.

"Speak, Minister Wang."

"The empire requires stability, Your Highness," Wang began. "A suitable marriage would—"

"I'm aware of my duties, Minister," Liang Zheng interrupted.

"Then consider Princess Xi of the neighboring kingdom," Wang suggested. "Her family's influence would bolster our borders."

Liang Zheng's gaze turned cold.

"I won't be tied to a marriage of convenience."

Wang's concern deepened.

"But, Your Highness, the prince's role demands sacrifice. Jian Yu, a rebel, cannot be—"

"Enough, Minister," Liang Zheng said, his voice firm. "My personal life is not for debate."

Wang bowed, withdrawing.

"I fear for the empire's future," Wang thought, departing.

Liang Zheng's resolve hardened.

He would follow his heart, no matter the cost.

Meanwhile, Jian Yu struggled with his own feelings.

After receiving the message he went to see his highness and overheard the conversation between the minister and the prince

Jian Yu stood hidden outside Liang Zheng's chamber, listening to the conversation between the prince and Minister Wang.

"A suitable marriage would strengthen alliances and ensure stability," Wang said.

Liang Zheng's response sent Jian Yu's heart racing:

"I won't be tied to a marriage of convenience."

Jian Yu's thoughts swirled.

The prince's words hinted at genuine feelings, but Jian Yu couldn't shake his doubts.

"He's a prince, bound by duty," Jian Yu thought. "Can his feelings truly be genuine?"

As Wang departed, Jian Yu slipped inside, his expression guarded.

"Liang Zheng, I've heard enough," Jian Yu said, his voice firm.

Liang Zheng's eyes locked onto Jian Yu's.

"Jian Yu, my feelings—"

"Are a luxury you can't afford," Jian Yu interrupted. "You're a prince, bound by duty and tradition. I'm a rebel, sworn to bring you down."

Liang Zheng's face fell.

"Don't say that, Jian Yu. What we share—"

"Is nothing but a political game," Jian Yu said, his voice cold. "I won't be a pawn in your royal manipulations."

Liang Zheng's eyes pleaded.

"Jian Yu, please—"

"No, Liang Zheng," Jian Yu said, turning to leave. "I'll never be yours."

The door closed behind Jian Yu, leaving Liang Zheng shattered.

Minister Wang, waiting outside, smiled.

"The rebel has rejected the prince," Wang thought. "Now, we can proceed with the arranged marriage."

But Liang Zheng's determination hardened.

"I'll prove my love to Jian Yu," Liang Zheng vowed. "No matter the cost."

Jian Yu returned to the rebellion, his heart heavy.

"Brother Fang, I've rejected the prince," Jian Yu reported.

Brother Fang's expression turned calculating.

"Well done, Jian Yu. Now, we'll use this to our advantage."

But Jian Yu sensed unease.

"Have I made a mistake?" he wondered.

,

Days passed, and the emperor announced Liang Zheng's engagement to Princess Xi.

"A union to solidify our power," the emperor declared.

Liang Zheng felt trapped, his heart heavy with the thought of marrying someone he didn't love.

Jian Yu learned of the engagement and pondered the situation.

"Liang Zheng, betrayed by his own father," Jian Yu thought.

A rebel messenger approached Jian Yu.

"Jian Yu, Liang Zheng's wedding will distract the emperor. We can strike during the ceremony."

Jian Yu considered the plan.

Just then, Liang Zheng arrived, carrying a bundle of documents.

"Proof of my father's corruption," Liang Zheng said, handing Jian Yu the papers.

Jian Yu scanned the documents:

Ledgers detailing embezzled funds.

Letters from officials reporting corruption.

A journal belonging to Liang Zheng's mother, revealing the emperor's involvement in her murder.

Jian Yu's eyes widened.

"This changes everything," Jian Yu thought.

But could he trust Liang Zheng?
