Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Calm Before the Storm

Tang paced the quiet halls of the Southern Air Temple, the familiar smell of wood and incense filling the air. He had been training relentlessly, pushing himself harder each day, but as he advanced, he felt the weight of his limitations pressing down on him.

The Proficiency System had been an incredible asset, but it couldn't completely bypass the challenges that came with true mastery. Each level he gained seemed to require more effort, more time, and more focus than the last.He headed to the library, a vast room filled with scrolls and books that chronicled the history of bending and the philosophies of the Air Nomads.

His heart raced at the thought of uncovering more about airbending and the legends surrounding it. With the comet approaching in just two days, he needed all the knowledge he could gather. As he stepped inside, the cool air enveloped him, and he felt a sense of calm wash over him. The library was a sanctuary of silence, a place where he could immerse himself in study without the distractions of the outside world. He wandered through the aisles, scanning the titles, searching for anything related to airbending or the history of the Air Nomads.

Hours passed as he poured over ancient texts, scribbling notes and highlighting key passages. He learned about the principles of airbending—how it was not merely about manipulating the wind but understanding the flow of energy and the importance of adaptability.

He found sections detailing the potential devastation that could occur when the comet passed, and he felt a chill run down his spine. He couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out. The old monks had always spoken of the Fire Nation as a distant threat, an enemy that wouldn't dare reach the sacred heights of the Southern Air Temple.

But Tang felt differently. He knew they were coming. He had to warn the monks, but every time he tried, they dismissed him as just a child—an overexcited boy with wild imaginations."Don't be foolish, Tang," one monk had said dismissively. "The cliffs are steep, and the rocs are vigilant. No one could climb this high without our notice."But deep down, Tang sensed a knowledge behind their calm exterior, as if they were aware of the impending doom yet unwilling to confront it.

On the day before the comet's arrival, Tang decided to confront the head monk. He found Master Gyatso in the courtyard, meditating under a large, ancient tree. The sun filtered through the leaves, casting dappled shadows on the ground.

"Master Gyatso," Tang said, stepping forward. "I need to talk to you about the Fire Nation. They're planning to attack. I can feel it."The old monk opened his eyes slowly, studying Tang with a calm demeanor. "You mustn't let fear cloud your judgment, young one. The Fire Nation has not dared to venture here.""But—" Tang started, desperation creeping into his voice.Gyatso raised a hand, silencing him. "Aang is destined to bring balance to the world. It is his path to learn airbending and fulfill his role as the Avatar. You must trust in his journey."A pang of frustration flared within Tang. "What if that journey takes him away from the temple when the attack comes? We need to be prepared!"

"Everything is as it should be," Gyatso said, a hint of sadness in his eyes. "The world is in a delicate state. Aang's destiny is intertwined with the balance of the elements.

Do not lose sight of that."Tang felt a wave of helplessness wash over him. He turned away, anger and fear swirling within him. He returned to the library, determined to gather as much information as he could before the comet arrived. As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the temple in shades of orange and purple, Tang immersed himself in texts that spoke of airbending techniques and philosophies.

He wanted to be ready for anything, even if it meant fighting against the expectations of those around him.The following morning, Aang came running into the library, excitement radiating from him.

"Tang! You won't believe what Master Gyatso just told me!"Tang looked up from his scroll, his heart racing.

"What happened?"Aang grinned, his eyes sparkling with wonder.

"He told me I'm the Avatar! It's my destiny to learn the elements and bring balance to the world!"Tang's stomach dropped. The very thing he feared was unfolding right before him.

"Aang, that's great, but we have to talk about the Fire Nation. They're coming! We need to be prepared!"Aang's smile faltered.

"What do you mean? How do you know?""I just know," Tang said, urgency seeping into his tone. "The comet is coming, and the Fire Nation will attack. We can't ignore it!"Aang's expression shifted to one of concern. "I'll talk to Master Gyatso. Maybe he'll listen to me."The two hurried back to the courtyard, where Master Gyatso sat in quiet meditation. Aang approached him with a determined look.

"Master Gyatso, I need to speak with you about Tang's concerns. He thinks the Fire Nation is planning to attack!"Gyatso opened his eyes and looked at Aang, his expression unreadable. "And what do you believe, Aang?""I—I believe Tang. We can't just wait and hope nothing happens. If the Fire Nation is coming, we need to prepare!"

Gyatso sighed deeply, his brow furrowing. "You are right to be concerned, Aang. The world is shifting, and the Fire Nation's ambition knows no bounds. However, we must also trust in the protective barriers of this temple and the strength of the airbenders.""But what if they find a way?"

Tang pressed, desperation creeping into his voice again. "We can't just sit here and do nothing!"The head monk regarded him for a long moment, then nodded slowly. "You are brave to voice your fears, Tang. But as you know, fear can be a powerful motivator. You must channel it wisely."

As the sun began to rise higher in the sky, casting warm light over the temple, Tang felt a weight settle on his shoulders. He knew deep down that they were running out of time. The comet would soon streak across the sky, a harbinger of destruction for the Air Nomads.Aang turned to him, determination shining in his eyes. "We won't let anything happen to the temple, I promise.""Just promise me you'll be ready to fight back," Tang urged, feeling a sense of urgency. "I'll do everything I can to help, even if it means training harder than ever."

With the comet approaching, Tang knew that their lives were about to change forever. He would continue to train, read, and prepare, not just for himself but for his brother and the entire Air Nation. The storm was coming, and they had to be ready to face it head-on.
