Chapter 52 - The Frog

Driven by uncontrollable primal desires, he was a killer demon, a devout follower of the "Rainy Night Frog Man."

The first person he killed was the doctor who bluntly told him he had a medical issue.

He still vividly remembered that night. It was midnight, pouring rain. A beautiful female doctor, walking alone under a streetlight with an umbrella, was so tempting. Her tall, slender shadow stretched out in an alluring curve.

From then on, every person he killed had the shadow of that female doctor.

He thought he was powerful—physically and mentally strong—until he met the man in front of him: Zhen Jianren.

He had set his sights on a female intern at a well-known law firm. Like his previous targets, she was youthful, beautiful, and carried an aloofness that kept people at a distance.

Luo Yi, in disguise, created an opportunity to interact with her under the pretense of legal consultation. During their conversation, he found that same feeling in her. When he shared his situation, the contempt in her eyes was unmistakable. It was followed by polite distancing and, finally, a sense of unapproachable superiority.

After several attempts at stalking her, he finally waited for his chance. But what he didn't expect was that his plans had already been seen through by Zhen Jianren, who worked at the same firm.

In the silent underground parking lot, he wasn't the only predator. The man who had taken off his suit was as strong as a tiger, and after just a few moves, he had Luo Yi on the ground. The man looked down at him from above.

The once aloof prey now had stars in her eyes, yearning to throw herself into Zhen Jianren's arms.

A classic "hero saves the beauty" scene—old-fashioned, yet effective.

As he lay there humiliated, Luo Yi couldn't help but think back to that female doctor, remembering her disdainful face when she gave him his diagnosis.

How hateful.

Then something unexpected happened.

"Hey," Zhen Jianren looked down at him with an unreadable expression on his face, "do you want her?"

Luo Yi froze.

The girl who had just survived the ordeal also froze.

As he processed the question, Luo Yi tried to open his mouth, but he couldn't speak. The metallic taste of blood exploded on his tongue.

"Sorry," Zhen Jianren smiled, "I forgot."

He lifted his foot off Luo Yi's chest, allowing him to gasp for air.

"I do!" Luo Yi's eyes glinted red as blood dripped from his mouth.

"But after this is done, I need you to go somewhere with me," Zhen Jianren said, tilting his head, ignoring the girl's horrified and disbelieving stare.

Luo Yi considered this for a moment before agreeing. "Okay!"

"Aren't you curious about where that place is?" Zhen Jianren's eyes glinted, as if something from another world flickered within them.

For the first time, the self-proclaimed madman, Luo Yi, felt fear under that gaze.

Zhen Jianren's smile faded, and he didn't wait for an answer. "It's a nightmare," he said, exhaling slowly before turning into the nearby darkness.

"I'll come find you," Zhen Jianren's voice echoed from the shadows.

After that encounter, Luo Yi seemed to fall into a strange loop. Unlike before, he now discarded women's bodies far away, burying them deep in the mountains and forests.

He changed cities, moving to a remote town. He rented a basement apartment in a place called "Warm Home Community" from an elderly man living alone.

Luo Yi was used to an upside-down lifestyle, so the dark and damp conditions didn't bother him. What bothered him was what happened that first midnight.

It started to rain—a light drizzle tapping on the windows.

And then, he heard footsteps—a pair of black leather shoes stepping through the rain.

"Hello," said the man in a pure white suit, holding a dripping black umbrella. His face carried that same familiar smile, but the madness in his eyes was now all-consuming.

"I've come for you."

Luo Yi's mental defenses crumbled. He didn't even consider resisting or running away. Zhen Jianren sat in front of him and showed him a video.

It was footage from the parking lot that night.

But it only showed him and the woman.

Everything that followed felt like a dream. Zhen Jianren led him, as if in a trance, to an entirely unfamiliar world.

It was a place of pure evil.

They entered through a door that should not have existed: the Nightmare Gate, as the locals called it.

There, Luo Yi acted as Zhen Jianren's assistant, while Zhen Jianren took care of his problems in the real world. Thanks to Zhen Jianren's protection, Luo Yi had survived until now.

They had already completed two missions together. But this time, Luo Yi could sense that even Zhen Jianren was starting to feel lost.

He stared blankly at Zhen Jianren's back, deep in thought.

Zhen Jianren stopped in his tracks. "We don't have much time. We need to split up," he said, turning to Luo Yi.

"Split up?" Luo Yi was surprised.

"I'll go to Class 1, you go to Class 2," Zhen Jianren instructed. "Use our roles, and don't arouse suspicion."

The choir was made up of students from various third-year classes.

Luo Yi's expression changed slightly. "Isn't that too risky? If we jump into the plot like that, won't it alert the ghost..."

He didn't finish the sentence.

"I know what you're thinking," Zhen Jianren said. "We could go around and gather information from different classes, but we don't have time!" He took a deep breath. "Right now, our biggest enemy is time! We've already been marked."

"Okay," Luo Yi nodded. He knew the situation was serious, so he turned to leave.

"Wait!"

Luo Yi turned back toward Zhen Jianren.

"If a student asks for your name, what will you say?" Zhen Jianren asked.

Luo Yi paused, then answered, "Luo Yi. It's a fake name anyway."

Zhen Jianren shook his head. "No," he stared into Luo Yi's eyes and said slowly, "tell them your name is Zhou Taifu."

Luo Yi's eyes widened in shock, but he nodded. "Understood."

"What about you?" Luo Yi asked.

"Fatty says he's an orphan with no name, Hao Shuai is likely a fake name, and Yuwen is out of the question," Luo Yi seemed to be plotting for his companions. "It's a shame Zhang Yinyin's name is clearly feminine. Otherwise, you could use hers."

"I have my ways," Zhen Jianren replied. "We'll meet in front of the door in two hours."

"Alright."

Luo Yi quickly left.

Zhen Jianren remained still, watching Luo Yi's figure until it disappeared around the corridor. His face, which had been serious, suddenly became calm.

"Luo Zhanfei."
