"I don't understand what you mean," the man in a suit said politely. "Is there something unusual after dark?"
The woman turned her head, looking at him with a very strange gaze.
The man in the suit did not avoid her stare, smiling back until she looked away and turned to leave the old dormitory building.
She said nothing.
The middle-aged man in a tank top wanted to catch up and ask her a few more questions, but the woman vanished like a ghost. Though her pace seemed slow, she turned a corner and disappeared.
"Where did she go?" the middle-aged man, who was on the brink of breaking down, asked shakily. He couldn't comprehend this world, unable to fathom how a living person could vanish in the blink of an eye.
"Curious? Just go ask her," the young man in a baseball cap said nonchalantly, chewing gum and glancing at the middle-aged man. "Maybe she'll take you along."
The man felt the group's displeasure directed at him after being dismissed, so he fell silent and obediently followed behind.
The further they went inside, the more palpable the eerie feeling became.
A sinister atmosphere surrounded them, as if a pair of crimson eyes, bloodshot and fixated, were watching them from the shadows.
Yet they could not find it.
A dark, damp odor assaulted them, mingled with the scent of mold and other indescribable things.
The corridor was littered with debris, forcing them to walk down the center.
After locating the stairs on the right, they carefully ascended.
The dormitory gave off a distinctly terrible vibe, with black mold and dark yellow stains covering the walls.
On the floor lay piles of unidentified fluff, seemingly abandoned for ages.
The fatty frowned and leaned in as if to say something, but was stopped by Jiang Cheng.
He took a quick step forward, creating distance between himself and the fatty.
The girl in dinosaur pajamas was hiding in the middle of the group, her eyes red. She whispered, "It looks so eerie here. Something bad won't happen, right?"
The man in the baseball cap adjusted his tilted hat and sneered, "From my perspective, something definitely went wrong; otherwise, it wouldn't be abandoned."
"What could have happened here?" the middle-aged man in the tank top's eyes twitched.
The man in the baseball cap smirked and, lowering his voice, said mysteriously, "Someone might have died here."
At the mention of death, the middle-aged man and several others in the group shivered, while the girl in dinosaur pajamas started to sob again.
She could have cried harder, but perhaps fearing that loud crying would attract something, she struggled to suppress it, yet tears flowed down her cheeks.
But this wasn't the real world; there was no overflowing compassion here.
Or rather, those who were overly sympathetic had likely perished in earlier tasks.
Even the suave man in the suit, who had maintained his gentlemanly image, couldn't hide a flicker of disgust. Although he quickly masked it with a calm demeanor, Jiang Cheng noticed.
"Brother in the suit!" Jiang Cheng called out.
The man in the suit turned and looked at Jiang Cheng, puzzled. "What is it?"
"I think you're really a good person," Jiang Cheng said earnestly, "Having you on our team will greatly increase all our chances of survival. You're not only sunny but also very helpful."
The man in the suit was momentarily taken aback, seemingly not understanding why Jiang Cheng suddenly said this. However, he found the compliment quite pleasing, as it helped him maintain his persona.
"It's nothing," he nodded with a smile. "Since we've met, it's fate. I will do my utmost to ensure everyone's safety."
This was the first time the fatty heard Jiang Cheng compliment someone, and a bad feeling arose in his heart.
"Well said," Jiang Cheng praised, then turned to the girl in dinosaur pajamas and the middle-aged man in the tank top. "The brother in the suit has made his stance; why aren't you hurrying to his side? He will protect you!"
The man in the suit: "???"
The fatty: "I feel like I've seen this plot somewhere before."
In an instant, several people rushed to the man in the suit's side. The girl in dinosaur pajamas, though looking fragile, was the first to grab his left arm.
Another newcomer, a young man, was slightly slower but managed to seize his right arm.
The middle-aged man in the tank top was a beat late due to age.
By the time he arrived, the good spots next to the man in the suit had already been claimed, leaving him to stretch out and grasp the man's collar.
Thus, the man in the suit was pushed to the front, unable to move away, all the while soothing everyone with his genteel tone.
Finally reaching the fourth floor, the man in the suit excused himself to fetch the keys, shaking off the people who clung to him like they were attached.
At this moment, his face flushed, and the reason wasn't just the crowding but also Jiang Cheng's admiring gaze directed at him, genuinely believing he was a good person.
"Alright," the man in the suit said. "Since everyone trusts me so much, I'll assign the rooms now."
According to his allocation, the woman in the cheongsam and the girl in dinosaur pajamas would share Room 407, while the middle-aged man in the tank top, the newcomer, and another woman with darker skin would stay in Room 406, and he would share Room 405 with the man in the baseball cap.
His gaze went from one person to another, and when it landed on Jiang Cheng, his smile turned insincere. "This brother, I see you already know the chubby brother; you two can stay in Room 404."
Room 404 sounded ominous.
The fatty was about to refuse, but Jiang Cheng patted his shoulder and agreed with a remarkably relaxed attitude.
It was clear that besides the fatty, others were also dissatisfied with their room assignments, but as night approached, everyone had no choice but to return to their rooms.
After all, having a door between them and the eerie corridor was safer than standing in it.
Receiving the keys and opening the door, the fatty was still shocked by the scene inside, even though he was mentally prepared.
