Chereads / Multiversal Ascension System / Chapter 9 - The Road to Power

Chapter 9 - The Road to Power

Keitaro trudged through the dense forest, his body aching from exhaustion but his mind buzzing with excitement. The fight against the Darkwood Beast had pushed him to his limits, but he had won. And now with the system shop unlocked he was finally starting to feel like he had the tools he needed to take control of his journey in this strange new world.

The moon hung high in the sky, casting a pale glow over the forest. Shadows stretched long across the ground, and the only sounds were the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant calls of nocturnal creatures. Keitaro kept his senses on high alert he had learned the hard way that danger could appear at any moment.

But despite the lingering tension in the air Keitaro couldn't help but smile. He had leveled up to 5, unlocked the system shop, and most importantly, survived another day in this world. With the Darkwood Beast defeated, he felt a growing sense of accomplishment and, dare he say, confidence.

His gaze flicked to the system screen that hovered in his field of vision, displaying the unlocked System Shop options. It was time to invest his hard-earned XP and prepare for whatever came next.

"Alright, let's see what we've got here," Keitaro muttered to himself, scrolling through the available items in the shop.

System Shop

Basic Healing Potion: 100 XP

Mana Restoration Elixir: 120 XP

Basic Weapon (Sword, Dagger, Staff): 150 XP

Skill Unlock (Tier 1): 200 XP

Bloodline Power (Tier 1): 500 XP

Keitaro's eyes lingered on the Bloodline Power (Tier 1) option. The idea of unlocking some kind of special bloodline—like the powerful families in anime who could inherit insane abilities—was tempting. It would take most of his XP, but it could give him a serious edge. Still, with his health and mana dangerously low, he needed to be practical right now.

"Let's start small," Keitaro reasoned, his fingers hovering over the Basic Healing Potion and Mana Restoration Elixir options. "No use having a bloodline if I'm dead."

He selected both items, spending 220 XP in total. The shop window disappeared, and two small, glowing bottles appeared in his inventory. With a thought, he materialized them in his hands one filled with a shimmering green liquid and the other with a deep blue liquid.

"Time to heal up," Keitaro muttered. He uncorked the healing potion and drank it in one gulp. The effect was immediate a soothing warmth spread through his body, and the pain in his muscles began to fade. He felt his strength returning as his health slowly restored.

Next, he downed the mana elixir. The cool, refreshing liquid coursed through him, and he felt his mana reserves refill like a battery being charged. His mind cleared, and he let out a long breath of relief.

"That's more like it."

Keitaro checked his status screen once again.

He felt significantly better, almost like he hadn't just been through a life-and-death battle with a giant beast. His health and mana were back to manageable levels, and now that his body wasn't screaming in pain, he could focus on what really mattered: getting stronger.

Keitaro turned his attention back to the system shop. He still had a decent amount of XP left, and now that he was feeling better, he could afford to think more strategically. The idea of unlocking a new skill or weapon was appealing, but that Bloodline Power option still tugged at his mind.

Bloodlines in anime were often game-changers. They granted unique abilities or power boosts that could turn an average fighter into a powerhouse. Keitaro could already imagine the possibilities: unlocking something like a Saiyan bloodline from Dragon Ball, a Uchiha bloodline from Naruto, or even something unique to this world.

It's risky, Keitaro thought, rubbing his chin. But it could pay off big time.

With a determined nod, he made his decision. "Bloodline Power it is."

He selected the Bloodline Power (Tier 1) option, and a new screen appeared before him.

Bloodline Power Options:

Draconic Bloodline: Grants the user enhanced physical abilities, elemental breath attacks, and resistance to magic.

Shadowblood Lineage: Provides the user with control over shadows, stealth abilities, and increased agility.

Phoenix Heritage: Grants the power of regeneration, fire-based attacks, and temporary invulnerability.

Beastkin Bloodline: Enhances physical strength, reflexes, and grants the ability to communicate with animals.

Celestial Ancestry: Bestows light-based powers, healing abilities, and flight at higher levels.

Keitaro's eyes widened at the options. Each one sounded more powerful than the last. Draconic Bloodline promised brute strength and magical resistance, Shadowblood Lineage offered stealth and agility, and Phoenix Heritage practically guaranteed immortality with its regeneration. The Beastkin Bloodline was tempting for its raw power and animal communication, while the Celestial Ancestry provided healing and the potential for flight.

What do I go with? Keitaro wondered, his heart racing. Each choice had its appeal, but one bloodline stood out more than the others.

"The Phoenix Heritage," Keitaro said aloud. "Regeneration, fire attacks, and temporary invulnerability? That's basically the ultimate survival power."

Without hesitation, he selected Phoenix Heritage. The system responded with a familiar chime.

Congratulations! You have unlocked the Phoenix Heritage Bloodline.

Abilities unlocked:

Flame Strike (Level 1): Summon a burst of fire to strike your enemies.

Regeneration (Level 1): Recover from minor injuries over time.

Phoenix Spirit (Passive): Increases resistance to fire-based attacks and boosts overall vitality.

Keitaro's body tingled as the new bloodline activated. He felt a surge of warmth spread through him, like a flame igniting inside his core. His muscles tightened with new strength, and his skin buzzed with energy. For a brief moment, he could feel the power of the phoenix flowing through him—like he had tapped into something ancient and primal.

"This is… incredible," Keitaro whispered, flexing his fingers and feeling the heat radiate from his hands. He could sense the fire inside him, ready to be unleashed at a moment's notice.

Flame Strike, huh? Keitaro thought, excitement bubbling inside him. He glanced around the forest, spotting a small boulder a few feet away. It seemed like the perfect target for a test.

Keitaro extended his hand toward the boulder, concentrating on the flame inside him. "Flame Strike!"

In an instant, a burst of fire shot from his palm, streaking through the air and slamming into the boulder. The fire exploded on impact, sending sparks flying and leaving a scorch mark on the stone. Keitaro's eyes widened in awe as he felt the residual heat from the attack.

I actually have fire powers!

He couldn't help but grin. This was exactly the kind of power boost he needed. With the Phoenix Heritage bloodline, he not only had the ability to heal himself, but he could also dish out some serious firepower. And that was only the beginning—he knew there would be more to unlock as he leveled up.

Keitaro checked his status screen again, eager to see how the new bloodline had affected his stats.

His health was fully restored, thanks to the bloodline's passive regeneration, and his mana was stable enough for now. With his new abilities in hand, Keitaro felt like a completely different person compared to the scared, clueless otaku who had first arrived in this world.

"I'm getting stronger," he said quietly to himself, a fierce determination burning in his chest. "I'm not just some guy running for his life anymore."

He clenched his fists, feeling the heat of the phoenix inside him. The thrill of newfound power was intoxicating, but Keitaro knew he couldn't get carried away. Rafe and his men were still out there, likely searching for him, and who knew what other threats lurked in this world?

"I need to stay sharp. No time to celebrate just yet."

Keitaro scanned the forest, weighing his options. He was still on the outskirts of Darkwood Village, but after everything that had happened with Rafe and his crew, going back there seemed like a bad idea. He needed to find a new place to regroup somewhere with people who could give him more information about this world.

The system chimed in with a helpful reminder.

New Quest: Seek Allies

Objective: Find a source of knowledge or allies who can assist in your journey.

Rewards: 300 XP, Skill Upgrade.

Penalty: Continued isolation and lack of resources.

Keitaro nodded. "Right. I still need to find someone who can help me figure out what's really going on."

With renewed purpose, Keitaro set off through the forest, his senses sharp and his new powers humming beneath the surface. The forest was vast and unfamiliar, but Keitaro trusted that the system would guide him in the right direction.

As he walked, the trees grew thicker, the canopy above blocking out most of the moonlight. The air felt cooler, and the sounds of the forest seemed to fade into a low, eerie silence. Keitaro kept his guard up, his eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of movement.

After about an hour of walking, he noticed something odd up ahead a faint glow, barely visible through the trees. It wasn't firelight, but it shimmered in the darkness like a soft, bluish-white aura.

Keitaro's curiosity piqued, and he cautiously approached the source of the glow. As he moved closer, he could make out the outline of a large, ancient-looking stone structure, half-covered by vines and moss. The glow seemed to be emanating from the stones themselves, casting a soft light over the surrounding area.

"What is this place?" Keitaro murmured, stepping into the clearing. The structure looked like some kind of ancient temple, its walls weathered and crumbling, but the glow gave it an otherworldly, mystical feel.

Keitaro approached the entrance, his footsteps echoing faintly in the stillness. He hesitated for a moment, glancing around to make sure he wasn't being followed. The air was thick with an almost magical energy, and Keitaro could feel the hairs on the back of his neck stand on end.

"This place… feels important," he whispered, his eyes drawn to the glowing symbols carved into the stone walls. They looked ancient, like something out of a lost civilization, and Keitaro had no idea what they meant.

But he had a feeling that whatever was inside this temple could help him.

"Alright, let's see what secrets you're hiding," Keitaro muttered, stepping into the entrance of the temple.

As soon as he crossed the threshold, the glow intensified, filling the entire chamber with light. Keitaro squinted, trying to adjust to the sudden brightness.

Then, from the far end of the chamber, a voice echoed through the temple—calm, deep, and filled with power.

"You… who carry the flame of the Phoenix. Step forward."

Keitaro froze his heart racing. He wasn't alone.
