Chapter 15 - Ch 15. Ripple in Time

Alex stood frozen, watching the balloon that carried Team Rocket disappear into the distance. The faint hiss of their retreating voices echoed in his ears, but it wasn't their threat that bothered him. It was something else. A subtle, yet unnerving shift that sent a chill down his spine.

[System Notification]:

Minor Timeline Deviation Detected. Canon event disrupted. Proceed with caution.

---

The words burned in his mind like a smoldering ember, forcing his heart to race. He'd anticipated this moment, knowing that his mere presence in this world could potentially cause ripples, but seeing it laid out so clearly—an actual deviation—felt different. What had he done?

Alex had always prided himself on his memory, on knowing this world so well. This was the Pokémon universe he had lived and breathed through games, shows, and countless fan theories. He had the knowledge of events, characters, battles—he had a map in his head. But the moment the system registered the deviation, that certainty shattered.

"Timeline deviation?" His internal voice trembled, repeating the words over and over. How could some minor 'change' matter?

He glanced around the Pokémon Center. Misty was returning her Staryu, a look of satisfaction on her face after the brief skirmish with Team Rocket. Pikachu lay resting on the bed, with Ash close by, his focus entirely on his partner's recovery. Everything seemed… fine. Almost normal. But the system doesn't lie.

Alex's thoughts raced, sifting through the battle just now. Was it because he had taken such an active role? Was it his suggestion to Misty during the fight? Had that disrupted some invisible thread of the timeline? Or was it the Tactical Insight skill, allowing him to predict Team Rocket's moves more effectively than they could have anticipated?

"Canon event disrupted…" he repeated inwardly. It was the first time the system had called something "canon". His mind drifted back to all the events he knew, those key moments in the storyline that were supposed to happen as they had in the anime and games. Team Rocket was meant to lose here—he hadn't changed the outcome—but how they lost was different. The ease with which he'd guided Misty to outmaneuver them, the way he had intervened…

The deviation wasn't necessarily catastrophic, but it was a crack. A tiny fracture in the glass that held this world together. And if he wasn't careful, that crack could spread.

What if this change leads to more? What if the ripple I caused grows into a wave?

Suddenly, the gravity of his situation weighed down on him more than ever. This wasn't just a nostalgic fantasy, a chance to live out his dreams as a Pokémon trainer. He was part of something bigger now—something fragile. Each step he took, each decision he made could send this world spiraling in directions even he couldn't predict.

Alex clenched his fists. Could I make things better, or could I ruin everything?

The idea of playing God unnerved him. The world he had admired for so long, full of excitement and adventure, was also built on a delicate balance. If he disrupted it too much, would Ash even become the champion he was meant to be? Would Team Rocket, bumbling though they were, escalate into a greater threat because of him? He had so many advantages—his knowledge, his abilities, the system—but every advantage came with a cost.

His heart pounded as the reality of it all hit him: he wasn't just another trainer here. He was something entirely different. An anomaly.

But then, another thought surfaced—a quieter, yet more determined one. Maybe I can fix things. Maybe… I can make it better.

The deviation had happened. He couldn't undo that. But now that he was aware of it, perhaps he could use that knowledge to ensure the future didn't spiral out of control. Perhaps he could nudge the timeline in a way that helped—not hindered.

But how much could I change?

His gaze drifted toward Ash and Pikachu. They were key players in this story. *The* key players. If Ash's journey stayed mostly intact, then maybe this timeline wouldn't unravel too quickly. But what about the smaller details? Would helping people here and there, like he had with Misty, lead to something bigger? Or was it possible to preserve the integrity of the timeline while still achieving his own goals?

Alex swallowed hard. This wasn't a game where he could reset from a save point if things went wrong. The stakes were higher, and he would need to tread carefully from here on out. He couldn't afford to be reckless. Not with the timeline, not with his actions, and certainly not with his powers.

But I'm not backing down.

A quiet resolve hardened in his chest. Yes, the system had warned him. Yes, he had caused a deviation. But now that he knew, he could be smarter about it. He wasn't going to live in fear of every decision, paralyzed by the worry of what might go wrong. If this world was fragile, then he'd handle it carefully. But he'd also handle it with purpose.

The system is my guide, but I'm the one steering this ship now.

Alex exhaled slowly, grounding himself. The weight of his situation hadn't lightened, but he felt more in control. He wasn't just going to sit back and let things happen around him. If there was one thing he'd learned from his time playing games, it was that nothing ever goes according to plan. You adapt. You learn. You find new ways forward.

His mind cleared as the notification faded from his thoughts, but its message stayed etched in the back of his mind, a reminder of the power and responsibility he carried.

Misty concerned, "Hey Alex, are you okay?" Misty's voice broke his focus as she walked over to him, holding out her hand. "Nice work back there. You helped turn the tide."

Many notifications had arrived back to back to my vision earlier. This wasn't the time and place for checking out the system. Let's settle this situation out first.

Alex nodded, shaking her hand with a small smile. "Yeah, I am okay. Thanks, but you did most of the work. I just pointed out a few things."

Misty smirked. "Well, those 'few things' were enough to make Team Rocket run off with their tails between their legs."

"Yeah," Alex replied, though his mind still churned beneath the surface. He wasn't going to let her know the full weight of what had just happened. Not yet.

For now, it was enough that everything seemed stable again. But the deviation was there. He'd have to be ready for whatever changes came next.
