Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 Closing in

The morning after their escape from Michael Kent's estate, Dominic and Alyssa sat side by side at the small kitchen table in the safe house, steam curling from their untouched cups of coffee. They had barely slept, but exhaustion didn't dull the fire in their eyes. The documents they had recovered were more than just leverage they were a direct thread to the heart of Victor Graves' operation.

But the road ahead was treacherous.

As they gathered with Marcus, Eleanor, Laura, and Julian, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

"We have the evidence," Dominic said, spreading the decrypted documents across the table. "We know who's involved, how they've been operating, and now we have a direct link to Graves. But this is still a game of high stakes. Graves will try to cover his tracks before we can take him down."

Alyssa, always sharp, nodded. "We need to move carefully. If Graves catches wind of this before we go public, he'll bury everything and disappear."

Julian tapped a page from the file. "We can't just leak this to the media like we did with Bradford Holdings. Graves is a different kind of target. He has the resources to make people disappear. We need to make sure that once this goes out, it's irreversible."

Laura, the former FBI agent, crossed her arms. "We have to treat this like a criminal case. I can reach out to contacts in law enforcement, but we'll need airtight evidence and a coordinated effort. We can't just throw this into the public domain without a plan."

Eleanor, her expression troubled, finally spoke. "Graves isn't just another corrupt executive. He's ruthless, and he won't hesitate to eliminate threats. We have to assume he'll come after anyone involved in this."

Dominic took a slow breath, feeling the weight of their reality. "Then we strike first. We prepare, we gather everything we need, and we make sure Graves knows we're coming for him."

That afternoon, as Laura made discreet calls to her contacts, Dominic and Alyssa found themselves alone in the dimly lit safe house. The others were working in different rooms, finalizing security measures and planning contingencies.

Alyssa sat on the worn-out couch, reviewing the files again, but she could feel Dominic's gaze on her. She looked up to find him standing by the window, his expression unreadable as he stared out at the city beyond.

"Talk to me," she said softly.

He turned, leaning against the window frame, his features cast in shadow. "I don't like knowing that you're in danger because of me."

Alyssa closed the file, standing and moving toward him. "I'm here because I choose to be."

His jaw tightened. "That doesn't make it easier."

She reached up, brushing her fingers over the faint bruise on his cheek a reminder of the fight at Kent's estate. "Dominic, we're in this together. You don't get to carry all the weight alone."

His hand covered hers, holding it there. "I don't know what I'd do if something happened to you."

Something in his voice something raw, unguarded sent warmth through her chest. Alyssa had always known Dominic was a fighter, a strategist, a man who carried the world on his shoulders. But in this moment, he wasn't just Dominic Hayes, the powerful CEO. He was just a man, standing before her, vulnerable in a way he rarely allowed himself to be.

She stepped closer, closing the space between them. "Then don't push me away," she murmured.

His eyes searched hers, something unspoken passing between them. And then, as if there was no other choice, he kissed her.

It wasn't rushed, wasn't desperate it was something deeper. A silent vow, a moment stolen from the chaos that surrounded them. His hands framed her face as he kissed her again, slower this time, as if memorizing the feel of her.

When they finally broke apart, Alyssa rested her forehead against his. "Whatever happens next, I'm not going anywhere."

Dominic exhaled, a rare, small smile ghosting across his lips. "Good. Because I don't think I could do this without you."

The days passed in tense anticipation. They laid out their strategy, securing a meeting with federal agents who could move against Graves. But just when they thought they had control of the situation, Marcus called with an urgent warning.

"We've got a situation," Marcus said over the phone. "We've picked up chatter that Graves has put a hit out on you and Alyssa. Multiple sources are confirming it."

A chill ran down Dominic's spine. He had expected Graves to retaliate, but not this quickly.

Alyssa's face went pale. "He's moving faster than we thought."

Dominic clenched his fists. "Then we need to move faster."

Laura's expression was grim. "Graves will send professionals, and they won't hesitate to come at you directly. We need to be on full alert."

That night, despite the danger closing in, Dominic and Alyssa found solace in the quiet moments between them. They sat on the couch, a map of Graves' known properties spread before them, their hands brushing as they traced potential routes.

Alyssa exhaled, leaning her head against his shoulder. "We've been running for so long, fighting to stay ahead. Do you ever think about what comes after?"

Dominic hesitated before answering. "I used to think it didn't matter. That once I took Graves down, I'd just keep moving, find the next battle."

She tilted her head to look up at him. "And now?"

He turned his gaze toward her, his hand finding hers. "Now I think I want something more."

Her fingers tightened around his. "Then let's make sure we get there. Together."

Dominic lifted her hand to his lips, pressing a kiss against her knuckles. "Together."

They had one last battle ahead of them. But for the first time, Dominic wasn't just fighting for justice, he was fighting for a future.
