As the school bell's piercing ring echoes throughout the hallway, I groggily pull myself out of my drowsy state and sit up in my desk. Rubbing away the remnants of a strange dream from my bleary eyes, I reach for my notebook and prepare myself for the next class. Just then, Mrs. Clark struts into the classroom with her signature sharp heels tapping against the linoleum floor, leaving a trail of lingering perfume in her wake. She sets up the projector with precise movements as my classmates start to trickle in, their voices buzzing with anticipation.
The last to enter are Robin and her clique of followers, their loud laughter and boisterous chatter filling the room as they take their seats behind me. I immediately feel their eyes boring into the back of my head, waiting for an opportunity to pounce and make fun of me like they always do. A chill runs down my spine as I recall all the times they have made me a target for their teasing and ridicule.
With a smug grin plastered on her perfectly made-up face, Robin saunters past me and takes her seat. I know that means she has something planned for me today - something to make my day even more unbearable.
As Mrs. Clark begins her lesson on Trigonometry, I try to focus on taking notes but it's no use. My mind is consumed by thoughts of how long this day will feel with these bullies tormenting me every step of the way.
Mrs. Clark finishes her explanation and hands out individual assignment packets, filled with complex equations and challenging questions for us to work on independently. As I flip through the pages, trying to decipher what feels like hieroglyphics at this point, my mind starts to wander.
I find myself gazing out the window at the dull gray sky beyond, polluted and smoggy as ever. It's been like this for years now - the Earth ravaged by pollution and neglect. Rivers, lakes, and even the vast ocean are filled with trash and chemicals, while thick plumes of toxic gases and exhaust billow from countless factories that now dominate the landscape.
The only signs of life for miles around are the mutated crows that scavenge for scraps amidst the desolate wasteland. It's a far cry from the vibrant and diverse ecosystems I've read about in books and seen in pictures. How different things must have been before humanity's destructive ways took over. It's hard to imagine amidst these bleak times.
Lost in my thoughts, I barely register the sharp sting of something hitting the back of my head. Turning around, I see a crumpled paper ball rolling on the floor beside me. Glancing over at Robin, I catch her with a smug grin on her face. Letting out a sigh, I turn back to my packet but soon enough another paper ball hits me in the head. This continues for the rest of class - their childish antics never failing to get under my skin.
"Just ignore them, Bella," I murmur to myself, trying my best to tune out their whispers and giggles. But their cruel comments about my weight, acne, and unruly mop of red hair still manage to seep through my defenses. They used to hurt me deeply, but after enduring them for so long, I've grown numb to their insults.
As the final bell rings, signaling my escape from Robin's relentless torments, I let out a silent sigh of relief. My heart races with adrenaline as I snatch my bag and dart out of the classroom before she or her goons can catch me again. The hallways are a blur as I sprint through them, not even pausing to stop by my locker - which is always empty except for my outdated class schedule pinned inside - before bursting out of the school doors into the open air.
My breathing starts to slow down as I make a beeline for the bike racks where my trusty bicycle awaits. I hastily unlock the chain and don my helmet, eager to get away before Robin has a chance to catch up. Just as I start pedaling away, I catch a glimpse of her emerging from the front entrance of the school. Her perfectly styled hair and designer clothes stand in stark contrast to my own disheveled appearance. She doesn't notice me at first, too busy chatting with her minions and twirling her bright pink pencil case in one hand.
In that moment, I can't help but smirk at the irony - her cheerful stationery choice is a complete mismatch to her sour demeanor. But before I can revel in this small victory, one of her goons catches sight of me and points in my direction. Without hesitation, I pump my legs faster and disappear around the corner, leaving them behind. It may not be much, but for now, it's enough to give me a taste of freedom from their constant bullying.
As I pedal my bike down the familiar streets towards my grandparents' house, memories flood my mind like a tidal wave. They had taken me in as a baby, providing love and support that my young birth mother could not offer. They were the pillars of stability in my life, always making sure I was cared for and loved unconditionally.
A warm smile spreads across my face as I think about our cozy game nights, filled with laughter and delicious food cooked by my amazing grandma. As I turn onto the road that leads to the pier, I can already smell the tantalizing aromas drifting from their house. My stomach grumbles in anticipation, but before I can get lost in thoughts of dinner, I spot the familiar wooden pier
jutting out into the polluted water.
I park my bike at the entrance of the pier and walk out over the murky brown water, its polluted surface sloshing against the rickety wooden planks. The sun struggles to break through the thick layer of smog created by nearby factories, casting a hazy glow over everything. A pungent smell hangs in the air, a constant reminder of how much damage has been done to our environment.
I let out a heavy sigh as I gaze out at the once pristine sea, now tainted by man's destructive actions. The sun disappears behind dark grey clouds once more, casting a gloomy shadow over the polluted waters below. But despite it all, this is still my favorite spot in town. It's where I can escape from all the chaos and find peace amidst the pollution. And for that, I am grateful.
As I turned to head back to my bike, the sound of cruel laughter echoed behind me like a never-ending nightmare. My heart sank as I saw Robin and her gang of friends standing there, their mocking faces sending chills down my spine. "Well, well, well. Look who it is," Robin sneered with malice dripping from every word. I could feel my stomach twist in dread as she wrapped her arm around my shoulder, taunting me with her sharp nails digging into my skin. "I just wanted to have a little chat with my old pal Bella," she hissed, pulling me towards the edge of the pier.
My mind raced with fear as I realized what was about to happen. I tried to break free from her grasp, but her grip was like steel. "What do you want from me, Robin?" I pleaded, my voice trembling with terror.
Her icy eyes met mine with a smug smile. "I saw you talking to Christian," she spat out his name like venom. "You know how much I hate it when people talk to him, especially you."
Before I could even process her words, she shoved me off the end of the pier with a forceful push. The cold water engulfed me in an instant, stealing my breath and sending me into a state of panic. As I struggled to surface for air, all I could hear was Robin's cruel laughter echoing above me like a haunting lullaby. My body instinctively fought against the murky depths, but without knowing how to swim and with the thick water filled with trash impeding my movements, I soon began to tire.
But still, the thought of giving up never crossed my mind. With every fiber of my being, I continued to fight, determined not to let Robin win. But as time passed and my energy drained, my movements became more sluggish and less effective. My head went under the water, and as I struggled to stay afloat, the last thing I heard was Robin's cruel laugh and the snickers of her heartless friends.
As the water enveloped me completely, I felt myself sinking deeper and deeper into an abyss that seemed to have no end. My vision blurred and disappeared, followed by the loss of sensation in my body. Panic set in as I fought to hold my breath, but eventually, my body could no longer resist the urge to gasp for air. The water rushed into my lungs, causing a searing pain that spread through my entire being as I continued to sink. And yet, even in the midst of this physical agony, the emotional anguish weighed heavier on my heart knowing that there was no one coming to save me. This was truly the end.
But just when I thought all hope was lost, something miraculous happened. As I sank further into the dark depths of the water, my body suddenly became engulfed in a blinding light. Whispers surrounded me like a gentle breeze, beckoning me towards the unknown. They were like soft melodies, filling me with bittersweet memories of life as I floated in this surreal light, feeling weightless and at peace.
