Chapter 120 - Chapter 120: Scouting the Remnants

The badlands stretched before them, a vast and desolate wasteland of jagged rocks, sharp ridges, and charred earth. The sun hung low on the horizon, casting long shadows that danced across the uneven terrain. The eastern badlands were infamous for their inhospitable environment and the unsavory characters who used its natural defenses to evade detection. It was the perfect hiding spot for Syndicate loyalists, remnants clinging to their cause in defiance of the coalition's efforts to dismantle their operations.

Ethan adjusted his helmet, the visor scanning the horizon for movement as he led his small team deeper into the badlands. The group moved silently, their hover truck parked a safe distance behind them to avoid detection. Zyrix Korran, the D-Rank sniper, walked just behind Ethan, his long rifle slung across his back, his sharp eyes scanning the rocky formations for threats.

Rounding out the team were Rourke and Malek, two elite E-Rank mercenaries who had earned Ethan's trust over the past months. Rourke's bulky frame and heavy plasma repeater made him an imposing figure, while Malek's lean build and quick fingers were perfect for infiltration and tech work. The group advanced cautiously, the weight of their mission pressing on them.

The trek through the badlands was grueling. The rocky ground made every step treacherous, while the oppressive heat added to the strain. Ethan glanced at his team, ensuring they were holding up.

"Iris, run another scan," Ethan muttered.

"Scanning," his AI replied, her calm tone cutting through the silence. Ethan's visor flickered with data as Iris analyzed the area.

"Nothing unusual ahead," Iris reported, "but there are faint energy signatures coming from the direction of the cavern we detected earlier."

Ethan nodded, motioning for the team to pick up the pace.

The natural cavern came into view after another hour of trekking. It was partially hidden by a jagged ridge, its entrance shrouded in shadow. Ethan crouched, raising a fist to signal the team to halt.

The group knelt behind a cluster of boulders, peering at the entrance. Syndicate soldiers patrolled the perimeter, their alloy-enhanced armor gleaming faintly even in the low light. The entrance was fortified with makeshift barricades, and an automated turret hummed ominously, sweeping the area with its sensor array.

"Looks like they've turned this place into a mini-fortress," Zyrix observed, his voice low.

"We'll need to take out that turret before we can get close," Ethan said, glancing at Malek.

Malek grinned. "Give me a minute to hack into their surveillance systems. I'll disable the turret and feed us intel on their patrol patterns."

The team set up a perimeter as Malek connected to his portable console, his fingers dancing across the keys. Within moments, the cavern's internal layout appeared on their visors, a glowing blueprint marking the positions of enemy troops and key defenses.

"They've got at least two dozen soldiers inside," Malek reported. "Patrol patterns are tight, but there's a blind spot near the southern entrance. If we can slip in through there, we'll have the advantage."

"Good work," Ethan said. "Zyrix, you'll cover us from here. Take out anyone who spots us."

Zyrix nodded, settling into position with his rifle.

The infiltration began smoothly. Ethan led Rourke and Malek toward the southern entrance, moving silently across the rocky terrain. They slipped past the first patrol, their movements synchronized and deliberate.

As they approached the cavern, the turret abruptly swiveled toward them, its sensors flaring. Malek cursed under his breath.

"They've switched to an independent power source!" he hissed, scrambling to disable it manually.

The turret's barrel began to glow, but before it could fire, a sharp crack echoed through the air. The turret sparked and went still, a clean hole punched through its core. Ethan glanced back to see Zyrix giving a subtle thumbs-up from his vantage point.

The momentary alarm, however, had alerted the Syndicate forces inside. A shrill alarm echoed through the cavern, and soldiers began pouring out.

"Brace yourselves!" Ethan shouted, drawing his plasma dagger as the first wave of enemies charged.

The Fight Intensifies

The skirmish erupted into chaos. Syndicate soldiers armed with alloy-enhanced rifles and energy shields emerged, their formation tight and disciplined.

Ethan ducked under a barrage of plasma fire, his dagger humming as he deflected a shot and closed the gap with one of the soldiers. A swift slash disabled the enemy's shield, and a second strike dropped them.

Nearby, Rourke's plasma repeater roared to life, the heavy weapon cutting through enemy ranks with devastating efficiency.

"Don't let them push us back!" Rourke bellowed, his voice carrying over the cacophony.

Malek, armed with a compact laser pistol, darted between cover, his sharp eyes scanning for weak points in the enemy's defenses.

From his perch, Zyrix picked off Syndicate soldiers with unerring precision. Each shot was a calculated kill, thinning the enemy ranks and giving Ethan's team breathing room.

As the battle raged, Ethan found himself face-to-face with a heavily armored Syndicate enforcer. The soldier stood atop a massive armored desert beast, its claws raking the ground as it snarled.

The enforcer, wielding an alloy-enhanced axe, swung with brutal force. Ethan narrowly dodged the blow, the weapon carving a deep gouge into the rocky ground.

Drawing on his latent psychic powers, Ethan moved with supernatural speed, his plasma dagger carving through the enforcer's armor. The beast lunged at him, its jaws snapping, but Ethan pivoted, using its momentum against it. A final thrust of his dagger disabled the beast, and the enforcer fell soon after.

With the outpost secured, the team began searching for intel. Malek hacked into the Syndicate's mainframe, retrieving encrypted files.

"This is big," Malek said, his voice tinged with excitement. "These files mention Vela Drasik. Looks like she's been consolidating her forces in the central highlands."

Ethan's expression hardened. "Good work. Let's get this data back to the coalition. We need to act on this quickly."

The team retreated as Zyrix provided overwatch, ensuring they weren't pursued. As they reached the safety of their hover truck, Ethan felt a flicker of hope.

"Another piece of the puzzle," he muttered. "We're getting closer."
