Chapter 48 - Sometimes, just accept that you're not special

Felix's rank steadily rose.

At the beginning of the camp, he was at the lowest tier, but he slowly ascended from irrelevance to…

But in this rise, although his eyes did not die, the psyche from three months back, did.

Even after dealing with these siblings, it was truly unbelievable to him as other students in the top hundred, stood against him.

As he approached the top sixty, the top fifty-four to be precise, more and more students ganged up on him.

It almost felt as if the whole camp was against him.

It really didn't make sense.

And still…

"I-It's the…" Coughing up a mouthful of blood, Felix swallowed it back down, "L-last night."

Already, three months passed.

Unofficially, the camp had already ended.

It was already minutes to eleven, and soon, the curfew would see to it that there were no students moving about.

But Felix was not heading to his dorm room.

His footsteps were chaotic as he stumbled his way across military zone #91.

Some workers, guards, or even instructors, would glance at him and indifferently turn away.

He was another member of this world, but he was not a member of their world.

Felix had yet to awaken.

It was the last night, and he had yet to even step onto the enlightening platform.

This was normal.

You know, the world was unfair.

At times, one should simply accept that they've been defeated.

As much as you wished to believe that you're special, sometimes, you've just got to accept that you aren't.

All you'd be doing if you tried fighting against fate's decree, is taking the brush of destiny and writing down your own demise.

He, Felix, had already used up all his luck to defy fate once.

On the final night, Felix was ganged up by several higher-ranked individuals, but he still escaped from that fight on his two legs.

More than that, he left them all sprawled on the ground, unconscious.

No...

He did not know if they were unconscious.

There might just be one or two who had died from his onslaught.

Why would he do something like this?

Why?

It was the final night for fuck's sake.

Not one day!

Not a single day in the past ninety, did he get a break.

What was frustration?

What was anger, rage, and wrath?

They all meant the same thing...

What was hate, loathing, and resentment?

They all meant the same thing, and yet, why did it feel as if they could describe separate fragments of his emotions?

What was these emotions and sensations?

It was what made up Felix's spirit.

Felix couldn't hold it in.

For a long time now, he couldn't hold it in.

This was the first time he had killed another human, or possibly humans, but so fucking what?

This world, this society, this camp of ten thousand…

There were humans, but no humanity.

If this was the case, only the deaf, dumb, and blind would remain constricted and limited by ideals instilled in them by others who did not experience what he, Felix, had experienced.

"St. Hope high school's Felix Arcola. Rank 61-!"

A robotic sounding voice resounded throughout the bottommost floor of the enlightenment tower.

Hearing his ranking, one of the guards stationed just outside, was about to step in and 'escort' Felix out, but the system's voice resounded once more...

"St. Hope high school's Felix Arcola, rank 43."

The guard paused for a while, turning to one of the white-coated individuals.

Said individual just happened to be Aren.

He looked at Felix and smiled in amusement, making his way over.

"I'd like to hear your story…" He said, chuckling.

After all, besides his ranking's abrupt alteration, Felix walked into the enlightenment tower drowned in blood.

His own blood, and the blood of others.

There were so many fine and large injuries across his body that he seemed to be an inch away from death, it was a wonder how he was still conscious.

"But Mr. Felix, as you can see, there's no reason for you to be here."

Aren pointed at the many enlightening platforms, atop them all, a student could be seen sitting cross-legged, screaming and bellowing out in pain.

It was the last night.

More than that, it was the last few minutes before the curfew.

This was their last chance.

"And still, if there was a space, look at yourself." Aren then pointed at him.

Felix watched his body.

He stared at his palms, then his arms.

Glancing at his shoulders, then his chest, abdomen, he twisted his waist to see his back...

All around, wherever he looked there were injuries oozing blood.

To go onto the enlightening platform like this, it was basically asking for death.

But so, what?

His right foot stepped forward.

What happened thereafter, was beyond the guard's jurisdiction.

Felix, ranked 43rd, was allowed to enter the enlightenment tower.

Felix, ranked 43rd, did not assault any of the staff members either, so the guard could not interfere with him.

Felix appeared before a stone platform and stepped onto the stairs.

There was a silver-haired girl screaming in pain, not taking him on whatsoever.

But right as he stood onto the platform, her screams came to an abrupt halt.

Though, it was not because she had suddenly sensed him...

Felix tightly gripped her neck and lifted her into the air before flinging the slender silver-haired beauty out of the platform.

"H-Hey! Hey, you can't do that!" Aren shouted whilst running towards the platform, but Felix didn't take him on.

"T-This is madness." Aren turned towards the white-coated individual standing before a monitor and ordered, "Shut it down, now!"

It was already too late for Felix.

What he was doing right now went beyond desperation and boarded utter madness.

"You... You do that yeah, and you'll fucking see!" Felix growled.

His bloodshot eyes were crazed as he stared at the white-coated individual whilst taking in a deep breath and calming his heart.

He stared open eyed towards this individual, killing intent leaking out of these eyes, whilst simultaneously, his mind calmed as his spirit invited the stellar cosmic energies controlled by the enlightening platform.

"What the fuck are you doing!" Seeing the white-coated individual frozen in fear, Aren exclaimed and rushed towards the monitor.

The enlightening platform was already active for several minutes now.

It was already closing in on the fifteen minutes.

This was a testament to the silver-haired girl. Seemingly, she was very close to awakening, and maybe, she'd have even awakened this night.

More importantly, now that Felix suddenly appeared atop the enlightening platform several minutes into its activation, the amount of stellar cosmic energies that it was generating was incomparable to when the mechanism was just activated.

This high quantity of stellar cosmic energies would forcefully descend onto his spirit in an abrupt manner.

More than just a shock, it was an electrocution that all but guaranteed death.

This guarantee of death was for fully healed individuals.

As for the current Felix, he had already opened the metaphysical door of death and was washed over by the cold, heavy, aura of death.

This aura had encompassed his existential self, drawing him into the world beyond.

The state of his body was dangerous even for a "high human", and in this state, he desired to accept this electrocution?

Aren could not allow it, and yet, he was too slow.

Or more like, Felix could calm his mind too unnaturally quick.

'If I die, so be it.'

Felix grinned.

He was at peace.

If he died, he died.

If he lived, on this night, he would go on a killing spree.

By stepping onto the enlightening platform while it had been active for so long, if he survived, it would mean he had successfully "jumpstarted" his spirit, opening his mind's eye and becoming a stellar fighter.

On this night, he would either died, or would test just how much could the camp's laws bend.

Before Aren's eyes, he watched as Felix, for the first time, welcomed stellar cosmic energy into his being.

Indeed, more than his current state or the fact that he had stepped onto the platform several minutes after its activation, it was the culmination of all these factors on top of the most glaring one: he had never experienced the enlightening platform before.

What happened thereafter was very much expected.

Aren shook his head as the light of life faded from Felix's eyes.

It wasn't surprising in the least as Felix listlessly slumped to the ground, dead.
