Chapter 39 - Whispers in the shadows

The following day, Thalos found himself in the grand hall of Castellan Keep, where the immortals often gathered. The stone walls echoed with laughter and conversation, a stark contrast to the turmoil that raged within him. He hadn't yet shared the bizarre encounter with the creature—Vaelor—with the others. Something deep within him urged caution, a whisper that suggested the truth was best kept secret for now.

As he entered the hall, he noticed Aurelia Pyrrhos, her fiery hair glowing in the sunlight streaming through the windows, animatedly discussing their latest ventures with Lucius Castellan and Nyssa Drakos.

"Thalos!" Aurelia called, her voice cutting through the din. "Come join us! We were just debating which territory we should investigate next."

Thalos approached the group, a faint smile tugging at his lips despite the turmoil in his mind. "What's the current topic of debate?"

Lucius, ever the strategist, leaned back in his chair, fingers steepled. "There have been reports of strange occurrences in the nearby villages—disappearances, livestock found drained of life. Some say it's the work of a beast, while others believe it's a dark sorcerer. We were thinking it might be worth checking out."

"Sounds like you're in for an adventure," Thalos said, trying to mask the weight pressing on his chest.

"But it could also be a trap," Nyssa interjected, her sharp eyes glinting with concern. "Whatever is behind these disappearances has been unusually clever, staying hidden while causing chaos. We need to tread carefully."

"Or we could use the chaos to our advantage," Aurelia suggested, her tone playful but serious beneath the surface. "Imagine the stories we could tell! 'The immortals vanquished a great beast'—it would send a message to those who would dare cross us."

Thalos nodded, but his thoughts drifted back to Vaelor, the sudden transformation, the terrifying power it possessed. He didn't want to involve his companions in a world he had barely begun to understand.

"Let's not jump to conclusions," Thalos said, injecting a note of caution into the discussion. "We should gather more information before making any decisions."

As they discussed their plans, Thalos caught a glimpse of movement from the corner of his eye. Vaelor, in its cute form, had followed him into the keep, weaving through the legs of the immortals, unaware of the tension surrounding the table. It seemed completely at ease, its small body gliding across the stone floor as it approached Aurelia.

"Look! A little friend!" Aurelia exclaimed, bending down to meet the creature's gaze. Vaelor chirped, its large eyes reflecting the light as it nuzzled against her hand. "Where did you find this cutie, Thalos?"

"I—uh, it just appeared by the forest," Thalos replied, caught off guard by the ease with which Vaelor had slipped into the room. "I thought it was lost, so I brought it along."

"That's quite the find! We could use a good luck charm on our upcoming adventure," Aurelia laughed, her spirits lifting.

Nyssa's gaze narrowed slightly, her instincts always honed for deception. "You're sure it's safe? Creatures can be tricky, especially in these woods."

Thalos held his breath, trying to gauge their reactions. "It seems harmless enough. Just a small creature, nothing to worry about."

"Still, we should keep an eye on it," Nyssa said, crossing her arms.

Lucius chuckled, breaking the tension. "Let's not jump to conclusions. I've heard of stranger things in these lands, including that charming little troublemaker," he gestured toward Vaelor.

As they settled back into their discussion, Thalos felt a strange sense of relief wash over him. Vaelor was getting along well, weaving between their feet, drawing laughter and smiles from his companions. But in the back of his mind, a nagging doubt persisted.

The day wore on, the group discussing various strategies and gathering supplies for their journey. Vaelor remained an adorable distraction, playing with loose threads from their cloaks and darting around the hall, blissfully unaware of the danger lurking just beneath the surface of their plans.

Later, as the sun dipped lower in the sky, the conversation turned to the ominous events in the nearby villages. The atmosphere shifted; laughter faded, replaced by murmurs of concern and dark speculation.

"What if it's something ancient?" Aurelia mused, her brow furrowing. "Legends speak of beasts that drain life from the land. Perhaps they have awakened."

Nyssa nodded in agreement. "It would explain the disappearances. But why now? Why would these creatures rise after so long?"

As they discussed, Vaelor, still the picture of innocence, suddenly darted to the far corner of the hall, its attention caught by something in the shadows. Thalos felt a jolt of anxiety ripple through him.

"Stay close," he said quietly, as the creature pressed its snout into a crack between two stones.

"What's it doing?" Aurelia asked, her curiosity piqued.

Thalos watched, tension building. "I'm not sure. It's probably just exploring."

But even as he said it, he couldn't shake the feeling that the creature was drawn to something deeper, something hidden in the darkness.

"Maybe it senses something we can't," Lucius suggested, leaning forward with interest. "Animals often have a sixth sense for danger."

Suddenly, Vaelor let out a soft, high-pitched chirp, causing everyone to turn. It looked back at them, its eyes wide and shimmering, before slipping further into the shadows.

"Vaelor, come back!" Thalos called, his heart racing.

The small creature paused at the threshold of darkness, then turned its head, looking back at him with an expression that seemed almost knowing, as if it understood something he did not.

A heavy silence fell over the group, all eyes fixated on the strange little creature. Thalos felt the weight of their gazes, a mix of curiosity and suspicion.

"What if it's leading us to whatever is causing the disturbances?" Nyssa asked, her tone shifting from concern to intrigue.

Thalos hesitated, his mind racing. "I wouldn't jump to conclusions just yet. It could be a coincidence, just an animal being curious."

"Curiosity can often lead to danger," Aurelia cautioned, her voice steady but laced with uncertainty.

"Let it be," Lucius said, waving a hand dismissively. "It's just a little creature, after all. We'll keep our wits about us. We need to focus on the task at hand."

"Fine," Thalos conceded, though unease coiled in his stomach. "But let's not forget that we don't fully understand what we're dealing with yet."

As they prepared to leave for the villages, Vaelor returned to Thalos's side, nuzzling against him as if sensing the tension that hung thick in the air. For a brief moment, Thalos felt comforted by its presence, but the darkness in his mind lingered, a reminder of the power hidden beneath that innocent exterior.

As they stepped out into the twilight, the air felt charged, crackling with an energy that hinted at both danger and possibility. The path ahead was uncertain, fraught with shadows that danced just beyond the edge of their vision.

Thalos glanced down at Vaelor, who looked back up at him with innocent eyes. But beneath that facade, he sensed a deeper truth—a reminder that darkness could manifest in the most unexpected forms.

"Let's stay alert," he whispered, unsure whether he was addressing his companions or the creature at his side.

Unbeknownst to him, the shadows thickened, curling around them like a living entity, watching and waiting, biding its time.
