Chereads / Second Take / Chapter 29 - A New Stage

Chapter 29 - A New Stage

It had been weeks since the finale of their show aired, and Beacon Studios was still buzzing with excitement. The second season had officially been greenlit, and for the first time in a long while, there was a feeling of forward momentum. The small, often overlooked studio was no longer just a background player in the entertainment industry—they had made enough noise to be noticed. But now came the hard part: sustaining that success.

Ethan was sitting in the newly refurbished production office, staring at the corkboard filled with ideas for the second season. Liam sat beside him, furiously scribbling notes as they worked through the rough outline for the upcoming episodes. The board was cluttered with character arcs, dramatic twists, and potential conflicts. It was a chaotic mess of creativity, but that's how Ethan liked it. The more they pushed themselves, the better the result.

"So, this is where we introduce the new character," Liam said, pointing to a sticky note at the top of the board. "This needs to hit hard. We're bringing in someone from the outside—maybe a rival to Luke's character. It'll give us the tension we need to kick off the season."

Ethan nodded, leaning back in his chair. "Yeah, but we need the right actor for it. This role is pivotal, and if we get it wrong, the whole season could fall flat."

Liam paused, thinking it over. "We've always worked with D and F-tier actors. I get the feeling we need to aim higher this time. If we want to make a splash, we need someone with more presence. Someone with a C or B-tier ranking."

Ethan's mind immediately began to race. Beacon Studios had always played it safe with its casting. They'd hired reliable but lesser-known actors, the kind who were looking for a break but weren't big enough to bring in a massive audience. Now, with their small boost in credibility, maybe they could reach a bit higher.

"I'm with you on that," Ethan said, crossing his arms as he stared at the board. "But convincing a C or B-tier actor to join this project isn't going to be easy. We're still seen as a small studio."

Liam set his notebook down and looked at Ethan. "Maybe. But we've got something those bigger studios don't—a chance to do something different. A chance to really build a character from the ground up, without the pressure of a massive network breathing down their necks. That's got to count for something, right?"

Ethan sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. "I hope so. We've got to start making calls. We're going to need someone who believes in this project as much as we do."

A few days later, Ethan found himself at a casting event in downtown LA, a swanky affair meant to showcase some of the industry's up-and-coming talent. It was the first time he had been invited to something like this. Normally, these kinds of events were reserved for higher-tier industry professionals—people with a reputation, people who mattered.

He didn't feel like he belonged.

As he stepped inside, the hum of conversation hit him like a wave. The room was filled with actors, directors, producers, and agents, all of them mingling under the dim, stylish lighting. The polished marble floors and floor-to-ceiling windows screamed wealth and success, a stark contrast to the scrappy, low-budget productions Ethan had grown accustomed to at Beacon.

Liam had been too swamped with script revisions to attend, so Ethan was on his own. He felt out of place, an imposter in a world where everyone else seemed to know the rules of the game better than he did.

He wandered through the room, listening in on conversations, catching snippets of industry gossip. Every now and then, he recognized a face—a B-tier actor from a popular drama, a C-tier director who had made waves with an indie film. These were the people Ethan needed to be rubbing elbows with, but it felt like there was an invisible wall between them.

Just as he was about to grab a drink and find a quiet corner, a familiar voice called out his name.

"Ethan?"

He turned to see Rachel, one of the producers he had worked with briefly at Beacon. She was well-connected, someone who always seemed to know the right people at the right time.

"Rachel," Ethan said, smiling. "I didn't expect to see you here."

She laughed, flipping her blonde hair over her shoulder. "Oh, please. You're not the only one trying to rise through the ranks. These events are goldmines if you know how to navigate them."

Ethan chuckled, though the anxiety still gnawed at him. "I'm trying to figure out how to do just that."

Rachel's expression softened, sensing his unease. "You're not the only one who's felt out of place here. These people thrive on appearances, but underneath it all, they're just like us. Don't overthink it."

Ethan nodded, grateful for her words, though he wasn't entirely convinced. "I'm here to scout for the second season. We're looking for someone who can really shake things up."

Rachel raised an eyebrow. "Stepping up the game, huh? Well, I'll keep my ears open for you. There are a few names floating around tonight who might fit the bill."

As they chatted, Ethan began to relax slightly. Rachel introduced him to a few other industry insiders, and soon he found himself in a conversation with Eric Ross, a B-tier actor who had been making waves in the indie film circuit. Eric was sharp, charismatic, and had the kind of presence that could command a room. He was exactly the kind of talent Ethan had been hoping to meet.

"So, Beacon Studios, huh?" Eric said, his tone curious. "I've heard about your show. Gotta say, I didn't expect much, but people are talking. It's got potential."

Ethan smiled, feeling a flicker of pride. "We're trying to do something different. There's a lot of talent out there that gets overlooked, and we're trying to tap into that."

Eric nodded, his expression thoughtful. "I like that. It's refreshing to hear someone talk about real talent and not just marketability. What are you looking for in your second season?"

"We need someone who can bring tension to the story," Ethan explained. "A rival for the main character, someone who can push him to his limits. It's a complex role, and we want to dig deep into what motivates him."

Eric leaned back, considering it. "Sounds interesting. I've been looking for a project that lets me stretch a bit, something that's not just another cookie-cutter role. I'm tired of playing it safe."

Ethan's heart raced. This was it. "I think you'd be a great fit. If you're interested, we can send over the script and talk more."

Eric flashed a grin. "Yeah, let's do that. I'm curious to see where this goes."

As they exchanged contact information, Ethan felt a surge of excitement. This was exactly what they needed—a higher-ranked actor who could not only elevate the show but also bring in a new level of visibility. It was a step in the right direction.

The next morning, Ethan met with Liam back at the studio, a newfound energy buzzing through him. He explained everything about the event, the connections he'd made, and his conversation with Eric Ross.

"This could be it, Liam," Ethan said, pacing the room. "If we can bring in someone like Eric, it'll change everything. It's the first step toward getting Beacon—and us—noticed on a larger scale."

Liam leaned back in his chair, a small smile forming. "It sounds like we're actually starting to break through. We've come a long way from those early days."

Ethan nodded, his mind racing with possibilities. "We're not there yet, but we're close. I can feel it."

As they continued planning the second season, the shift in the studio's atmosphere became more apparent. People were paying attention now. Beacon Studios, once a small, struggling production company, was starting to rise. But with that rise came new challenges—internal politics, budget negotiations, and the constant pressure to keep pushing boundaries.

The studio was at a crossroads. Some wanted to keep playing it safe, sticking to the formula that had worked for them in the past. But Ethan and his team were determined to keep innovating, to keep pushing forward.

And as Ethan sat in the production office, staring at the notes scattered across the table, he knew one thing for certain: this was just the beginning of a much larger journey. He wasn't just trying to create a successful show anymore—he was trying to build a career, a legacy.

He was ready to climb. And no matter how long it took, he was going to rise through the ranks.
