The Soulway.
The Soulway is a vortex of extradimensional power that brings humans from the real world to Infernis.
What prompts the power to bring those unfortunate enough to this new world? Nobody knows the answer. The thing is, many of those native to Infernis believe the Soulway to be random, a force of Nature that cannot be stopped. While directly, the Soulway does not bring any physical or magical danger to both worlds, it can be the cause of several disasters.
If a Traversed is imbued with a Calamity, they have the potential to rampage out, losing control of their unwanted power and cause ruin and destruction in whatever path they take. When fresh out of the Soulway, the Cursed One only rampages out for a short time, ranging from seconds to minutes. After that, they are burnt out and their body and Calamity are in a cool-down period.
If they are left to their devices, without interference, their body eventually recuperates and the Cursed One is left susceptible to their Calamity. Since they are newly transported Traversed, they have no clue of what happened to them, allowing their power to take over and they could soon rampage out again.
Cursed Ones that aren't immediately sealed eventually become hunted down by the Natives or even other Traversed. Some could even be captured and enlisted by the Legions of Hell to act as agents of destruction for the Unholy Crusades.
If not them, it is the Chaos Demons that slaughter the Cursed Ones, powerful demonic entities that even the Legions do not mettle with.
A Traversed is normally more attuned to the Ether of the world, obtaining prodigal talent when it comes to Sorcery. Traversed who are granted a Grace are even more powerful than usual. Those who are blessed by either Sorcery or Grace eventually become famous and powerful Heroes in Infernis. But of course, there are mortals native to Infernis that have reached levels beyond the Traversed.
Cursed Ones have a much more negative reputation, but that is because they cannot help but be susceptible to such unstable powers. It wasn't until the 64 Seals of Infernis were created that Cursed Ones were too risky to try to control.
The Seals were developed and eventually "loaned" to an elusive group of Witches called the Occult Sisters. They attack the Calamity itself and seal it down within the body and Ether of the Cursed One, only allowing a small fraction of its power to leak out. While originally meant to imprison fresh Cursed Ones, The Order allowed the usage of the 64 Seals to help a Cursed One regulate and control the power of their Calamity, eventually undoing Seals while carefully monitored.
The small power leaked from the seals allows the Cursed One to use Sorcery granted by the Calamity and eventually, the First Seal will be undone, granting them the ability to access the Calamity. On Lucian's case, he'll be able to harness the power of the Dragon Calamity, a rare and powerful Calamity that'll theoretically allow him to do anything a Dragon God could do.
What is a Dragon God? The Pinnacle of the Dragons, is a rare and nearly extinct entity race that harnesses incredible god-like powers. It is said that the first Dragon God, Primordius, granted Infernis with Magic and the Elves, Dwarves, and Fey were eventually born from this.
Some even state that Primordius allowed the essence of the Dragons to be turned into Calamities and cast the first Calamity into the Soulway as a way to resurrect his dying race.
There are many Calamities that grant their user incredible power. If wielded right, they become the pinnacle of magic and power.
There is nothing that could be done by Cursed Ones. Once granted their Calamities, they cannot remove them, as doing so will take their lives.
All they could do is to be what they are and live with it.

Infernis is a world of magic that contains a few continents, the main one is called Terra, a supercontinent that houses five Kingdoms and a single dominant Empire. Terra has a very diverse geography, with winter regions, desert regions, and dense forest regions. Many of rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water reside in Terra which in turn calls for a very diverse ecosystem, whether it be natural or magical.
Terra is considered to be the origin of Infernis's humanity and the Ether in the continent is incredibly dense.
There is another continent next to Terra, called Aqua, a portion of it is submerged underwater and the main part of it is controlled by the Imperium, the largest dynasty of Humanity that resides in Terra.
The Imperium is, without a doubt, the strongest of the Mortal Races' factions, containing the most powerful and potent military power. It is said that they can conquer the rest of Terra but they don't see the value in them, leaving the other Kingdoms, which prompted them to be called the Free Kingdoms.
The Imperium is in a neutral relationship with The Order, a large organization of Sorcerers that are solely focused on the neutralization of Demonic Activities in Terra. While The Order wishes to be in a permanent alliance with The Imperium, The Imperium is indifferent to them. They do not need The Order while The Order does need them, their power, their magic, and their resources.
The Order is divided by the main branch, controlled by diplomats and political leaders that deal with the Free Kingdoms and The Imperium. It has Five separate Sects. These Sects are the main offensive and defensive forces that combat the Demonic Legions, eradicating any threat to Terra.
Each Sect is led by an Arch-Magus who has several Paladin Knights under their command. The Sect has armies that range from 200-1,000 strong. And while they are few compared to the might of the Free Kingdoms and The Imperium, it is their magical capabilities that put them on even footing.
The Darklight Sect is the one that Lucian happens to be held captive by. One of its Paladin Knights, Lunaris, happens to be a Graced, a mortal granted a Grace, a powerful magical attribute that grants her immense power.
Despite her demeanor towards the Cursed One under her captivity, Lady Lunaris is a revered Hero and many of the Bull Kingdom look up to her. She is benevolent and kind-hearted, despite what Lucian thinks of her.
She is among the many talented in The Order that can contain and condition a Cursed One to their cause.
Their cause? The Unholy Crusades.
The Demonic Legions have mobilized through their hellgates and are moving in to attack Terra in an attempt to dominate Humanity and other Mortal Races. This was an effort that had been going on for centuries and as of late, after a certain incident, the Hellgates have opened.
Valkren, one of the Six Demon Lords, has sent his generals through and The Order is on high alert. Many believe that Valkren has a Chaos Demon God on his side and many Cursed Ones, which prompted the Order to rally as many Traversed and Cursed Ones to their side.
And this is where Lucian comes in. By some miracle, they came across the most potent of the Calamities; The Dragon Calamity.
Primordius is considered to be the Originator God and he is believed to be the reason for the Dragon Calamity's existance. A Dragon Calamity has not seen in thousands of years so this is a huge opportunity for The Order.
If Lucian is able to control his power and is convinced to fight for them, The Order might have a chance of winning.
If Valkren can march his armies through and personally appear in Infernis, there will be nothing but ruin worse than a Rampaging Cursed One.
So Lucian has no choice but to be what he is.
The Dragon God.
