Chapter 8 - A Fierce Friendly-1

The sun peeked through the clouds as Niyog laced up his cleats, the scent of freshly cut grass filling the air. Today was Saturday, the day of the friendly match against Eizar U17 Club. Excitement bubbled within him, but so did an unsettling wave of nerves. Every stitch and thread of his jersey felt heavier with the weight of anticipation.

Kerala Kings and Eizar took their positions, ready to clash in a friendly match. A small group of spectators, mostly parents and family members of the players, Sitting in the seats of the stadium, cheering for their sons and brothers. Among the players, Deeraj of the Kerala Kings spotted some familiar faces from Eizar and waved enthusiastically, a wide grin spreading across his face. The bond of friendship was evident in his gesture, reminiscent of the days when they shared the same jersey.

Xavier Pablo executed the kickoff with a calm assurance, laying the groundwork for Eizar's strategy from the outset. He didn't charge forward with the ball, opting instead for a more strategic approach. By passing to Juan Santiago, he positioned the playmaker to weave through the defense. As Juan Santiago, the agile centre midfielder received the ball, he immediately scanned the pitch, ready to exploit the spaces created by the Kerala Kings' more expansive formation.

With Eizar set in their 4-1-3-2 formation, the players moved fluidly, creating triangles and passing options. Meanwhile, the opposing team, entrenched in their 4-3-3, sought to maintain their shape while looking for opportunities to strike on the counter.

Ishan, the determined center forward of the Kerala Kings, was already sizing up the situation. Recognizing the threat Juan posed, he surged forward, intent on pressuring the midfield maestro for possession. However, Juan remained unfazed, a calm presence amidst the unfolding chaos, as he threaded a perfectly timed pass to Diego Nicolás, the right midfielder, who was poised to exploit the wing with his speed.

With the ball at his feet, Diego exploded into motion, making a beeline down the sideline, igniting the crowd with his every stride. It seemed a promising play was in the making, until Amir, the ever-vigilant left forward for Kerala Kings, darted toward him like a shadow, determined to snatch the ball away. Following closely behind, Niyog positioned himself as a reliable support, attempting to close down Diego's avenue of escape in a tactical display that showcased their team spirit.

Despite the mounting pressure, Diego remained composed, quickly assessing his options. With Amir closing in, he executed a brilliant stepover, pivoting to his right in a final bid to evade capture. Yet, in a twist of fate, Amir unpredictably halted his advance, managing to intercept Diego's dribble at the critical moment. The dynamic shifted rapidly as Amir seized the opportunity to initiate a counterattack.

In a flash, Amir sent a precise one-touch pass to Niyog V before the ball could escape their grasp and roll out for a throw-in. The synergy between the two players was strong, demonstrating the unyielding teamwork that characterized the Kerala Kings. As Niyog prepared to receive the ball, the tension in the air thickened; the battle for possession was far from over.

Leon Hernandez, the right back of Eizar, was not to be overlooked. He charged towards the ball, his instincts guiding him as he aimed to thwart Niyog's impending play.

Niyog, aware of Leon's approach, kept his eyes peeled for opportunities, he acted with precision. In an impressive show of teamwork, he quickly executed pass back to Amir, who had instinctively moved into a prime position to further the attack. Their seamless transition showcased the chemistry forged on and off the field, as if they were two pieces of a puzzle falling into place.

The energy was electric, and the crowd erupted in cheers, fully engaged in the unfolding drama.

Amir had the ball at his feet. As he scanned the field, he felt the presence of Diego looming behind him, applying pressure with every quickening step. In the distance, Ishan, who had been waiting patiently inside the penalty box, suddenly made a bold decision to move out toward Amir, clearly signaling for a pass. The tension rose as the defenders were now pressing in on Ishan, making it impossible for him to pivot towards the goal. But just as the situation seemed to tighten, Niyog burst into action, darting to the left with impressive speed, reminding everyone of the quick footedness that characterized their team. Amir's eyes lit up in recognition of the opportunity, and with a swift flick of his foot, he passed the ball to Niyog, whose determination was strong as he received it and prepared for the next play.

Niyog stood poised on the left flank, his eyes scanning the field for an opportunity. With a deft flick of his right foot, he launched a curling cross from the outskirts of the penalty area. The ball soared gracefully through the air, curving perfectly into the danger zone—an exquisite delivery that seemed destined for header goal. In that moment, all eyes were on Fazin, the nimble right forward of Kerala Kings, who found himself the sole occupant of the penalty box.

Yet, despite his fleetness of foot, Fazin was painfully aware of his disadvantage. Standing at just 5 foot 7 inches, he was dwarfed by the towering presence of Eizar's center backs, Alejandro Hugo and Luis Alvaro, both towering over him at over 6 feet. The ball hung tantalizingly in the air, but its height made a volley impractical; Fazin knew that his only chance lay in executing a header. With determination, he leapt into the fray, arms outstretched, eyes fixed on the approaching ball, hoping to defy the odds.

However, just as he made his connection, the defenders proved their mettle. Alejandro rushed in, timing his leap perfectly to meet the cross, and with a powerful header of his own, he sent the ball flying back downfield, quashing the Kerala Kings' hopes for a goal.

The ball zipped through the air, finding its target in Juan, who stood cool and composed as Niyog bore down from behind. With a flash of brilliance, Juan used his heels to nimbly roll the ball right through Niyog's legs. In one swift movement, he turned and danced away, dribbling the ball as if it were a playful puppy, leaving Niyog momentarily stunned.

"What da hailll...!? What just happened?" Niyog's mind raced, a swirl of disbelief as he watched his opponent glide past.

In the stands, Niyog's family was caught in a delightful whirlwind of emotions. Naomi couldn't contain herself, a soft "pffttt!!" escaping as she stifled her laughter at her brother's sudden plight.

"He just got nutmegged, haha," Niyog's father chuckled, his voice light with mirth.

Naomi chimed in, "I never thought I'd see my bro this miserable, haha."

With a smirk, their father added, "Naomi, your brother isn't that weak; just watch," leaving them all anticipating Niyog's next move as the game unfolded.
