Draven, with his tall and sturdy frame, walked slightly ahead of Nyssa, assuming the role of the scout.
The large bow slung across his back was ready for action at any moment. His sharp eyes remained vigilant, constantly scanning their surroundings for any sign of danger.
He was used to this kind of task, but something about the Death Forest made him uneasy. It felt as if unseen eyes were watching them from the darkness.
In the middle of the group, Lina, Draven's younger sister, walked gracefully with her mage's cloak billowing gently.
Her sharp eyes sparkled with magical energy, sensing every flow of power around them. She continuously activated her magical senses, trying to detect any sign of creatures or magical phenomena.
Any slight shift in the energy, however small, would be felt by Lina first.
Ethan took up the rear, following Nyssa's instructions. He preferred this position as it allowed him to observe his companions without appearing suspicious.
From the start, he felt the need to be cautious around this group, especially Lina. The young mage's power was not to be underestimated.
Valdraxx, the ancient dragon within him, had also warned him to remain vigilant.
Nyssa broke the silence with a question directed at Ethan. Her voice remained calm, but there was a hint of curiosity.
"I've come to understand the capabilities of everyone in our group, except for you, Ethan. As an adventurer who knows much about the creatures of Arkhana through your research, how have you managed to survive this long?"
Ethan paused, thinking carefully before answering. He knew Nyssa was smart and wouldn't be easily fooled by his calm demeanor.
He needed to protect his identity and powers, especially in front of someone as competent as Nyssa. However, Ethan also understood that in dangerous terrain like this, cooperation and trust would be key to everyone's survival.
"For years," Ethan began slowly, "I've studied the weaknesses of every creature I've encountered. Research and observation are my weapons. I may not be as strong as you in close combat or as skilled as Lina in magic, but my knowledge of these creatures gives me another advantage."
Nyssa glanced at Ethan as they continued walking, her expression unreadable. "You said you study their weaknesses. How do you deal with creatures whose power exceeds human limits?"
Ethan offered a faint smile before replying, "In many cases, no creature is without a weakness. Some can be defeated with strategy and traps, rather than brute strength. For those truly powerful beings, sometimes the best approach is avoidance, not battle. I know when to fight and when to retreat."
Draven, overhearing the conversation from the front, smirked slightly but kept his eyes on the path ahead.
"You sound like a very cautious man, Ethan. But in a place like the Death Forest, caution doesn't always cut it."
Lina, walking beside Ethan, glanced at him with a deeper gaze, as if trying to read more into him. "The energy around us is unusual," she murmured softly.
"And you... you have something different inside you, Ethan. I could sense it from the moment we met."
Ethan's breath caught for a moment at Lina's words. His eyes flickered, but only for a split second. Lina indeed possessed strong magical talents, and he didn't doubt her ability to sense something unusual.
However, Ethan knew he had to keep his secret well-guarded. Valdraxx, deep within him, whispered in his mind with a voice that rumbled like a storm, "Don't let them know too much, Ethan. They are not ready for the truth about you."
He smiled slightly at Lina and replied calmly, "We're all different, Lina. Our strengths are unique, and that's what helps us survive in a world filled with danger."
Nyssa cast a warning glance at Lina, silently signaling her not to probe too deeply. She knew that every adventurer had their own secrets, and forcing someone to reveal them could create unnecessary tension.
"We need to keep moving," Nyssa finally said, breaking the awkward silence. "The path ahead is more dangerous than before. If there are creatures lurking, they've likely been watching us for some time."
They continued their journey, following a darkening and winding trail. Tree roots spread across the ground, making their steps more difficult. Every rustle or shadow among the trees made the group tense, ready for an attack at any moment.
Meanwhile, Ethan could feel the oppressive energy of the Death Forest growing stronger, as if something more than wild creatures was watching them. The air felt heavy, and his energy seemed to be draining.
Valdraxx whispered once again in his mind, "Be careful, Ethan. This isn't just an ordinary forest. There's something darker hiding within it. You can feel it, can't you?"
Ethan silently nodded to himself. He could sense it too something older and far more evil than just the usual forest monsters. Something that had been rooted in this land for centuries, waiting for the right moment to rise.
Suddenly, from a distance, an eerie sound echoed a deep, guttural roar, far from the usual noises of the forest creatures. The ground beneath their feet trembled slightly.
"What was that?" Draven asked, his voice serious and alert.
Nyssa stopped, her face tense. "I don't know, but we can't take it lightly. Everyone, stay alert."
Ahead of them, there was a soft rustling sound from the bushes, as if something large was moving through the underbrush.
Draven quickly reached for his bow and drew an arrow from the quiver on his back, ready to shoot.
"Something's in front of us," he whispered, his voice barely audible but clear enough for the others. His eyes focused sharply on the bushes that were gently moving ahead.
Lina closed her eyes for a moment, sensing the energy around them. "A creature... but not like an ordinary animal. This... is dark energy," she whispered, her brow furrowed.
Nyssa nodded, bracing herself for action if the creature appeared. "Ethan, be ready," she said calmly but with a tone of warning.
"The creatures in this forest aren't like the ones we've faced before."
Ethan didn't need to be told twice. His hand was already on the hilt of his dagger, ready to draw it at a moment's notice. Valdraxx's deep voice rumbled again in his mind, like the creaking of an ancient tree, "Be careful, Ethan. The energy here... is different. Not all creatures we encounter can be seen with the naked eye."
The tension thickened as the bushes finally stopped rustling. Everyone remained still, waiting to see what would happen next.
But after what felt like hours, the creature seemed to decide to leave. They heard its heavy footsteps slowly retreat into the darkness.
Nyssa exhaled softly, signaling for the group to continue. "We need to stay more vigilant. This is just the beginning."
The group moved forward again, now with even more caution. The sounds of wild animals echoed in the distance, amplifying the underlying fear among them.
Hours passed, and the path through the forest became increasingly difficult to follow. Massive tree roots crisscrossed the ground, and dense bushes blocked their way.
Ethan began to feel the strain, though not from physical exhaustion. It was the effect of the dark energy surrounding them. Valdraxx warned him again, "Be careful, Ethan. This forest drains not just your physical strength but your mental power as well."
Suddenly, Lina stopped with a startled look on her face. "Something's approaching," she whispered sharply, her voice filled with alertness.
From a distance, a rumbling noise could be heard, growing louder and closer, like the footsteps of a large creature moving swiftly through the forest.
Nyssa quickly led them to shelter behind a large rock, motioning for everyone to crouch and stay alert.
Ethan's heart pounded in his chest. From behind the bushes ahead, a massive figure emerged, terrifying in its appearance.
The creature had a body resembling a giant ape, but with long claws and frightening fangs. Its eyes glowed red in the dim light, and its body was covered in moss and black fungi that seemed to grow from its very skin.
"That's... Gorgonor," Nyssa whispered in shock. "A legendary creature from the Death Forest. We must be extremely cautious."
Gorgonor paused, sniffing the air around it, searching for the scent of prey.
Ethan's group remained silent, trying not to draw its attention. The creature let out a low growl, a sound so deep it made the ground tremble beneath them.
Ethan felt the presence of Valdraxx in his mind, ready to lend his power if needed. "This is no ordinary foe. But if we must fight, you know what to do."
Tension hung in the air, and every second felt like an eternity. The Death Forest was living up to its name, with dangers lurking in every corner.
Now, all they could do was hope that Gorgonor would leave before they were forced into a battle that could change everything.
