Chapter 1 - News That Changes Everything

The room was quiet for once. In the past four years, Kaitlin would see her sister-in-law or her friends talking around the house or plotting to do something to Kaitlin. Kaitlin woke up earlier than usual since she had a doctor's appointment early in the morning. In the last two weeks, she had not been feeling good and since her mother had died of breast cancer she wanted to make sure that her health was in top condition.

Kaitlin took the folded paper in her hands and opened it once more to read what it said. She couldn't believe she was two months pregnant. She had given up all hope of getting pregnant at all since ever since she had gotten married to Samuel he had not even touched her once. She placed her free hand on her belly where her baby was growing, "I am looking forward to meeting you little one, my little miracle."

Steps were heard coming from the hallway and Kaitlin put the paper way in her side table of her bed. As she was closing the drawer Samuel walked into the room stopping in front of the bed.

"Hi Samuel, what brings you over today?" Kaitlin asked as she smoothed out her dress skirt.

"Why did you go to the doctor today?" Samuel asked taking Kaitlin's appearance.

"Let me guess, Lorain told you," Kaitlin said as she moved around the bed to stand before Samuel.

"It does not matter who told me," Samuel said, "Why did you go to the doctor?"

Kaitlin took a deep breath and looked Samuel directly in the eyes, "It turns out that I am pregnant, the doctor said I am two months along," Kaitlin said as she held his eyes. Kaitlin took in all of his emotion at that time, during the time that it took him to react to the news at no point did he show an ounce of happiness. There was disgust and resentment in his eyes. She swallowed back the cry of outrage that she wanted to let out at the moment as she placed a protective hand over her belly. "Why did you marry me?"

Samuel came out of his stupper at Kaitlin's question and looked at her, "Why would you ask that question?" Samuel asked, "What is important right now is making sure that we take care of this situation before it can't be taken care of."

Kaitlin took a step back, "I am keeping my baby," Kaitlin said, "we have been married for four years and in that time you never touched me until two months ago."

"That night was a mistake it should not have happened at all," Samuel said. "Make the appointment with the doctor and take care of this right away."

Kaitlin took a deep breath, "I need you to answer me one question first," she said as she moved closer to Samuel, "if you didn't love me and wanted to be with me, then why did you marry me?"

Samuel shook his head, "You were a means to an end, to get the position at the company I needed to get married and you were the only option at the time. You fit the role of the adoring and loving wife that I need to get the trust of the board back." Samuel said.

Kaitlin took a step back, the blow that Samul had just delivered took all the air out of her. At the beginning of their marriage, Kaitlin had believed that Samuel had some affection for her since he had decided to marry her. Samuel had asked Kaitlin's brother Nathan for her hand in marriage. It had been a big and grand occasion for both of their families or at least that was what Kaitlin had thought at the time. After a few months of being married, Kaitlin started to get mistreated by her sister-in-law Laura.

"Make the appointment, I will be gone on a business trip for four days and when I get back the situation should be resolved," Samuel said turning around and walking out of the room.

Kaitlin took the last couple of steps to sit on her bed. She saw as Samuel walked out of the room, she couldn't believe that after the last four years, Samuel's attitude and demeanor had gotten worse with her. She placed her hand over her stomach, "You are not a burden baby, you are loved and wanted," Kaitlin said talking to her unborn child.

Kaitlin's last hope of having a loving relationship with Samuel died at that moment. She finally understood that Samuel was not going to love her in the same way that she loved him. She had tried talking to her brother about what was happening with Samuel and his only response was to give Samuel time to know me better.

Kaitlin needed to get out of the room and get some fresh air to clear her head, she made her way out of her room and down the stairs. As she was descending she heard voices coming from the living room.

"Can you believe her, she actually thought that Samuel would be happy," Laura said to Stephanie one of her friends as they had taken seats in the living room.

"Laura I would appreciate it if you would not talk about my private life with your friends," Kaitlin said as she walked into the living room.

"Can't handle to truth," Stephanie said as she looked Kaitlin up and down.

"You should have known that after Celia, Samuel was never going to love anyone, you are so stupid Kaitlin," Laura said as she motioned for Stephanie to follow her.

"I never noticed it before but she does resemble Celia a little bit," Stephanie said as she passed Kaitling to the door.

"They would after all they are cousins," Laura said as she looked back one more time at Kaitlin before letting out the evil laugh that Kaitlin had gotten used to whenever Laura would bother her.

At that moment Kaitlin knew that she could not stay in the house a moment more, that she could not stay married to Samuel anymore. She had given him her heart only to have him step all over it. With the conception of her baby, she had found new hope that life was not all bad. She needs to start planning and she needs to get everything done in the next four days while Samuel is on his trip. Usually, the times that Samuel was gone were the times that Laura's tricks and punishment would get more severe and although she had a brother she could not count on him. Nathan was just as blind as Samuel to the abuse that Kaitlin would receive.Â
