Chapter 14: A Test of Resolve
Kor awoke early the next morning, his mind racing with thoughts of the gem, the scroll, and his parents. His sleep had been restless, filled with dreams of faceless Lords standing in a circle, watching him as he held the gem in his hand. Their eyes had glowed with the same light that now seemed to emanate from the stone. Kor knew that the path ahead would not be easy.
Zira approached him quietly as he sat by the remnants of the fire, stirring the coals with a stick. Her presence always carried a sense of calm, yet today, her expression seemed even more serious than usual.
"Are you ready?" she asked, her voice soft yet filled with the weight of something significant.
Kor nodded. "I need to find my parents, Zira. Whatever it takes."
She studied him for a long moment, as if trying to gauge his resolve. "The Lords are ancient, Kor. They are more powerful than any single person. The gem may give you some advantage, but you must not rely solely on it. Your strength, your mind, and your spirit will be what truly carry you forward."
"I understand," Kor replied, though a part of him still wondered how much power the gem truly held. Could it be enough to match the strength of the Lords?
Zira glanced toward the horizon, where the first rays of sunlight were breaking through the trees. "We will leave soon. But before we do, I have one final test for you."
Kor's stomach tightened. Another test. He had barely passed the first one when Zira had tested his connection to the gem and the earth. But he nodded, ready to face whatever came next.
"What do I need to do?" he asked, standing up and brushing the dirt from his hands.
Zira gestured toward a nearby path that led deeper into the forest. "There is a place, not far from here, where the energy of the elements is strong. It is a sacred site, long forgotten by most. You must go there and face what lies within. If you succeed, you will prove that you are truly ready to continue on this journey."
Kor felt a rush of apprehension. "What lies within?"
Zira's expression remained neutral, though her eyes hinted at something dangerous. "Only those who seek power find their way to this place. But power comes with a price. The test is not only of your strength, but of your heart."
Kor swallowed hard, but his resolve remained. "I'll do it."
Without another word, Zira handed him a small leather pouch. "Inside, you'll find herbs for healing, should you need them. But remember—this is a test of your limits. Only use them if you absolutely must."
Kor took the pouch, tying it to his belt, and set off down the path. The air grew cooler the further he went, the trees growing denser and the light dimmer. It felt as if the forest itself was closing in on him, watching his every move.
He walked for what felt like hours, his senses on high alert, the tension in the air thickening with each step. Eventually, the path led him to a clearing, much like the one where he had found the ancient tree and the scroll. But this clearing was different. At its center stood a towering stone monolith, covered in moss and vines. Strange symbols were etched into its surface—symbols that were eerily similar to those on the scroll.
As Kor approached, the red gem in his pocket began to pulse again, this time more intensely than before. He pulled it out and held it up, watching as the light from the gem bathed the monolith in a soft, red glow. The symbols on the stone began to shift and move, just like the ones on the scroll had done.
Suddenly, the ground beneath Kor's feet trembled, and he stumbled backward. The monolith cracked, a jagged line running from its base to its peak. The air hummed with energy, and from the crack, a figure emerged.
Kor's breath caught in his throat. It was a woman—tall, with striking features and eyes that glowed with a fiery intensity. Her hair was long and dark, falling in waves around her shoulders, and her movements were graceful yet powerful. She was unlike anyone Kor had ever seen.
The woman stepped forward, her gaze locked on Kor. "You seek power," she said, her voice smooth and commanding. "But power comes at a cost."
Kor stood his ground, clutching the gem in his hand. "I don't seek power for myself. I'm trying to find my parents."
The woman tilted her head, as if considering his words. "The gem you carry is not just a tool. It is a link to forces beyond your understanding. To wield it is to challenge those who hold dominion over this world."
Kor swallowed, feeling the weight of her words. "Then tell me how to use it. If it's connected to the Lords, it might be the only way to find out what happened to my parents."
The woman's expression softened slightly, though her eyes still glowed with that strange intensity. "The Lords are protectors, but their power has drawn many who seek to control it. You are walking a dangerous path, young one. But if your heart is true, I will grant you my blessing."
Kor blinked, surprised. "Your blessing?"
The woman raised her hand, and the red gem flared brightly in Kor's hand. He felt a surge of energy rush through him, almost overwhelming in its intensity. The air around him crackled with power, and for a moment, he thought he might collapse under the weight of it.
But then, as quickly as it had come, the energy subsided, leaving Kor feeling stronger than before. The woman's eyes glowed brighter, and she smiled—a fierce, proud smile.
"You are worthy," she said. "But remember this: strength alone will not carry you to your goal. Your heart and your mind must be in harmony. Only then can you face the Lords and uncover the truth you seek."
Kor nodded, still catching his breath. "I understand. Thank you."
The woman stepped back, her form beginning to fade into the mist that had gathered around the monolith. "Go now," she said, her voice echoing in the air. "And may the elements guide you."
As she disappeared, the monolith sealed itself once more, the crack vanishing as if it had never been there. Kor stood alone in the clearing, the red gem warm in his hand.
He had passed the test.
When Kor returned to the camp, Zira was waiting for him, her arms crossed as she watched him approach. There was a knowing look in her eyes, as if she had expected him to succeed all along.
"You did well," she said simply. "But remember—this is only the beginning."
Kor nodded, his grip tightening on the gem. He was more determined than ever to find his parents and uncover the truth behind the Lords. He didn't know what lay ahead, but he knew one thing for certain: he would not stop until he had the answers he sought.
Zira turned toward the mountains in the distance, her eyes narrowing. "We leave at dawn. The next part of your journey will take us closer to the heart of the Lords' territory."
Kor looked toward the mountains as well, feeling a mix of anticipation and dread. The Lords, the protectors of this world, held the key to everything. And he was ready to face whatever trials awaited him, even if it meant challenging the strongest beings he had ever known.
The search for his parents continued, but now, Kor felt stronger—more capable of facing the unknown. With Zira by his side and the power of the gem growing within him, he was ready to take the next step toward his destiny.
