Chapter 30 - Chapter 30 : The Weight of Secrets

Yeon-ah and Juna crouched in the narrow alcove, their breaths still ragged from the frantic escape. The fortress had gone eerily quiet, but the oppressive presence of its dark energy clung to the air around them, thick and suffocating. Yeon-ah's mind was racing, piecing together what had just happened. Her mentor—now twisted and controlled—had shown brief moments of recognition, but the fortress's hold was too strong. She couldn't be saved… at least not yet.

Juna leaned against the cold stone wall, her eyes wide with fear. "We can't go back out there, Yeon-ah," she whispered. "She'll kill us. She's not… she's not her anymore."

Yeon-ah pressed her lips together in a tight line. "She's still in there, Juna. I saw it. She's fighting it."

"But how?" Juna's voice wavered. "How do we save her? The fortress—it's too powerful. You saw what it did to her."

Yeon-ah didn't answer right away. Instead, she stared at the stone beneath her feet, feeling the subtle hum of energy beneath the surface. The fortress is alive… it's manipulating her. But why?

She clenched her fists, frustration bubbling inside her. There had to be a reason the fortress had taken her mentor and turned her into that… monster. The fortress wasn't just some mindless force. It had purpose, intent.

Yeon-ah's eyes narrowed as she glanced toward the faint light filtering through the corridor ahead. "We need to understand the fortress. If we can find out what it wants, maybe we can figure out how to break its hold."

Juna frowned, her voice small. "But how do we do that? We barely escaped last time."

Yeon-ah stood slowly, her muscles aching from the earlier battle. "We go deeper. There's something hidden in this place—something it's protecting. If we can find it, maybe we'll have a chance to save her."

Juna's face paled. "Go deeper? You mean… back where she is?"

Yeon-ah nodded. "We don't have a choice. She's still alive in there, Juna. I'm not leaving her behind."

They moved cautiously through the fortress's twisting corridors, the oppressive silence broken only by the faint whispers that seemed to follow them wherever they went. Every step felt heavier, as though the very ground beneath them was pushing back against their movements. Yeon-ah's grip on her sword was tight, her senses heightened. She could feel the fortress watching, waiting.

As they descended deeper into the fortress, the air grew colder, the stone walls slick with moisture and darkness. The whispers grew louder, more coherent. This time, Yeon-ah could make out words, faint and distorted, but undeniably there.

"She is lost…"

"He cannot escape…"

"All are bound…"

The voices overlapped, like a chorus of tortured souls trapped within the very stone of the fortress. Juna shivered beside her, clutching her cloak tightly around her small frame.

"They're getting louder," Juna whispered, her eyes wide with fear.

Yeon-ah nodded, her jaw set. "We're getting closer."

As they rounded another corner, the passage opened into a massive chamber, larger than any they had seen before. The ceiling stretched high above them, vanishing into the shadows. At the center of the room stood a towering structure—a monolith of black stone, its surface etched with glowing symbols that pulsed with a faint, eerie light.

Yeon-ah's breath caught in her throat. This is it. This is what the fortress is protecting.

Juna's voice was barely a whisper. "What… what is that?"

Yeon-ah took a slow step forward, her eyes fixed on the monolith. "It's connected to the fortress somehow. It has to be. This is the key."

But as they moved closer, the ground trembled beneath their feet. The whispers in the room swelled, growing louder and more frantic. Yeon-ah felt the weight of the fortress bearing down on her, pushing her back, but she pressed on, determined.

"We have to destroy it," Yeon-ah muttered, more to herself than to Juna. "If we break this, it might weaken the fortress's control."

"But what if it makes things worse?" Juna's voice trembled. "We don't know what it does…"

Yeon-ah hesitated. She didn't know what the monolith was or what it controlled, but she knew one thing for certain—whatever it was, the fortress was desperate to protect it.

As they neared the base of the monolith, the symbols carved into its surface pulsed more rapidly, the light growing brighter. The air around them thickened, and Yeon-ah felt a deep, guttural hum reverberating through her chest. The fortress was reacting to their presence, trying to force them back.

Suddenly, a sharp, high-pitched noise rang out, like the sound of metal scraping against stone. Yeon-ah flinched, her sword instinctively raised.

Out of the shadows, a figure stepped forward. It wasn't her mentor this time, but something else. Its form was twisted, vaguely human, but its body was bent at unnatural angles, its limbs too long, and its skin stretched tight over bone. Its face was distorted, with hollow, empty eyes that glowed faintly in the dim light.

Juna gasped, stumbling backward. "What… what is that?"

Yeon-ah tightened her grip on her sword. "Something the fortress has made."

The creature let out a low, guttural hiss, its body twitching violently as it advanced toward them. Yeon-ah stepped in front of Juna, her heart pounding in her chest. I can't let this thing stop us. Not now.

The creature lunged forward with alarming speed, its limbs moving with unnatural fluidity. Yeon-ah barely had time to block the first attack, her sword clashing against its sharp, claw-like hands. The force of the impact sent a jolt through her arms, but she held her ground.

"Get back!" Yeon-ah shouted at Juna, her voice strained as she pushed the creature back with all her strength.

Juna scrambled to the side, her wide eyes fixed on the fight.

The creature hissed again, its body twisting as it circled Yeon-ah, looking for an opening. But Yeon-ah's eyes were locked on it, her mind focused. I can't let it get to Juna.

With a quick, precise strike, Yeon-ah swung her sword, aiming for the creature's exposed side. The blade connected with a sickening crunch, and the creature let out a screech, its body convulsing as it staggered back.

But this time, Yeon-ah didn't press forward. Something about the way the creature moved—its erratic, unpredictable motions—told her this fight wasn't going to be simple. The creature's screech echoed in the chamber, and as it reeled back, the ground beneath their feet trembled again.

From the walls, more figures began to emerge—similar in appearance but smaller, faster. Their bodies contorted in unnatural ways as they crawled toward Yeon-ah and Juna with terrifying speed.

Juna let out a strangled cry. "Yeon-ah! There's more!"

Yeon-ah's grip tightened on her sword, her mind racing. They're trying to overwhelm us. She swung at the first creature, severing its arm, but it continued moving, unfazed by the loss. These things don't feel pain.

"Stay behind me!" Yeon-ah shouted, her eyes darting between the approaching creatures. I can't take them all on at once… but if I can just get to the monolith—

The larger creature lunged at her again, and this time, Yeon-ah was ready. She sidestepped the attack, slashing at its legs with a fluid motion, sending it crashing to the ground. But before she could deliver the finishing blow, two smaller creatures leapt at her from the side. Yeon-ah barely managed to block their attacks, her arms straining under the force.

The creatures' speed and unpredictability were starting to wear her down, and she knew she couldn't keep this up forever. But she had to reach the monolith. That was the key.

"Juna!" Yeon-ah called out, her voice strained as she blocked another attack. "Get to the monolith! We have to stop this!"

Juna hesitated, her face pale with fear. "But—"

"Go!" Yeon-ah shouted, her voice sharp with urgency.

Juna nodded, her movements shaky, and she darted toward the monolith. Yeon-ah focused on holding the creatures back, her sword flashing in the dim light as she fought to keep them from overwhelming her.

The ground trembled again, and this time, a deep, resonating hum filled the chamber, as though the fortress itself was responding to their intrusion. The creatures moved faster, more frantic, their attacks more vicious. Yeon-ah's muscles burned with exertion, but she held her ground.

Just a little longer, Yeon-ah thought, gritting her teeth. We can do this.
