Chapter 1 - Prologue

Had it not been for that fateful experience, I wouldn't have ended up with this disc that has turned my life into a living nightmare.A year ago, I worked as a software engineer in Zhongguancun. My job was quite stressful, so I took up hiking as a hobby. Every weekend, I would pack my trusty backpack and venture into the suburbs, on a quest to conquer a new mountain, often choosing to sleep under the stars. This ritual became a cherished part of my life, and I've left my mark on nearly every accessible peak surrounding Beijing. That experience took place in early fall last year. I climbed a small mountain in Pinggu District by myself again. Once I reached the summit and pitched my tent, I treated myself to a quick snack, only to realize that it had already turned dark.Just as I was about to settle into the tent for the night, I heard some sharp metallic clinks from the base of the mountain, along with flashes of sparks. This mountain is deserted, with the closest village located around 2 kilometers down at its base. The noises and lights seemed to be originating from halfway up the mountain.I crept closer, crouching low to get a better view, and sure enough, I spotted a few shadows at the halfway up the mountain chasing each other, alongside a parked car. My heart raced as I watched those shadows suddenly sprinting toward the summit. Could they be heading my way? A chill ran down my spine at the thought—what if they were some vengeful troublemakers? The last thing I needed was to find myself caught in a dangerous showdown!I rushed back, donned my backpack, and got ready to sprint at any second. Yet, my curiosity compelled me to glance down from the summit. As I ascended the mountain, which was covered in rocks, I noticed a few shadows grappling on the steep incline. It appeared to be a standoff akin to a gunfight, but their guns were silent. I could, however, see something striking the rocks, producing a sharp noise and sparks. I was so frightened that I started sweating coldly. As I watched them continue to advance, my only thought was to escape. I hurriedly descended from another mountain peak, stopped halfway to catch my breath, and when I noticed what appeared to be silence, I began to regret leaving my tent behind. It was a high-quality tent that had cost me a pretty penny, and it would be a real shame to lose it.As I made my way back up the mountain, a brilliant yellow light suddenly zipped across the sky, darting past the summit like a shooting star. My heart raced, and in a flurry of panic, I hurriedly descended the slopes. Hours later, after mustering my courage, I ventured back to the peak, only to find everything appeared calm and undisturbed, as if the earlier event had never occurred.I quickly packed the tent and rushed down the mountain. After only a few steps, I heard a man shouting, "Bobcat, I'm here!! Bobcat!"This frightened me and caused me to break out in a cold sweat. However, the man's voice sounded quite weak. I paused for a moment, but ultimately decided to move towards where the voice was coming from. There was a man whose face was covered in blood. I felt a slight chill, but I moved closer to him as he lay between two big rocks. When I reached him, he yelled, "Bobcat, I can't hold it. You need to take this disc away first." He then threw a plastic case in my direction from where he was.I said I'm not Bobcat. But he didn't care and kept babbling on, "Take it away, quickly. They will definitely come looking for it."I gazed into his eyes and noticed they appeared to be fading. I told him, "I'll get you out of here."He murmured, "Hurry up, hurry up, there's no time left." After that, he leaned his head to the side and became quiet.I grabbed him and shook him twice, but his body was already lifeless. He died? I was shocked. It was the first time I had witnessed death up close, and my heart was pounding. Overwhelmed by fear, I snatched the CD case and hurriedly rolled down the mountain in a state of panic.I have completely forgotten how I got back to the shabby apartment I rented in Beijing.I questioned whether I was dreaming. How could I experience something like this? However, when I opened my backpack and saw the CD case with bloodstains still inside, I began to accept that this was indeed real.My curiosity prompted me to open the CD case, revealing a disc with a soft blue cover, gently resting inside. I took the disc out and noticed that the back was a striking dark blue.I examined the disc, and it did't have a standard number, but it appeared to be different from typical discs. What is this about? It can't possibly be a national secret, right? That's the first thing that came to my mind.As a software engineer, I have plenty of computers at home. Out of curiosity, I decided to put this disc into my computer's optical drive. The disc was accessed, but when I opened it, it was empty. That seems improbable, doesn't it? Did I accidentally grab a blank disc? If so, why did that man appear so serious and grave when he handed it to me?I didn't believe this disc was empty.I spent an entire week examining this disc. As one of the leading computer specialists in our company, I found it hard to believe that I could't figure out what exactly was on it.In the end, with assistance from a colleague, I examined the disc's surface and confirmed that it held content, specifically large files. It was possible that my drive wasn't compatible with this type of disc, so I attempted to convert it to DVD format. I reached out to some friends who create pirated copies of discs and used their equipment to read the data directly from the disc, then transferred it into DVD format. To my astonishment, after several tries, it actually worked.A total of 15 DVD discs were transferred, each containing a file in an unknown format.Following that was the extremely challenging task of decoding, which took an entire month. My supervisor in the company criticized me for being distracted throughout the day, but I didn't care. Once I returned home, I immediately began creating a decoder to interpret these files. I was so absorbed that I even neglected my favorite hobby - traveling. After a month of hard work, I successfully created a program capable of launching these files. They appeared to be videos, but the output was filled with electromagnetic noises and vibrant light spots.Having reached this stage, I realized that I had already conquered the toughest challenge!A month later, as I anxiously began the latest program, dawn had already arrived. In the screen, the video flickered for a moment, and then started to appear. I shouted loudly, "I did it!"Then I quickly calmed down and carefully looked at the video in the screen. This video was very strange, it seems like a person was using a DV camera in place of their eyes to capture the scene. More accurately, it seems to reflect what a person would genuinely observe. The video was lengthy, and the audio quality was somewhat poor, yet it remained comprehensible. The individual who recorded this video should be a man. The video featured numerous people appearing sporadically, and in certain sections, it had a shaky quality that added to its mysteriousness. The video moved at a slow pace, but I watched it patiently because of its thorough documentary style.I noticed a company situated in the building next to ours, which really caught my attention. I took a week off and dedicated my time to watching these videos day and night. The more I watched, the more I felt that the visuals of videos were something a person saw or imagined. As the third DVD began, the main character started experiencing unusual events: having sex with a woman, falling to the ground, running, navigating through crowds, hiding in what appears to be a corner, leaping into a ditch, and splattering water everywhere. He was pursued closely by a group of people on multiple occasions. While wandering through the city, he reached a train station where he was again chased by a group, climbed onto a train, and was surrounded by black coal dust in the air. After getting off the train, he stole some clothes and asked others for buns to eat.The fourth DVD became even stranger, as the main character was chased by person in gray uniforms. A fight broke out between the police and those in gray uniforms, followed by imprisonment and escape. Three figures darted through the sky, appearing somewhat human but also distinctly different. If these were actual documentaries, I found it difficult to accept that they were filmed in this manner. All the scenes and shots appeared to be experienced directly, and I began to suspect that these were someone's memory. The video primarily featured black and white visuals, but occasionally burst of vivid colors dominating the entire screen. At times, bold colors appeared in specific sections, mainly consisting of primary hues such as red, yellow, and blue. This created an impression that the film was extraordinarily strange.I stayed indoors for a whole week, surviving solely on instant noodles and sporting a scruffy beard. Each DVD was quite lengthy, allowing for a full day and night of viewing, but there were also large sections of nothing with only noise. I had to skip around to finish watching them in a day and night. However, after a week, I still only managed to watch six DVDs.My eyes were red and swollen, and I hardly slept, yet I couldn't look away. The plot had surpassed the wildest dreams of everyday individuals, almost as if someone was escaping from the clutches of a powerful organization.I couldn't keep taking time off, so I took a short break to recharge and then returned to work. Everyone noticed a difference in me and asked if something had happened this week, but I just stared blankly and said nothing.I went over to the company situated in the building next to ours to check it out, and it turned out to be true; the scenes on the DVD matched exactly what I had witnessed. I started to believe that these were someone's memory, and it felt as though I was fully engaged in the memory, living through the events as if they were occurring to me.I intended to document my observations. Once I had completed my work, I began writing while watching. Although my writing abilities weren't the best, I was confident that I could capture everything.I documented everything and quickly emailed them to multiple online accounts, without storing them on my device. I was not sure why, but I felt quite anxious about saving them locally. The whole experience of documenting and watching the DVDs took over three months, and I finally felt a sense of relief once I completed all the documents.I had realized that the things I knew were no longer what someone like me should know; everything here exceeded my typical understanding.Another month went by, and I sensed that something was wrong. It seemed as though I was constantly being watched, and even at night when I was sleeping, I felt like there were eyes outside the window staring at me.Due to my poor condition, I was fired by the company. They thought I seemed to have mental issues.I was unable to sleep, restless and turning in bed all night as I gazed out the window, until I finally noticed a pair of eyes staring back at me. At that moment, I decided to leave this city.I wish for someone to notice my article. As I compose this, I can sense someone watching me from outside the window. However, it feels like it's already too late...
