Chapter 14 - The Relic's Power II

The storm had passed, leaving behind an eerie silence that filled the air. The ancient temple stood in ruins, its stone pillars cracked and broken, the once-majestic chamber now a shadow of its former self. Lin Xi and Su Qinghe stood in the center of the destruction, their breaths heavy as the adrenaline from the battle slowly ebbed away.

Lin Xi glanced down at the relic, its glow now faint, as if it had used up much of its power in their fight. She could still feel its energy coursing through her, but it was quieter now, as though the relic itself was resting.

"We need to get out of here," Su Qinghe said, sheathing his sword. His gaze swept over the destruction around them. "Before more of Hēilóng Dì's followers arrive."

Lin Xi nodded. The battle had drawn attention—there was no doubt about that. The Black Dragon Emperor's forces would be hunting them more fiercely than ever now that they had one of the relics.

Liú Jùn limped into the chamber, his face pale but determined. "The entrance is clear for now," he said, his voice hoarse from exhaustion. "But we need to move quickly. There's no telling how long we have before they send reinforcements."

Lin Xi felt a pang of guilt as she looked at him. He had been through so much, pushed to his limits, but he never complained. They all knew how important their mission was. There was no room for weakness.

"We'll take the mountain path down," Lin Xi said. "It's risky, but we'll avoid being seen."

Su Qinghe nodded in agreement. "The quicker we leave, the better. We'll regroup and figure out our next move."

Together, the three of them made their way out of the shattered temple, moving swiftly despite their exhaustion. The mountain wind was still cold, biting at their faces as they descended the narrow path. The tension of the battle still lingered in the air, but Lin Xi felt a small sense of relief. They had the relic. It was a victory, however small.

As they reached the base of the mountain, the sun began to rise in the distance, casting a warm glow over the snow-covered peaks. Lin Xi paused for a moment, watching as the first rays of sunlight touched the horizon. It felt surreal, standing here after everything that had happened.

"We're not done yet," Su Qinghe said quietly, stepping up beside her. "There's more ahead of us."

Lin Xi sighed softly, her breath visible in the cold morning air. "I know. But we have the relic now. That's a start."

Su Qinghe's gaze softened as he looked at her, and for a brief moment, the weight of their mission seemed to lift. "You fought well back there."

Lin Xi smiled faintly, her heart warming at his words. "You did too."

They stood in silence for a moment, the unspoken bond between them growing stronger. Lin Xi could feel it—this connection that had formed between them during their journey. They were more than just comrades now. There was trust, respect, and something deeper she couldn't quite put into words.

But before the moment could linger, Liú Jùn's voice interrupted them. "We should keep moving. It's not safe here."

Su Qinghe nodded, his expression turning serious once more. "He's right. Let's go."

They continued down the mountain, making their way through the forest that stretched out at its base. The trees were thick and tall, their branches forming a canopy overhead that blocked out much of the morning light. The path was narrow and winding, but it offered them cover from prying eyes.

As they walked, Lin Xi's mind drifted to the next steps of their journey. They still had several relics to find, and the Black Dragon Emperor's forces would stop at nothing to get them first. They needed a plan, and more importantly, they needed allies.

"We'll need help," she said aloud, voicing her thoughts. "We can't do this alone."

Su Qinghe glanced at her, his brow furrowed. "You're right. But who can we trust?"

Lin Xi hesitated. Trust was a rare commodity in their world, especially with the Black Dragon Emperor's influence spreading like a shadow over the land. But there were still those who opposed him—those who would fight to keep him from rising again.

"There's someone," Liú Jùn said quietly from behind them. "An old friend of my father. He was one of the Guardians, like your family, Su Qinghe. He might be able to help us."

Su Qinghe's eyes narrowed. "If he's a Guardian, why isn't he fighting already?"

Liú Jùn looked down, a shadow passing over his face. "He…disappeared after my father died. But I believe he's still out there, hiding. If we can find him, he could be a powerful ally."

Lin Xi exchanged a glance with Su Qinghe. It was a risk, but they were running out of options. If there was even a chance that this Guardian could help them, they had to take it.

"Where do we start?" Lin Xi asked.

Liú Jùn paused, his face thoughtful. "There's an old fortress in the southern mountains. That's where he was last seen. If he's still alive, that's where we'll find him."

Su Qinghe nodded, determination hardening his features. "Then that's where we're headed."

Lin Xi felt a flicker of hope. They weren't alone in this fight. If they could find this Guardian, maybe they stood a chance against the Black Dragon Emperor's forces.

As they continued on their path, the forest around them grew quieter, the shadows deepening as the sun began to set once more. They still had a long way to go, but for the first time in a while, Lin Xi felt that they were moving toward something instead of just running away.

The journey was far from over, but they were ready for whatever came next.
