Chapter 14 - [A night to remember]

The air was warm with the scent of blooming flowers as twilight set in, casting a soft, golden hue over the small lakeside restaurant Daniel had chosen for Anna's birthday. The place was perfect—intimate, quiet, away from the bustle of the city. He had been planning this night for weeks, trying to make sure everything was just right. After all, tonight wasn't just about celebrating another year in Anna's life—it was about their future, a future he had been quietly dreaming of for as long as he could remember.

He glanced toward the entrance as he stood by the table, adjusting his jacket. His heart raced in anticipation. He had never been so nervous in his life, not even during the biggest business deals they had faced together. This was different. This was personal. He was about to ask the woman he loved to be his forever.

Moments later, Anna walked in, and Daniel felt like the world stopped. She was stunning. Her long hair was loose, cascading over her shoulders like a waterfall of silk. The soft evening light danced across her features, highlighting her sparkling eyes and the subtle smile playing on her lips. She wore a flowing, dark blue dress that hugged her figure perfectly, moving with her as though she were floating on air.

"Daniel," she breathed, her smile widening as she saw him. "This place is beautiful. You always know how to surprise me."

He smiled back, his heart swelling with love. "Only the best for you," he replied, pulling out a chair for her. As she sat, he felt that familiar warmth in his chest, the feeling he always had when he was near her.

The night unfolded beautifully. They shared laughter and stories, reminiscing about the early days of their relationship, those tentative moments when they were still unsure of each other's feelings. Anna teased him about how quiet he had been back then, how she had thought for the longest time that he wasn't interested.

"I was interested," Daniel protested with a grin, leaning closer to her. "I was just... terrified."

"Of me?" Anna raised an eyebrow playfully. "I didn't bite back then."

"No, but you had this... energy," Daniel said, searching for the right words. "You were always so sure of yourself, always so alive. I didn't know how to keep up."

Anna smiled, her eyes softening as she reached across the table, placing her hand on his. "You did, though," she whispered. "You've always known how to keep up with me."

They sat like that for a while, just holding hands, letting the moment linger between them. The restaurant staff had prepared everything perfectly, from the soft lighting to the gentle music playing in the background. The lake outside shimmered in the moonlight, casting a serene glow over the evening.

As dessert was served, Daniel felt the weight of the ring box in his jacket pocket. His heart pounded in his chest. This was it. The moment he had been waiting for. He knew it had to be now, while the night was still perfect, before anything could interrupt the magic of the evening.

"Anna," he said softly, pulling her gaze back to him. "There's something I've been wanting to tell you."

She tilted her head slightly, curiosity dancing in her eyes. "What is it?"

Daniel took a deep breath, his fingers brushing against the box hidden in his pocket. His mind flashed back to the countless times he had rehearsed this moment in his head, the words he had tried to memorize. But now, sitting in front of her, none of that seemed to matter. All that mattered was the truth—the depth of what he felt for her.

"I've loved you for a long time," he began, his voice steady despite the emotion building inside him. "Long before we ever said it out loud. You've been... everything to me, Anna. You've changed my life in ways I can't even begin to explain."

Anna's smile faltered for a moment, her eyes widening as she listened, clearly sensing the importance of what he was about to say.

"You've always been the strongest person I know," Daniel continued, his hand tightening around hers. "And you've given me more love and happiness than I ever thought possible. Every day with you is a gift. And I don't want to spend another day without knowing that you'll be mine, completely."

Anna blinked, her lips parting slightly in surprise as her hand tightened in his. "Daniel..."

Before she could say more, Daniel stood from his seat, moving around to kneel in front of her. He could see the way her breath hitched, the way her eyes sparkled with a mixture of disbelief and joy. The world seemed to fall away as he reached into his pocket and pulled out the small velvet box, opening it to reveal the ring—a delicate, beautiful piece that caught the light just like her eyes.

"Anna," he said, his voice soft but filled with all the love he had carried for her over the years. "Will you marry me?"

For a moment, everything was silent. Anna stared at him, her eyes wide with shock and emotion. Then, slowly, her lips curved into a smile, tears filling her eyes as she nodded.

"Yes," she whispered, her voice trembling with joy. "Yes, Daniel, of course, I will."

Daniel felt his heart soar as he slipped the ring onto her finger, standing to pull her into his arms. She wrapped herself around him, holding him close as though she never wanted to let go. He could feel her heartbeat against his chest, strong and steady, matching his own.

As they stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, Daniel knew that this was the beginning of something even more beautiful than he had ever imagined. It wasn't just a promise for the future—it was the culmination of everything they had shared, from the quiet moments of longing in their youth to the deep, unwavering love they had built over the years.

The night sky stretched out above them, stars twinkling in the distance as if celebrating their union. And as they stood by the lake, hand in hand, Daniel knew with certainty that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together—stronger, more united than ever before.

The world felt right in that moment. And for the first time in a long time, Daniel allowed himself to dream not just of tomorrow, but of forever.
