Chapter 18 - Chapter 15: Feast of the Forgotten

The remnants of the Harbinger's corpse dissolved into a blackened sludge at Kaelis' feet, staining the chamber with the acrid scent of burnt flesh and decaying bones. The eerie silence that followed felt unnatural, as if the very air had turned its gaze toward them, watching, waiting. Lyra, bloodied but resolute, stood beside him, her breath shallow, every movement marked by the pain of her wounds.

"Is it over?" Lyra's voice wavered, her eyes scanning the desecrated remains of the Hellfire Chakra's last victim.

Kaelis, panting, wiped the gore from his weapon. He wanted to say yes, but something in the thick, suffocating darkness told him otherwise. The chamber, though now devoid of the frenzied screams of the damned, hummed with an unnatural energy, as though the ground itself pulsed with malevolent intent.

The floor beneath them shifted suddenly, like the earth itself was breathing. With a wet, sickening sound, the walls began to seep thick, oily rivulets of blood poured down, filling the cracks in the stone like veins feeding a grotesque beast. It wasn't over. Not yet.

"Move," Kaelis barked, yanking Lyra toward the dim passage ahead. Every instinct in his body screamed at him to flee, but even as they began to move, the chamber seemed to close in around them. The ground beneath their feet rippled, as though the stone itself had become flesh cold, throbbing, alive.

The passage led them into a nightmare. The ceiling dripped with what could only be described as living tissue fleshy strands hanging down, pulsating with sickening vitality. The walls twisted and warped, the stone seeming to writhe as though filled with trapped souls. Shadows flickered, not of their own creation, but from something darker that lurked in the peripheral, just beyond the edges of their sight.

As they ventured deeper, a sound broke the heavy silence a wet, gurgling noise, like meat being torn from bone. Kaelis and Lyra exchanged a glance, knowing that whatever awaited them was not just an obstacle but a trial of survival.

Ahead, the passage opened into a new chamber, but this one was different. Far more grotesque. The air here was dense with the smell of rot of death long fermented in the bowels of something ancient. Hanging from the ceiling were figures once human, their bodies now mutilated into horrific displays of suffering. Their limbs had been stretched unnaturally long, torsos torn open to reveal empty cavities where organs had once been. Their eyes, hollow and wide with eternal terror, followed the pair as they entered.

Lyra gagged, bile rising in her throat as her gaze fell upon one figure whose face had been peeled away, leaving behind only a slick, grinning skull. Its hands twitched, still clinging to the faint remnants of life, or something worse.

"What is this place?" Lyra whispered, her voice barely audible over the wet squelching sound coming from the center of the chamber.

A grotesque throne of flesh dominated the room's core, composed of writhing bodies melded together, their mouths sewn shut but still moaning in a chorus of muffled agony. Atop this horrific seat sat a creature larger than the Harbinger, more grotesque than anything they'd ever seen. It was a living nightmare. Its body was a twisted amalgamation of flesh and bone, its skin peeled back to reveal raw, exposed muscle. From its back sprouted jagged spikes, each adorned with impaled torsos remnants of past victims that still writhed in futile agony.

The creature's face was an abomination: eyeless, its gaping mouth stretched impossibly wide, filled with rows of razor-sharp teeth stained with blood and viscera. Thick ropes of saliva dripped from its maw as it feasted on something unidentifiable a mass of limbs and organs that had once been human, now reduced to little more than meat.

As Kaelis and Lyra approached, the creature stopped chewing, its maw snapping shut with a wet, echoing sound. It tilted its head toward them, as if sensing their presence with something other than sight. The bodies around it began to twitch, the grotesque choir growing louder as if feeding off the creature's attention.

"We're too late," Kaelis muttered. "This... thing is their god."

The creature rose from its throne with an unsettling grace, its towering form dwarfing them. It let out a low growl, a sound so deep it felt like it rattled their bones. The walls around them seemed to contract, closing in with every breath the beast took.

Without warning, the creature lunged. Its claws, dripping with dark ichor, swiped through the air with terrifying speed. Kaelis barely managed to dodge, the tip of its claws grazing his armor and tearing through it like paper. Lyra wasn't so lucky she was thrown back, slamming into the wall with a sickening thud, blood pouring from a deep gash in her side.

Kaelis charged, his weapon igniting in a blaze of hellish flame. He swung with all his might, aiming for the creature's neck. The blade connected, but instead of severing flesh, it glanced off, the creature's hide seemingly impervious to even the Hellfire Chakra. The creature let out a roar of laughter an unholy, guttural sound that reverberated through the chamber.

Lyra staggered to her feet, her breath labored. She clutched her side, blood pooling beneath her, but the fire in her eyes hadn't dimmed. With a snarl, she hurled one of her blades at the creature. It embedded itself in the beast's side, but it didn't even flinch.

Kaelis swung again, desperate to find a weakness. This time, the creature caught the blade in its hand, twisting it out of his grasp with an almost casual strength. It grabbed him by the throat, lifting him off the ground as if he weighed nothing. Kaelis struggled, gasping for breath as the creature's claws dug into his flesh, drawing blood.

Lyra, in a last-ditch effort, launched herself at the beast, her remaining blade slashing at its exposed back. But the creature barely noticed her attack. It was toying with them, savoring their desperation.

With a sickening crunch, the creature threw Kaelis across the chamber. He hit the ground hard, his vision blurring as pain exploded in his side. He could hear Lyra's voice, faint and distorted, calling his name, but it was drowned out by the sound of the creature's heavy footsteps approaching.

Just as the creature reached him, something shifted. Kaelis' vision cleared for a moment, and he saw it the altar. It stood behind the creature, barely visible through the writhing bodies that made up its throne. But unlike the previous altars, this one pulsed with a dark, living energy, feeding the creature, making it unstoppable.

He had to destroy it.

With a surge of adrenaline, Kaelis forced himself to his feet, grabbing the Hellfire Chakra from where it had fallen. He rushed forward, dodging the creature's swiping claws as he barreled past it, heading straight for the altar. The creature roared in fury, its massive form turning to follow him, but it was too late.

With a mighty swing, Kaelis brought the blade down on the altar. The impact sent a shockwave through the chamber, and the stone cracked, releasing a burst of dark energy that enveloped the room. The creature howled in pain, its body convulsing as the source of its power was severed.

The room erupted in chaos. The walls shook, the bodies hanging from the ceiling fell lifeless to the ground, and the creature's form began to disintegrate, its flesh melting away like wax in a fire. It let out one final, bloodcurdling scream before collapsing into a pile of ash and bone.

Kaelis collapsed beside the shattered altar, gasping for breath. Lyra limped over to him, her face pale but determined.

"It's done," she said, though her voice was tinged with uncertainty.

But even as the creature's remains smoldered on the ground, the air around them seemed to grow colder, darker. The whispers they had heard before returned, louder now, echoing off the chamber walls. And from the shadows, a new figure emerged tall, cloaked, and emanating an aura of power that made the previous horrors seem insignificant.

"You've only scratched the surface," the figure intoned, its voice like a chorus of the damned. "The true feast has yet to begin."

Kaelis and Lyra stared in horror, knowing that their nightmare had only just begun.
