Chapter 68 - Chapter 68: Echoes of the Forgotten

The group pressed onward, leaving the eerie plaza behind. The crystalline object Alina held glowed faintly, casting flickering light across their faces. The ancient city seemed alive around them, the walls shimmering with faint whispers that none of them could quite make out.

"This place feels like it's watching us," Selara muttered, her grip tight on her daggers.

"It probably is," Edric said, his tone far too casual for the tension in the air. "These ruins don't look like they've been empty for long. Something—or someone—left a mark here."

Alina walked ahead, her staff guiding her steps. The Eternal Flame pulsed in sync with the crystalline object, as though the two were communicating. The weight of her task pressed heavily on her, but she pushed forward. There was no turning back now.

They entered a narrow corridor, its walls etched with ancient symbols. The carvings glowed faintly as they passed, and the air was thick with energy. Alina ran her fingers along the walls, the symbols responding to her touch with brief flashes of light.

"These markings," she said, "they're older than anything I've ever seen. They feel... alive."

Darian frowned. "Alive isn't the word I'd use. Cursed feels more accurate."

Selara smirked. "Don't be so dramatic, Darian. If it were cursed, Edric would've tripped some kind of trap by now."

"Hey!" Edric protested. "I'll have you know I'm very careful when it comes to traps."

"You mean like the one you triggered back in the forest?" Selara shot back.

Before Edric could reply, the corridor opened into a vast chamber. The ceiling was high and arched, with beams of pale light streaming through cracks in the stone. In the center of the room was a raised platform, and on it stood a large, ornate door.

"That must be the way forward," Alina said, her eyes fixed on the door.

Darian stepped forward cautiously, his sword drawn. "And no doubt it's guarded by something. Stay alert."

As they approached the platform, the air grew colder. The light in the room dimmed, and a low rumble echoed around them. Shadows began to coalesce near the door, forming into a massive, humanoid shape.

The creature stood at least ten feet tall, its body composed of dark, swirling energy. Its eyes glowed like twin suns, and in its hand was a massive blade that seemed to hum with power.

"I knew it," Darian muttered. "There's always a guardian."

The creature stepped forward, its voice resonating through the chamber. "You who seek the secrets of the Forgotten, prove your worth or perish."

Alina stepped forward, holding the crystalline object high. "We don't want to fight you. We're here to restore balance, to end the darkness spreading across the land."

The creature's eyes flickered, but it didn't lower its weapon. "Words mean nothing. Only strength and resolve will open the path ahead."

The battle began with a deafening roar. The guardian swung its massive blade, the force of the strike shaking the ground. Darian met the attack head-on, his sword clashing with the creature's weapon in a burst of sparks.

Selara darted around the guardian, her daggers seeking weak points in its shadowy form. Each strike disrupted the creature's energy, but it seemed to regenerate almost instantly.

Edric hurled vials of fire and ice, the explosions momentarily staggering the guardian but doing little lasting damage. "This thing doesn't know when to quit!" he shouted.

"It's not just strength we need," Alina said, her staff glowing brightly. She closed her eyes, focusing on the connection between the Eternal Flame and the crystalline object. The two energies intertwined, forming a powerful resonance.

The guardian raised its blade for another strike, but Alina stepped forward, her staff radiating a blinding light. "Enough!" she commanded, her voice echoing through the chamber.

The light from her staff engulfed the room, and the guardian froze, its form flickering. The crystalline object in Alina's hand pulsed, sending a wave of energy through the chamber.

The guardian lowered its weapon, its glowing eyes fixed on Alina. "You have proven your resolve," it said. "The path is open to you. But beware—the trials ahead will test more than your strength. They will test your very soul."

With that, the guardian dissolved into mist, and the ornate door creaked open. Beyond it lay a staircase that spiraled downward into darkness.

The group stood in silence for a moment, catching their breath.

"Well," Edric said, breaking the tension, "that wasn't so bad."

Selara rolled her eyes. "You always say that after nearly getting us killed."

Darian sheathed his sword, his expression grim. "The guardian was right. Whatever's ahead will be worse than anything we've faced so far."

Alina tightened her grip on the crystalline object, her resolve unwavering. "Then we'll face it together. We've come too far to stop now."

With that, they descended the staircase, their steps echoing in the darkness as they prepared for the challenges yet to come.
