As dawn broke after a tumultuous night, Ale and his companions finally passed through the majestic gates of Eldoria. The city stretched out before them, bathed in the first light of the sun. The white stone buildings reflected the morning glow, creating an atmosphere both serene and vibrant.
Eldoria was a city of contrasts. To the northeast, Saint-Velarys housed the wealthy merchants, nobles, and the elite of society. The streets were lined with elegant manors, adorned with flourishing gardens and artistic fountains. Luxurious carriages roamed the streets, carrying well-dressed men and women in lavish attire.
In stark contrast, the northwest held the slums, where makeshift homes crowded together, forming a labyrinth of narrow alleys. Despite the apparent poverty, there was an undeniable energy in the air. Children's laughter echoed through the streets, and the tempting aromas of street vendors' food filled the air.
The city's center was dominated by the popular districts, where artisans, traders, and adventurers mingled. The markets were lively, with stalls overflowing with goods from across the Empire. The conversations, the cries of merchants advertising their wares, and the sounds of craftsmen hard at work created a unique urban symphony.
To the southeast lay the religious quarter, where towering cathedrals and temples reached for the sky, their spires dominating the horizon. Faithful pilgrims gathered for ceremonies, and sacred hymns echoed through the adjacent streets.
At the heart of the city was the main square, crowned by an imposing bell tower. This tower, a symbol of Eldoria, housed a clock whose chimes set the rhythm of life for the city's inhabitants. The square served as a gathering place, hosting festivals, markets, and important public announcements.
Dominating Eldoria, perched on a hill in the north-central part of the city, stood the imposing fortress of Viscount Alaric de Montclair. This stronghold watched over the city and its surroundings, a constant reminder of the local lord's power and authority.
Ale, amazed by the city's diversity and grandeur, turned to his companions. "Eldoria is even more impressive than I remember."
Bam, whose stomach growled loudly, exclaimed, "I'm so hungry! How about we head to a tavern, grab a good breakfast, and celebrate our victory from last night?"
Tim smiled. "Excellent idea. After everything we've been through, we've earned it."
Solia nodded in agreement. "I know a place in the artisan district that isn't too expensive. Let's go."
Ale accepted the invitation gladly. "Lead the way. It'll be a good chance for us to get to know each other better."
They made their way to a tavern called The Golden Griffin, a cozy establishment with walls adorned with colorful tapestries. The warm scent of freshly baked bread and stew filled the air.
Seated at a table near the window, they ordered a hearty breakfast: hot bread, cheese, cured meats, and a spiced warm drink.
Bam, mid-bite, started the conversation. "So, Ale, I was really impressed by your spells last night. You handle fire and earth magic so easily. Where did you learn all that?"
Tim chimed in, "Yeah, that's right. In the Empire of Valoria, only fire magic is taught. Other magics are either forbidden or reserved for the elite."
Ale took a moment to think. He couldn't reveal the truth about Nyxion, the Spirit of Darkness. No one would believe him, and it could cause trouble. He smiled slightly. "I grew up near the border. My grandfather used to take me to different regions to sell medicinal herbs. I had the chance to learn a variety of spells during our travels."
Solia looked at him with admiration. "That's incredible. You must have seen so much. I wish I could say the same."
Bam joyfully pounded the table. "That's awesome! Maybe you could teach us a few spells?"
Ale politely deflected. "Maybe one day. But for now, let's talk about you. How did you all become adventurers?"
Bam, ever enthusiastic, started first. "I come from a village not far from here. My father's a butcher, and ever since I was a kid, I've had this superhuman strength." He flexed his muscular arms. "I decided to become an adventurer so I could put this strength to good use. I'm what they call a tank—a warrior specialized in defense."
Tim took over. "I'm Bam's neighbor. I've always had great eyesight, and I loved shooting arrows. Bam encouraged me to become an archer so I could help protect our village. We joined the guild together."
Solia lowered her eyes slightly before speaking. "My story is a bit different. I was born into a wealthy family in the Saint-Velarys district here in Eldoria. I discovered I had a talent for magic and a pretty large mana reserve. I started studying at the temple in the religious quarter, where I learned the basics of magic and close combat."
She paused, her eyes reflecting a sadness that seemed to weigh on her. "My father was a wealthy merchant, but he lost everything when his ship sank at sea. With no resources, I had to leave school. Not long after that, my father… took his own life, leaving our family in poverty. To support them, I became an adventurer."
Ale felt a deep sense of empathy for her. "I'm sorry for your loss, Solia. You're incredibly brave to step up for your family like that."
She gave him a soft smile. "Thank you. I'm doing my best."
After a moment of respectful silence, Bam tried to lighten the mood. "Well, we make a pretty good team, don't we?"
Tim nodded. "That's true. And with you, Ale, we'd be even stronger."
Solia looked at Ale thoughtfully. "We were actually heading to the adventurer's guild to report on our mission. You should join us. You're the most powerful adventurer we've met so far. We could accomplish great things together."
Ale considered the idea. Joining the guild was tempting, but he had plans to visit the main market first.
"Thank you for the offer," he replied sincerely. "I need to go to the market first to look for information about my grandfather. But I'd be happy to meet up with you later."
Bam nodded eagerly. "Perfect! We'll wait for you at the guild. Come find us when you're ready."
Tim added, "If you need any help with your search, just let us know."
"I'll keep that in mind," Ale assured him.
After finishing their meal, they paid the bill. Solia, noticing Ale rummaging through his modest coin pouch, offered to cover his share.
"Consider it a thank you for your help last night," she said with a kind smile.
Ale politely declined. "That's kind of you, but I insist on paying my part."
They left the tavern and parted ways in front of the fountain in the central square.
"See you soon, Ale!" they called out in unison.
"See you soon," he replied, watching them walk away.
Now alone, Ale made his way toward the main market, his thoughts lingering on his new friends' offer. Joining the adventurer's guild could indeed be a valuable opportunity. He appreciated their company and had a growing sense that, together, they could achieve great things.
