Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: A Beautiful Place (rewrite)

The conversation between King Uther and Merlin took an unexpected turn. With a bitter expression, Uther turned to Merlin, his voice tinged with finality. "Well, this is my decision about the future. But there's one more thing I need to ask of you."

Merlin, sensing a foreboding shift in the atmosphere, prepared himself for whatever might come next. "Your Majesty, what else do you need?"

Before Merlin could fully grasp what was happening, King Uther, with a sudden movement, swung his fist and punched Merlin squarely in the cheek. "I've always wanted to punch that knowing face of yours," Uther said with a mix of frustration and amusement.

Merlin, taken aback but maintaining his composure, accepted the punch without protest. Uther's action, though surprising, seemed to release some of the king's pent-up emotions. "I guess you saw that coming. But it's done now, and I feel better," Uther remarked as he sat down on the ground.

"Alright, you can leave now. Thank you for all your hard work over the years. You may need to work even harder with Camelot's future. My health is failing, so if you have any plans, now is the time to act. Get ready," Uther said, his tone now more relaxed.

Merlin departed silently, leaving King Uther alone in his thoughts. As he gazed out, Uther mused quietly, "I, Uther Pendragon, should be considered a competent king."

A Beautiful Place

The next day, Morgan and Lott stood outside the city of Chalk, taking in the view. Morgan was enthusiastic as she pointed out the city's features to Lott. "Here is Chalk City. Yesterday, we came over in a carriage and prepared to confront the local tyrants. Today, let me show you around."

Morgan had kept Lott out for a bit longer than intended last night, but now, she seemed eager to explore the city together. Lott observed the city with curiosity. It wasn't large—only a few miles in circumference—compared to the grand cities of Rome or Chang'an. However, for Britain, it represented the pinnacle of their wisdom and civilization.

As the morning sun illuminated the city's white walls, Lott noticed the remnants of past sieges. The scars of battle were still evident, a testament to the city's enduring spirit.

The city gates were open, allowing a stream of civilians and merchants to enter. Lott admired the simple pleasures of daily life, reflecting on how happiness could be found in such ordinary scenes.

Morgan noticed Lott's peaceful demeanour and couldn't help but reflect on the differences in their perspectives. "You know, knights like us are accustomed to conflict and warfare. It's refreshing to see you appreciate the city's construction and the ordinary lives of its people."

Lott, meanwhile, found Morgan's jealousy amusing. The local girls had been showering him with flowers and glances, which Morgan found irritating. As they walked through the city, Morgan's mood was visibly sour, and Lott couldn't help but smile at her reactions.

Morgan's frustration was palpable as she grumbled, "Seriously, you're not going to comfort me after all this? You just find my jealousy amusing?"

Lott, chuckling to himself, enjoyed the playful side of their interactions. Morgan, sensing his amusement, tightened her grip on his hand and lifted it for all to see, proudly declaring their bond to onlookers.

Just then, Altria approached them, her face showing a mix of hope and dejection. "Your Majesty, Queen Morgan, do you need anything?"

Morgan saw through Altria's intentions immediately. "We're just enjoying a walk. But shouldn't you be on duty tonight? Our site only needs a few people for the city's defence."

Altria's eyes lit up, hopeful for a chance to switch duties. "Yes, but since it's my turn…"

Morgan, understanding Altria's plight, lightly patted her on the shoulder. "Well, since it's your duty, you should fulfil it properly. I'm counting on you."

Altria's face fell as she accepted her fate. "Yes, Your Highness," she said before walking away to fulfil her responsibilities.

With Altria gone, Lott and Morgan shared a moment of amusement. Lott's eyes sparkled with mischief, and Morgan's smirk mirrored his.

As they continued their stroll, they noticed two men in the distance, trying to hide their faces but failing miserably. One of them had a noticeable bruise near his eye, and they seemed to be in quite a predicament.

Morgan and Lott exchanged a knowing glance. The two men's attempts at concealment were as futile as trying to hide from a pair of keen observers. It was clear they were involved in something less than honourable, and their appearance only confirmed their discomfort.

As the day unfolded, the dynamic between Morgan and Lott continued to evolve, reflecting the complexities of their relationship and the challenges they faced in the world around them.
