Chapter 4: A Midnight Encounter

The village inn was quiet, the soft sound of crickets and distant rustling leaves the only noise Ryu could hear as he lay awake, staring at the ceiling. His mind was racing, too full of thoughts to sleep. The events of the day—arriving in this new world, battling creatures, and learning about the looming threat of the **Devourer**—kept replaying in his head.

After what felt like hours of tossing and turning, he gave up. Sliding quietly out of bed, he dressed and stepped outside, letting the cool night air wash over him. The village was peaceful, bathed in the light of two pale moons hanging low in the sky. It was a strange yet beautiful sight, and for a moment, Ryu almost forgot the danger that lurked in this world.

His feet carried him toward the outskirts of Eldryn, where the forest met the village's borders. The shadows of the trees stretched long and dark under the moonlight, creating an eerie but somehow calming atmosphere.

As he wandered, lost in thought, Ryu suddenly bumped into someone. He stumbled back, surprised, and looked up to see a man standing before him.

The man was tall and cloaked, his face obscured by a hood. His eyes, however, gleamed unnaturally in the moonlight, and Ryu instinctively tensed.

"My apologies," Ryu said, taking a step back. He wasn't looking for trouble, especially not in the middle of the night.

The man, however, didn't seem hostile. He smiled faintly and waved a hand. "No harm done," he said in a soft, almost melodic voice. "In fact, I'd say our meeting is quite fortuitous."

Ryu's guard went up. Fortuitous? He wasn't sure what to make of this stranger. "I was just out for a walk," he said carefully. "I should probably be getting back."

But before he could turn to leave, the man stepped forward, his gaze intent. "Stay a moment," he said. "Why not walk with me a while? We could both use some company on a quiet night like this."

Ryu hesitated. Every instinct told him to decline. Something about this man felt... off. But before he could refuse, a sudden chime echoed in his ears, and a translucent system window appeared before his eyes.

**System Notification:**

- **New Side Quest Unlocked: The Mysterious Stranger**

- **Quest Type:** Solo

- **Objective:** Walk with the stranger and uncover his true identity

- **Rewards:** ???

- **Warning:** This quest is solo and cannot be shared with party members.

---

Ryu's eyes widened as he read the notification. A side quest? And a solo one at that? His first instinct was to reject it—something about this entire situation screamed danger. But then again, his curiosity was piqued. Side quests often offered rare rewards, and there was no telling what he might gain from this encounter.

After a moment's pause, Ryu nodded, albeit reluctantly. "Alright," he said. "I'll walk with you."

The man's smile deepened, though it didn't quite reach his eyes. "Good choice," he said softly. "Let's walk."

They began moving through the village, their steps quiet on the dirt path as they walked in the direction of the forest. Ryu kept his distance, not entirely trusting the stranger, but curious nonetheless. The man's presence was strange—there was something otherworldly about him that Ryu couldn't quite place.

"So," Ryu began cautiously, "who are you?"

The man chuckled lightly. "Names are fleeting things," he said cryptically. "But you may call me Alaric."

Ryu frowned. "And what do you want with me?"

Alaric glanced at him, his eyes shimmering under the moonlight. "You're not like the others," he said. "Not yet, at least. You haven't fully accepted your role, have you?"

"My role?" Ryu repeated, his hand instinctively brushing against the hilt of his katana. "You mean being chosen by a god? How do you know about that?"

Alaric's smile widened. "I know many things, young one. More than you might expect."

They continued walking in silence for a few moments, the village fading into the background as they ventured deeper into the forest. Ryu's senses were on high alert now. He wasn't sure what Alaric was playing at, but he wasn't about to let his guard down.

"I've seen many like you," Alaric continued, his voice taking on a more serious tone. "Chosen by gods, thrust into worlds they don't understand, given powers they can't fully control. Some rise to the challenge, become legends. Others… fall."

Ryu's eyes narrowed. "And which do you think I'll be?"

Alaric stopped walking and turned to face him, his gaze intense. "That depends on you," he said quietly. "The power you've been given is immense, but it's also dangerous. The gods may have chosen you, but it's up to you to decide what kind of hero you'll become."

Ryu stared back at him, feeling the weight of those words. He knew Alaric was right. The power of **Sol Commander** was still new to him, and while he had been able to wield it effectively in battle, he hadn't fully grasped its potential—or its consequences.

"What do you want from me, Alaric?" Ryu asked, his voice steady. "Why are you telling me this?"

Alaric tilted his head slightly. "Consider it… advice," he said, his tone shifting once more to something almost playful. "After all, you'll need all the help you can get if you're going to survive what's coming."

Ryu's heart skipped a beat. "What's coming?"

Alaric didn't answer. Instead, he took a step back, his form beginning to shimmer and blur around the edges as if he were fading into the night itself.

"Keep your eyes open, Ryu," he said, his voice growing distant. "There are forces at play here far greater than you realize. And not all of them are on your side."

With that, Alaric vanished, leaving Ryu standing alone in the dark forest, the only sound the whisper of the wind through the trees.

**System Notification:**

- **Quest Complete: The Mysterious Stranger**

- **Rewards Unlocked: 500 XP, Rare Item - Alaric's Mark**

---

A new system window appeared, this time showing a small, glowing insignia in the shape of a crescent moon. **Alaric's Mark** had been added to his inventory, though its description was vague. All it said was that the mark could be used once, but its purpose remained a mystery.

Ryu stared at the mark for a moment before closing the window and turning back toward the village. Whatever this encounter had been, it wasn't over. Alaric had given him a warning—and perhaps a gift—but what it all meant remained to be seen.

For now, Ryu would keep the mark close and stay vigilant. The path ahead was growing more uncertain by the minute, and he had a feeling that Alaric wouldn't be the last strange figure to cross his path.

As he made his way back to the inn, one thought lingered in his mind: just what kind of hero was he destined to become?
