Chapter 9 - Chapter 9: Under the Lamplight

As the soft afternoon light filtered through the café's windows, Daisy's animated chatter filled the space between her and Ferdinand. They had been sitting together for hours, their conversation effortlessly flowing from one topic to the next. Daisy, in particular, had found herself opening up in ways she hadn't anticipated. Her initial nervousness had dissolved, replaced by a sense of ease that she rarely experienced with anyone else.

Ferdinand, on the other hand, remained a calm and attentive listener. He ate slowly, savoring each bite of his breakfast while Daisy, with her characteristic enthusiasm, had long since finished hers. She hadn't even realized how quickly the time had passed until she glanced at her phone and saw the time—3:00 PM. Her eyes widened in surprise, and she paused mid-sentence.

"Oh my goodness, it's already 3 PM!" she exclaimed, her voice tinged with disbelief. "I can't believe we've been here this long. I've just been blabbering on and on."

Ferdinand looked at her, a small smile playing on his lips. His calm demeanor was almost soothing in contrast to Daisy's sudden realization. "Time does seem to have flown by," he remarked, his voice gentle. "But I've enjoyed every moment."

Daisy blushed at his words, feeling a warm flush creep up her neck and settle on her cheeks. She wasn't used to someone making her feel so… seen. There was something about Ferdinand that made her feel like she could be herself, without the fear of being judged or misunderstood.

As Daisy tried to gather her thoughts, Ferdinand subtly gestured for the waiter from under the table. It was a small, discreet motion that caught the waiter's attention without interrupting Daisy's flow of conversation. When the waiter approached, Ferdinand handed him his card, along with a small note he had written earlier. The note read: *If she asks to pay the bill, please tell her it's on the house.*

The waiter nodded in understanding, taking the card and the note without a word. Ferdinand then turned his attention back to Daisy, who had started talking again, albeit with a bit more restraint than before.

"I just… I can't believe we've spent the whole day together," Daisy said, her voice softening. "I didn't even realize how much time had passed. I've never really done this before, you know? Just spent an entire day with someone, talking and getting to know them."

Ferdinand's smile widened slightly, his gaze warm as he looked at her. "I'm glad we did," he said simply.

There was a brief pause as the waiter returned, placing the receipt discreetly in front of Ferdinand without making a sound. Daisy, noticing the waiter nearby, instinctively reached for her bag.

"Oh, let me get the bill," she said quickly.

The waiter smiled politely. "It's on the house, ma'am," he said, echoing the words Ferdinand had written in his note.

Daisy blinked, taken aback. "Really? That's… so kind of them."

Ferdinand's expression remained neutral, though there was a hint of amusement in his eyes. "It seems we've been lucky today," he said, his tone light.

Daisy smiled, though she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. But before she could dwell on it, Ferdinand leaned forward slightly, his gaze steady. "How about we continue this day with some ice cream?" he suggested, his voice carrying a hint of anticipation.

Daisy's eyes lit up at the idea. "Ice cream sounds perfect!" she agreed, her earlier doubts forgotten in the excitement of continuing their time together.

As they stood up to leave, Ferdinand took out his phone, typing a quick message to a friend. The message was brief but clear: *Meet me at the ice cream place with the bouquet.* His friend responded with a thumbs-up emoji, confirming the plan. Ferdinand added a follow-up message: *Also, please pay for the ice cream.*

They walked out of the café, the afternoon sun warm against their faces. The streets of the university campus were quieter now, with most students having retreated to their dorms or the library. As they walked, Ferdinand and Daisy fell into a comfortable silence, each lost in their own thoughts.

For Daisy, the day felt almost surreal. Here she was, walking side by side with a man who, just days ago, had been a complete stranger. Yet now, there was a connection between them, something unspoken but undeniably present. She couldn't help but steal glances at Ferdinand, noticing the way the sunlight played off his features, highlighting the sharp angles of his jaw and the softness in his eyes.

A fleeting thought crossed her mind—a vision of a future where they were more than just acquaintances, more than just two people who had met by chance. It was a thought that she quickly pushed away, embarrassed by the sudden rush of emotions. She barely knew him, after all. But still, the thought lingered, refusing to be completely dismissed.

Ferdinand, meanwhile, was equally lost in thought. As they walked, he was aware of Daisy's presence beside him, the warmth of her energy, the way she seemed to light up everything around her. There was something about her that intrigued him, something that made him want to know more, to peel back the layers and discover the person beneath the surface.

They arrived at the ice cream parlor, a quaint little shop nestled at the corner of the campus. The inside was cool and inviting, with rows of brightly colored ice cream flavors displayed behind a glass case. The air was filled with the sweet scent of vanilla and chocolate, mixed with the faint aroma of freshly baked waffle cones.

Ferdinand held the door open for Daisy, who stepped inside with a grateful smile. They approached the counter, where the server greeted them with a cheerful smile. "What can I get for you today?"

Ferdinand turned to Daisy. "What would you like?" he asked.

Daisy scanned the array of flavors, her eyes wide with indecision. "Oh, I don't know," she admitted with a laugh. "There are so many choices!"

Ferdinand waited patiently, his gaze soft as he watched her deliberate. After a few moments, Daisy finally made her choice. "I think I'll go with the pistachio," she said, her voice tinged with excitement.

Ferdinand nodded. "I'll have the same," he told the server, who quickly scooped up two generous portions of the creamy green ice cream and handed them their cones.

They found a small table near the window, the same corner where Ferdinand's friend had already placed the bouquet. Daisy's eyes widened in surprise when she saw it—a beautiful arrangement of flowers in vibrant colors, sitting on the table as if waiting for her.

"Ferdinand… did you…?" Daisy began, her voice trailing off as she looked at him.

Ferdinand smiled, his expression calm and warm. "I thought it would be a nice touch," he said simply, gesturing for her to sit.

Daisy blushed, her heart fluttering at the thoughtfulness of his gesture. She took a seat, carefully placing the bouquet on the table in front of her. "Thank you," she said softly, her eyes meeting his.

They ate their ice cream in companionable silence, the sweetness of the treat mingling with the soft warmth of the afternoon sun streaming through the window. Daisy couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment as she sat there, savoring both the moment and the company.

As they finished their ice cream, Ferdinand glanced out the window, noting the way the sun was beginning to dip toward the horizon. "Would you like to watch the sunset?" he asked, his voice gentle.

Daisy's eyes lit up at the suggestion. "I'd love that," she replied, her earlier shyness completely forgotten in the warmth of the moment.

They left the ice cream parlor and made their way back to the bench where they had first crossed paths. The campus was bathed in the golden light of the setting sun, the colors of the sky shifting from soft pinks to deep oranges and purples. It was a breathtaking sight, one that seemed to hold the promise of something more.

Ferdinand and Daisy sat together on the bench, their shoulders brushing as they watched the sun slowly dip below the horizon. The world around them seemed to fade away, leaving just the two of them in a bubble of quiet contentment.

For Daisy, the moment felt almost magical, as if time had slowed down just for them. She turned to Ferdinand, her heart swelling with gratitude for this day, for the unexpected connection they had formed.

"Thank you for today," she said softly, her voice barely more than a whisper.

Ferdinand turned to her, his gaze steady and warm. "Thank you, Daisy," he replied, his voice filled with sincerity. "For the breakfast, and for your company. I can't remember the last time I've enjoyed a day like this."

Daisy smiled, her heart feeling light as a feather. They sat in silence for a while longer, watching as the last rays of the sun disappeared from the sky, leaving behind a deep, velvety blue.

Eventually, Ferdinand stood up, offering his hand to help Daisy to her feet. "Let me walk you to your dorm," he offered, his voice low and comforting.

Daisy hesitated for a moment, then took his hand, feeling a warmth spread through her at the contact. "I'd like that," she said, her voice soft.

They walked side by side through the quiet campus, the night air cool and crisp around them. Daisy felt a sense of calm wash over her as they made their way to her dorm, the day's events still fresh in her mind.

When they reached the entrance to her building, Daisy paused, turning to face Ferdinand. The light from the nearby lamppost cast a soft glow on her features, highlighting the gentle smile that played on her lips. She felt an unexpected pang of sadness at the thought of the day coming to an end.

"This was… really special," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "I don't think I've ever had a day quite like this before."

Ferdinand smiled, his gaze holding hers with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat. "I'm glad," he replied, his tone sincere. "Today was… more than I expected too."

There was a moment of silence between them, a comfortable pause that seemed to stretch out, filled with unspoken words and emotions. Daisy could feel her heart pounding in her chest, a mixture of excitement and nervousness swirling inside her. She didn't want to say goodbye just yet, but she wasn't sure how to prolong the moment without it feeling forced.

Ferdinand, sensing her hesitation, took a small step closer, his eyes never leaving hers. "Would you… like to do this again sometime?" he asked, his voice low and filled with a hopeful vulnerability that made Daisy's breath catch.

She nodded, a smile spreading across her face. "I'd love to," she said softly, her voice filled with genuine warmth.

Ferdinand's smile widened, a look of relief and contentment washing over his features. He reached out, gently taking her hand in his, giving it a light squeeze. "Then it's a date," he said, his voice carrying a note of finality that seemed to solidify the promise between them.

Daisy's heart fluttered at his words, the simple gesture of holding hands sending a wave of warmth through her. She squeezed his hand in return, feeling a sense of connection that she hadn't expected to find in such a short amount of time.

They stood there for a few more moments, neither of them wanting to break the spell that had settled over them. Eventually, though, Ferdinand released her hand, taking a small step back. "I should let you get some rest," he said, his tone gentle.

Daisy nodded, though part of her wanted to protest, to ask him to stay just a little longer. But she knew he was right—the day had been long, and they both needed time to process everything that had happened. "Goodnight, Ferdinand," she said, her voice soft.

"Goodnight, Daisy," he replied, his gaze lingering on hers for just a moment longer before he turned to walk away.

Daisy watched him go, her heart feeling full and light at the same time. She stood there for a few moments, watching his figure disappear into the night, before finally turning to enter her dorm. As she made her way to her room, a smile played on her lips, the events of the day replaying in her mind like a beautiful dream.

When she finally reached her room and closed the door behind her, she leaned against it, letting out a soft sigh. The day had been nothing short of magical, and as she prepared for bed, she couldn't help but wonder what the future held for her and Ferdinand. Whatever it was, she knew one thing for certain—she was looking forward to finding out.

With that thought in mind, Daisy slipped into bed, a sense of contentment washing over her as she drifted off to sleep, the memory of the day's events lingering in her dreams.
