Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Free Territories

The predawn air was thick with anticipation as Akuma and Selene made their final preparations. The mission ahead was no simple raid; it was a strike against the very heart of the Pantheon's influence. The Eclipse Shard, a relic rumored to sever divine ties, had the potential to shift the balance of power. Yet Akuma remained wary of his new companions, especially Selene, whose stoic demeanor masked an unreadable intent.

The journey to the Free Territories was treacherous. As they descended from the Abyssal Fringe into the contested lands, Akuma noted the stark changes in the environment. Jagged cliffs gave way to sprawling plains littered with the remnants of ancient battles. The Free Territories were a patchwork of desolation and life—a fragile haven for those who defied the Pantheon.

Selene broke the silence as they traveled. "You've fought many battles, haven't you?"

Akuma glanced at her, his expression guarded. "More than I care to count. Why?"

"Because you carry yourself like a blade—sharp and unyielding, but brittle if pressed too far."

Kuro growled, padding closer to Akuma, its fiery eyes narrowing at Selene. Akuma smirked. "Careful, Selene. You might cut yourself."

Selene's molten gaze flickered with amusement, but she said nothing further.

By nightfall, they reached the outskirts of the Pantheon-controlled outpost. It was a fortress carved into the cliffs, illuminated by the faint glow of divine wards. The air hummed with power, a tangible reminder of the Pantheon's reach.

Selene knelt, surveying the stronghold. "The Shard is likely in the central sanctum. The wards around it will be strongest."

Akuma crossed his arms. "And the guards?"

"Elite Paladins. Champions imbued with the Pantheon's blessings. They'll be faster, stronger, and more disciplined than the usual rabble."

Akuma's smirk widened. "Sounds like a decent challenge. What's the plan?"

Selene unsheathed twin daggers, their edges glinting with dark energy. "We move swiftly and quietly. Avoid unnecessary fights. You take point."

Akuma nodded, the shadowflame in his veins simmering with anticipation. "Let's get this over with."

The duo moved like wraiths through the outer defenses. Akuma's shadowflame cloaked them in an unnatural silence, and Selene's movements were impossibly fluid, as if she danced with the shadows. Together, they neutralized sentries with ruthless efficiency.

As they neared the central sanctum, the wards grew oppressive, their divine energy prickling Akuma's skin. Selene paused, her voice a whisper. "The wards are too strong to bypass. We'll need to disable the glyphs at their anchor points."

Akuma raised an eyebrow. "And where are these anchor points?"

Selene pointed to three glowing symbols etched into the fortress walls. "There, there, and inside the main hall."

Akuma grunted. "Of course, it's never easy."

The first two glyphs were disabled without incident, but as they approached the third, the sanctum doors burst open, revealing a squad of Paladins. Their armor gleamed with divine radiance, and their leader, a towering figure wielding a golden halberd, stepped forward.

"Intruders," he bellowed, his voice reverberating with divine authority. "You dare defile this sacred place?"

Akuma stepped forward, his shadowflame flaring. "Sacred? All I see is another monument to tyranny."

The Paladin leader raised his weapon. "Then face the Pantheon's judgment!"

The battle was chaos. Akuma charged into the fray, his fists wreathed in shadowflame. "Abyssal Wrath!" The force of his attack sent two Paladins sprawling, their divine armor scorched by his flames.

Selene moved like a phantom, her daggers finding gaps in the Paladins' defenses. Together, they pushed the squad back, but the leader proved a formidable opponent. His halberd struck with blinding speed, forcing Akuma to summon "Eternal Veil" to absorb the impact.

"You fight well for a heretic," the leader snarled, his halberd crackling with divine energy. "But your shadowflame will falter against the light!"

Akuma's grin was feral. "Let's test that theory." He unleashed "Infernal Laceration," a blade of shadowflame that carved through the air, narrowly missing the leader but forcing him to retreat.

Selene took advantage of the opening, hurling a dagger imbued with dark energy. It struck the glyph on the sanctum wall, shattering it and dispelling the ward. The leader roared in fury as the sanctum trembled.

With the wards down, Akuma and Selene entered the sanctum. At its center, the Eclipse Shard floated within a column of light, its surface shimmering like a fractured mirror. The relic pulsed with a power that seemed to repel even Akuma's shadowflame.

Selene approached cautiously. "This is it. The Pantheon's connection to their champions is rooted in their divine link. If we can sever it—"

A blinding light filled the room as the Paladin leader burst in, his armor cracked but his resolve unshaken. "You will not leave with that relic!"

Akuma turned, his shadowflame erupting in a towering inferno. "Try and stop me."

The ensuing battle was fierce, but Akuma's overwhelming power, combined with Selene's precision, proved too much for the Paladin leader. As he fell, his golden halberd shattered, the divine energy within dissipating.

Selene secured the Eclipse Shard, wrapping it in a cloth to suppress its energy. "We need to leave. Now."

Akuma nodded, exhaustion beginning to weigh on him. Together, they fled the sanctum, the fortress crumbling behind them.

Back at the Shadowed Council's base, the relic was placed within a warded chamber. The council leader regarded Akuma and Selene with approval. "You've done well. This is a significant blow to the Pantheon."

Akuma crossed his arms. "Don't celebrate yet. They'll retaliate."

The leader nodded. "And when they do, we must be ready. But tonight, we've taken a step toward liberation."

As the council dispersed, Selene approached Akuma. "You fought well today. Perhaps there's more to you than rage and fire."

Akuma smirked. "And maybe you're not as cold as you pretend to be."

For the first time, Selene smiled faintly. "Don't get used to it."
