Chapter 7 - Days end.

As Jacob and Zuri walked toward the study, a sudden thought struck Zuri. She paused, glancing at Jacob with a kind expression. "You know, your clothes are quite dirty after your... adventures. Why don't you freshen up first?"

Jacob nodded in agreement. The last few days had been a whirlwind, and he realized he could use the time to wash away the grime of his past.

Zuri led him to the washroom, a modest structure that appeared old but was surprisingly well-maintained. The air was filled with the refreshing scent of soap, and several large buckets brimming with crystal-clear water stood ready for use. In one corner, a neat pile of clean clothes awaited him, neatly folded and clearly prepared with care.

He couldn't help but think how thoughtful Zuri was, her kindness a stark contrast to the chaos he had faced. He quickly shed his dirty clothes and stepped into the cool water, feeling the tension of his journey dissolve with each splash. The invigorating bath was a much-needed respite, a moment of clarity amid the confusion of his new world.

As he bathed, his mind wandered to the plans he needed to formulate. First and foremost, he resolved to learn the language spoken in this strange realm. Books would be his primary resource, a way to bridge the gap between him and the inhabitants of this world. He imagined the possibilities: reading, writing, and eventually communicating verbally.

After washing away the remnants of his ordeal, he dressed in the simple yet comfortable cotton shirt and pants Zuri had left for him. The fabric felt soft against his skin, a welcome change that bolstered his spirits.

When he stepped out of the washroom, Jacob made his way back to the study Zuri had mentioned. The room was simple, furnished with a sturdy chair and a table, and lined with shelves brimming with books. Each tome was a treasure trove waiting to be explored.

His eyes fell on a few portraits hanging on the wall. One depicted an older man with a warm smile alongside a woman he assumed was his wife. Another showed a younger Zuri with a couple who must have been her parents. The man in that portrait bore an air of heroism, his long locks flowing, while the woman radiated elegance with her hair styled in a delicate bun.

Curiosity propelled him to the shelves, where he randomly selected a book, its cover worn from use. With a mix of trepidation and excitement, he opened it and began to sound out the words. To his surprise, he grasped some of the meanings, his mind working to connect the sounds to the language he desperately needed to learn.

It was a history book, detailing the region he found himself in—the Purple Mountain Region. The information unfolded slowly as he painstakingly sounded out each word. He discovered that this land was ruled by the Bear Mammoth Kingdom, a realm governed by three schools, five houses, and two merchant organizations. At the top of this hierarchy sat the royal Jaru family, who had held power for over three hundred years. Some of the families were even older, boasting histories that stretched back over two centuries.

Hours passed without him noticing, absorbed in the world of words and stories. Just as fatigue began to set in, Zuri's voice broke through the silence of the study. "Jacob, it's time for supper!"

The invitation brought him back to the present, and he felt a mix of anticipation and hunger surge through him. He carefully closed the book, his mind racing with new knowledge, and followed the sound of her voice, eager to join her for a meal and share in the warmth of companionship once more.

He stepped into the dining area, where the aroma of cooked food filled the air, promising a comforting end to a day of unexpected changes.

As Jacob entered, he felt a sense of belonging, a fleeting hope that perhaps, in this strange land, he could find his place.### Chapter 8: A New Home

Jacob sat at the small dining table as Zuri served him a savory meat dish, the aroma wrapping around him like a warm embrace. The meal was accompanied by a colorful array of vegetables, each bite bursting with flavor. It was a simple but satisfying feast, a far cry from the chaos he had faced in the forest and the uncertainty of his situation.

As he ate, Jacob's mind flickered back to the study and the books that held the key to his understanding of this world. Although the reading had been challenging, he had managed to grasp a few words, including his own name. Gathering his courage, he formed the words with great effort, his accent thick and his syntax clumsy. "My name is Jacob. Thank you for the meal."

Zuri and the old man exchanged astonished looks, clearly not expecting him to speak at all. Zuri broke into laughter, her eyes sparkling with delight. "It's no problem, Jacob! I'm happy to cook for you, and I'm glad the study helped you."

The old man, who had been quietly observing, leaned forward with a curious expression. "So the kid was using the study to learn how to speak," he mused to himself, a glimmer of respect forming in his gaze. "I guess he really doesn't know how to speak before. What a strange kid."

After Jacob finished his meal, Zuri stood up, brushing crumbs from her hands. "Well, since you're done eating, let me show you to where you'll be sleeping."

Confusion washed over Jacob's face. He had assumed he would sleep in the barn, a leftover thought from the circumstances that had brought him here.

Zuri caught his expression and chuckled softly. "We won't let you sleep in the barn. The old man was just overly cautious at first." The old man joined in the laughter, the atmosphere lightening with their shared humor.

She led Jacob to a small room at the end of the hall. The door creaked open to reveal a cozy space, surprisingly neat and inviting. "It's not much," she said, glancing around the room as if to assure herself, "but I made sure it's very comfortable."

Jacob stepped inside, his heart swelling with gratitude. The bed was made with a clean, soft blanket, and he could tell she had put in effort to create a welcoming environment. This level of kindness reminded him of Mr. and Mrs. Will, the only people who had shown him such compassion before.

With another attempt at broken language, Jacob managed to say, "Thank you, Zuri."

Zuri's smile was radiant. "You're welcome," she replied, her voice warm as she stepped back. The scent of her lingering perfume filled the room, a soft reminder of her presence.

After she left, Jacob stood in the small space, reflecting on the day's events. He felt a sense of peace that he hadn't experienced in a long time. As he settled onto the bed, the comfort enveloping him, thoughts swirled in his mind about the journey ahead.

Tomorrow, he decided, he would use a piece of paper to help with his translations, making the reading process faster and more manageable. He also wanted to explore the study further, specifically searching for books on martial arts from not just this kingdom but the world beyond.

With his plans taking shape, he closed his eyes, allowing the fatigue of the day to wash over him. Sleep claimed him quickly, a refuge where dreams of understanding and strength awaited.
