Once the plane took off, Katelynn stared out at the city she had called home for over 20 years. Maybe she'd never return. The memories were too heavy to carry, and she didn't want to revisit them. Like she did with L, she was leaving it all behind.
Closing her eyes, her thoughts drifted back, and without realizing it, tears began to fall.
"Katelynn?" A soft voice beside her broke through. A hand holding a tissue appeared in front of her.
For a brief second, she thought it was L, and a wave of fear and hope surged through her. She still wished it could be her.
Turning her head, Katelynn saw a short-haired girl whose face seemed familiar, though her mind was too full of L to place her.
"Who are you?" Katelynn asked, her tears staining her pants.
"Here, wipe them away," the girl said, offering the tissue closer.
