Chapter 1 - The Crypt

As dawn's first light breaks upon the ancient forest shrouding the village of Greystone, pale sunlight filters through the dense canopy. Nestled within a secluded valley, Greystone's lofty wooden palisades stand resolute against the lurking perils of the wilderness. Once alive with the hustle and bustle of daily life, the village now lies silent beneath a heavy shroud of apprehension. The air is thick with the scent of woodsmoke and mist, intertwined with a more sinister aroma—death.

The past year has been unkind to the town. Crops have withered in the fields, and livestock have fallen victim to a mysterious illness, the poor animals twisted and drained of blood. The villagers, too, have begun to suffer. A fever unlike any seen before has taken hold, leaving many pale and lifeless. Rumors of restless spirits and dark omens have spread like wildfire, casting a profound shadow over the hearts of Greystone's inhabitants.

"It's no use…" sighed Father Lucien, the village healer, tightening his arms as he knelt down to pray inside the church.

"Dear God, please guide me in what I'm about to do. I can't let any more people be taken from their lives. Show me a sign, I beg of you," he whispered, his eyes slowly lifting towards the altar.

In the blink of an eye, a loud crash of lightning burst from the outside, and a chilly breeze swept into the church, almost extinguishing Father Lucien's lantern. He barely noticed the chaos around him until a book tumbled from the shelves, catching his attention and intriguing him. He slowly approached the fallen book, and from a short distance, he could make out the title: "The Curse of the Crypt." Intrigued, Father Lucien picked it up, feeling a sense of foreboding as he wondered what secrets it might reveal.

After another restless night, in the silent hours, Father Lucien resolved to venture to the crypt's location detailed in the book, said to be at the village's edge. He remembered the notes about an ancient curse and sought to unearth the truth. As he arrived at the crypt's entrance and descended into the cold, damp depths, the stench of decay grew overpowering. The flickering flame of his lantern cast eerie shadows on walls lined with the bones of their ancestors.

"Dear God, save me from these bad omens. Be my guide." prayed Father Lucien.

As the prayer left his lips, an unnatural movement caught his eye. Bodies once lifeless now stirred with an abomination of life, rising from the ground. Their eyes, which should have remained sealed in eternal rest, glowed with an unholy hunger. The dead had risen from their graves, driven by a dark force that defied the natural order.

Reaching for his dagger, one of the undead lunged at Father Lucien's legs, tearing a chunk of flesh. He swiftly slashed at its head, sending it flying away from him. Without a moment's hesitation, he turned and fled the crypt. As he emerged into the open air, a chilling realization washed over him—a curse had been unleashed upon Greystone.

As Father Lucien raced back to Greystone, he was unaware that the undead were following him, dragging the village deeper into chaos.

"Everyone! Run! Save yourselves! They're here!" he screamed as he dashed through the main alley, heading towards the forest.

When the undead reached the town, the villagers sent their best to confront them, but for every one that fell, three more rose in its place. Despair mounted, and the village elder sent out a distress call. Messengers fled the dying village, seeking anyone who could help. Would they find a savior?
