Chereads / Phantom Smash : Rise Of The Badminton Prodigy / Chapter 5 - Unraveling the System

Chapter 5 - Unraveling the System

Victory hung in the air, but the weight of it settled heavily on Arjun's shoulders as he walked home after the match with Raghav. The taste of success should have been sweet, yet something felt off. As he moved through the dimly lit streets, a nagging thought persisted in his mind—how much longer could he rely on the Phantom Shuttle System before it demanded more from him?

Once home, Arjun dropped his bag by the door and collapsed onto his bed, staring at the ceiling. Phantom had been silent since the match ended, no new missions, no words of advice. It felt strange, like a calm before the storm.

As he lay there, a notification popped up, breaking the silence:

**System Status: Reflex Enhancement Level 2 Activated. Speed: Level 1.**

Arjun sighed. "I've gotten stronger, but… why does it feel like I'm not in control?"

Just as the thought crossed his mind, the system chimed in, breaking the quiet:

"Your concern is understandable, Arjun. The system is designed to enhance your abilities, but it requires complete commitment. You've only unlocked the first tier of power. There's much more to uncover."

Arjun sat up, his heart racing. "More? What are you talking about? I've already pushed myself to the limit. Raghav was tough, but I won. What more do you want from me?"

Phantom's voice remained calm. "The opponents you've faced so far are only the beginning. There are stronger players out there—far more skilled than Kabir or Raghav. You must prepare for what's to come."

Arjun felt a chill run down his spine. "Stronger? Who are they?"

A new screen flashed before him, displaying several blurred-out profiles, their names and faces hidden. Only one was clear—Kabir Malik.

**Upcoming Challenges: Kabir Malik (Junior State Champion), Unknown (National Level), Unknown (International)**

"Your next opponent is Kabir once again," Phantom explained. "This time, in a sanctioned tournament. You must defeat him to advance further. But beware—he is improving rapidly."

Arjun clenched his fists. "A tournament? I'm not even registered for any tournaments."

"You will be," Phantom replied. "Your name is already entered."

Arjun froze. "What? You registered me?"

The system didn't respond to his question directly. "You have three days to prepare. I suggest training with intensity. Kabir will not hold back this time."

### The Next Morning

Arjun arrived at the badminton club early, long before anyone else had shown up. The match against Raghav still echoed in his mind, but now, the looming threat of Kabir's rematch weighed heavier. He was improving too fast—it wasn't just Arjun who was leveling up. Kabir was a natural, and with more time, his progress would be dangerous.

He began his practice drills, focusing on footwork, speed, and accuracy. With each strike, he tried to push himself beyond what his body could handle, knowing the system would back him up. But as the hours passed, he couldn't shake the growing sense of dread.

Suddenly, a familiar voice snapped him out of his thoughts.

"Training hard, huh?" Sia called from across the court, walking toward him with a smile. "You've been unstoppable lately."

Arjun wiped the sweat from his forehead and smiled, though it didn't reach his eyes. "Yeah, just trying to stay sharp. Kabir's no joke."

Sia raised an eyebrow. "You think Kabir's a problem? You've already beaten him once."

Arjun hesitated, glancing down at his racket. "I don't know, Sia. He's improving fast. I can feel it."

Sia shrugged. "So what? You're improving too. Look, you've always been good, Arjun. But lately, it's like you're on a whole new level. Whatever you're doing, keep it up. Kabir doesn't stand a chance."

Her words were meant to reassure him, but they only made the weight of his secret heavier. He wanted to tell her—everything about the system, the missions, the enhancements. But how could he explain something so unbelievable?

Instead, he just nodded. "Yeah, maybe you're right."

### The Tournament

Three days later, Arjun stood in the lobby of the tournament venue, clutching his racket and trying to calm his nerves. The place was packed with players from all over the region, each of them preparing for their matches. The air buzzed with tension and excitement.

His heart raced as he scanned the crowd, looking for Kabir. And then, he saw him—standing near the registration desk, surrounded by a group of other top-ranked players. Kabir's eyes locked onto Arjun's, and for a moment, neither of them moved.

Finally, Kabir smirked and made his way over. "Arjun. You ready for this? I've been waiting for our rematch."

Arjun forced a smile. "Yeah, I'm ready."

Kabir's eyes gleamed with a mix of determination and something darker. "Good. Because this time, I'm not holding back."

Before Arjun could respond, a voice called out over the loudspeaker. "Next match: Arjun Mehra vs. Kabir Malik. Court 3."

The time had come.

### The Rematch Begins

As they stepped onto the court, the tension was electric. Spectators gathered around, eager to witness the rematch between the two rising stars. Arjun could feel his heart pounding in his chest, but he forced himself to stay focused.

Phantom's voice whispered in his mind. "Stay calm. Use your reflexes and speed together. Kabir has been training, but you have the system on your side."

The referee blew the whistle, and the game began.

Kabir wasted no time, launching into an aggressive attack. His smashes were faster and more powerful than before, and Arjun struggled to keep up in the opening rallies. Kabir was different—sharper, more dangerous. It was as if he had undergone a transformation.

Arjun's muscles screamed in protest as he pushed himself to match Kabir's pace. His reflexes kicked in, allowing him to return Kabir's shots, but it wasn't enough. Kabir was relentless, his attacks precise and unyielding.

The first game ended with Kabir taking a commanding lead.

Arjun bent over, panting, his racket shaking in his hand. He glanced at the scoreboard—1-0 to Kabir. The crowd murmured in surprise. No one had expected Kabir to dominate so completely.

Phantom's voice was calm, but firm. "You're holding back. Stop relying solely on speed and reflexes. Think. Use your mind to outplay him."

Arjun closed his eyes for a moment, letting Phantom's words sink in. He couldn't just rely on the system's powers—he needed strategy. Kabir was stronger, but strength alone wasn't enough to win.

### The Second Game

The second game began, and Arjun changed his approach. Instead of meeting Kabir's power head-on, he focused on control. He placed his shots with precision, forcing Kabir to chase the shuttle around the court. Kabir's aggressive playstyle left him open to mistakes, and Arjun exploited every weakness he could find.

Slowly but surely, Arjun clawed his way back into the game. His reflexes kicked in at crucial moments, allowing him to make impossible returns. His speed allowed him to reach shots that seemed unreachable. And his mind, sharp and focused, guided him through every rally.

The crowd grew louder as the match became more intense, each point harder fought than the last.

Finally, after a grueling rally, Arjun smashed the shuttle into the far corner of the court. Kabir dove for it, but missed by inches.

The score was tied—1-1.

### The Final Game

The final game was a battle of wills. Both players were exhausted, their bodies pushed to the brink. Sweat poured down their faces as they exchanged fierce volleys, neither willing to back down.

Kabir's eyes burned with determination, but Arjun could see the strain in his movements. He was slowing down. Arjun, too, felt the fatigue creeping in, but Phantom's voice urged him on.

"You are stronger than this. Focus. One more push."

With everything on the line, Arjun dug deep. His reflexes kicked in one last time, and he made a daring return, sending the shuttle flying toward the back of the court. Kabir lunged, but his exhausted legs couldn't carry him fast enough.

The shuttle hit the ground.

Point to Arjun.

The match was over.

The crowd erupted into cheers, but Arjun barely heard them. He stood in the middle of the court, panting heavily, his mind racing. He had won—but at what cost?

Kabir walked over, breathing hard. He gave Arjun a long, hard look before nodding. "You're good. Really good."

Arjun nodded back, still catching his breath. "You too."

But as Kabir walked away, Arjun couldn't shake the feeling that something had changed—both in Kabir and in himself. The system had pushed him to victory, but how much longer could he rely on it before it demanded more from him? And what was Kabir hiding?

The tournament was over, but Arjun's journey had only just begun.
