The dust had barely settled when a voice cut through the air.
"Don't move, bloodsucker," Xavier stood there, a high-powered rifle pointed squarely at her back. Behind him, two of his squad fanned out with their weapons trained on the girl. "Drop the sword. Drop it NOW!"
The vampire girl's muscles tensed. She turned her head slightly, eyeing the new threat from her peripheral vision.
"Took you long enough!" Martinez shouted from the ruins of his mech. "Where the hell have you been?"
Xavier's lips curled into a sneer. "O'Brien littered the whole damn house with enchantment mines. We had to sweep every inch before we could get out."
Kazuo glanced back at the unconscious Siobhán. He didn't think she would plant the entire house of enchantment mines. She was really making sure that he was safe.
But why? Why go to such lengths?
As he thought about the weight of her sacrifice, he couldn't help but wonder about his own worth.
