Chapter 42 - A totally not petty response

Jessica could immediately see that his mood had gone from bad to worse. She remained silent for a few moments before continuing, "Do you have any other instructions for me, sir? Do you want me to dig into him more?" She could already tell the answer would be yes, and she wasn't looking forward to it. Digging up dirt on a lawyer who can and will sue the pants off them was not exactly her idea of fun. Nor was dealing with an enraged, possessive CEO with a massive emotional range.

"Dig into everything. Everything you can find—from his goddamn social media to his medical history. Make it as thorough as possible; money is not an issue. And yes, this includes the 'not legal' ways of obtaining information. I want to know everything," he said, his tone almost a growl. He didn't give a damn about the legal ramifications or the possible lawsuits they might face. This was about Elias, and he'd do anything.

He continued reading the page before him again, finally releasing a tense breath. He dismissed her, letting his back slam against the wall as he slid down, sitting on the floor. He was taking ragged breaths, sweat running down his brow.

"As you wish, sir," she said, her voice still neutral and steady. She didn't know what was going on, and she preferred not to. Getting involved in her boss's personal drama was the last thing she wanted. Jessica picked up the files, gave a slight nod, and was about to walk out of the court when she remembered something.

"There's…um, a note from Senator Sterling, for you. It was delivered late yesterday, and it has a single line: 'Trying to ignite old flames with melted candles won't achieve anything, Williams. So quit before I get involved.'" She read out, trying to keep her face neutral.

Louis didn't need clarification, the senator was clearly referring to him reconnecting with Elias. Damn that old bastard. Technically, they were the same age, but screw it; Louis wore it better.

Unaware of his thoughts, she continued, "Do you want to send a reply, sir?"

Louis gritted his teeth upon hearing that. Daniel was really starting to test his patience. He knew that bastard well enough; they went to high school together. He finally replied, his voice slightly less irritated but still clearly pissed as he laughed bitterly, "Ah, so Mr. 'I'm-afraid-to-show-my-face-because-I'm-a-coward' has finally decided to grow a pair again. Hmm, send this back: 'Don't you have better things to do than worry about who I decide to rekindle old flames with? Pay off your own debts before trying to give me sermons, bastard. At least I'm not a coward who hides behind sending flowers without a name.'"

He was about to dismiss her when he added, "Wait. Add this too: 'I'll be voting for the left wing, and I hope you lose, you bastard.' And make sure to add a 'fuck you' at the end. Oh, also- write it in that fancy cursive he's so fond of."

Jessica, with years of experience, somehow managed to keep her expression neutral as she heard that, only letting out an internal sigh. Great. Now her boss had decided to start a petty argument with a goddamn senator. Fan-fucking-tastic.

"Right away, sir," she said, giving another quick nod before making her exit, her heels clacking on the wooden floor.

...How hard it is to be a secretary these days. This was so not in her job description.
